Yeah, that match was really the AJ Styles show. I saw about 15-16 minutes of it and aside from the McMahon involvement it was a very good storyline match. Love AJ's fucking spots so much, he is just so god damned good. I've accepted that Reigns is going to get force fed and there's not much that can be done, Vince is only creative when his back is against the wall, so we're stuck with this. But AJ Styles getting a couple of main events to carry Reigns sounds good to me.

Biggest problem is usually the WWE champ ends up being someone who can both carry the company and matches but Reigns can't do either right now. They rushed his star development and its been showing for a while.

Ol Dirty Dastard

Also, the WWE's seems really stymied in how to book a modern day baby face. What I DID like about Roman tonight was he sold for AJ, even after the match. He didn't just forget about his knee, and a lot of the stuff he did looked good.

But, you take all the possible equity he could have earned and you sort of throw it away with the OVERCOME THE ODDS finish. You know what would make him infinitely more interesting even as a baby face? If he cheated to win because AJ was pushing him to the limits (it was no holds barred so that would even make more sense because he wouldn't have broken any rules). Like if he pulled the tights, or jabbed AJ in the knee with a chair and rolled him up in a small package, and explained that he was desperate because AJ is a badass and Roman needs to keep being "THE GUY" (for fuck sake)

I would surmise that the vocal haters could relate to that a bit more then BAH GAWD AFTER A HELL OF A MATCH ROMAN COMES BACK AND WINS WITH THE EXACT SAME MOVE HE ALWAYS COMES BACK AND WINS WITH HE IS THE GUY (NOT A GOOD GUY AND NOT A BAD GUY FYI)

Maluco
05-02-2016, 12:21 AM
Usos as back up aren't going to help Reigns either. I appreciate that they can go, but they lack personality just as much as "The Guy" does.

What Would Kevin Do?
05-02-2016, 12:21 AM
Let's give WWE some credit here... They treated AJ way better in that match then I expected.

He has only been in the company since January, he lost clean to Jericho at Mania and had to reboot his momentum the night after, yet he had a toe to toe match with Roman tonight. People are throwing a fit about how many finishers Roman took, and Styles going down to one spear, but come on. Roman is the fucking poster boy. It was a great match, and if they are willing to keep Roman a "tweener" in the sense that he doesn't give a shit about the crowd, I'm okay with him being overpowered.

Cena was obnoxious because he was an overpowered baby face who would always overcome the odds. A heel or a tweener can be overpowered.

I agree but it's kind of sad though. Most guys like Styles would have had to have been jobbed out to almost everyone before being given half a chance.

Only 2 bad things about that match were the McMahons deciding that they are the main event and them not letting Roman show any character development in the finish. Other than that, (and honestly being desensitized to this product those 2 things aren't as huge a deterrent as they should be) it was well worked and AJ got some nice shine throughout.

I thought AJ vs Roman was a good match. Roman looked a little weak in the beginning when AJ actually decided to try to put on a wrestling match...and the commentators completely, COMPLETELY missed the story/point of the match.

AJ was getting to the champion. AJ was exploiting the champion's weaknesses. AJ was hurting "The Guy." Reigns was visibly selling his frustration the entire match, and the commentators completely ignored it. AJ had the champion dead to rights, won the match twice technically, and not one mention. Reigns was selling as though he was going to snap out of frustration...not one mention. Also no one has mentioned the the phenomenal forearm is one-upsmanship of the superman punch

Cole then completely turned on AJ, as if Styles were the heel, when Anderson and Gallows came out, and again, failed to pick up on the story point that AJ never saw them, and that maybe he wouldn't want to win like that.

Great match completely destroyed by the commentators, and the count out/DQ nonsense. I was thinking it might work until I realized it was just a vehicle to advance the Shane vs. Stephanie storyline, and maybe set up a feud with the Usos/Roman and the Bullet Club.

I can't see any point, if they continue he feud past the next pay per view, that AJ won't lose next time. There's still a lot of time to kill, and AJ holding the title for a month, or longer as they push forward with the Bullet Club-like stable.

Dunno, typical WWE clusterfuck.

Definitely good points about the inept commentary completely failing to tell a story. Solid show. Didn't catch the pre show or tag match but I guess Enzo got hurt. Sucks as I thought him and Cass were the only good call ups. Guess there is going to be a 4 way for the IC title and I like that. Ambrose/Jericho was alright. The main event was a good match. Typical Roman match though, AJ put on a show and Roman comes back to win with a spear. AJ still comes out looking strong with the 2 wins and might be pushed to accept Anderson and Gallows help.

Overall I really liked the show.

* Dolph vs. Corbin really didn't need to be on the PPV. Giving Corbin the red lights make me think the company just want of us to think of him as the new Kane. Gives him a "New Era Monster" kind of feeling. Dolph winning is fine, because he's a face and he needs to be able to pull rabbits out of hats, and it exploited the weaknesses of the Corbin character -- his inexperience and arrogance. I wouldn't mind seeing them thrown into the IC Title program and them make it an Elimination Chamber at Extreme Rules or something.

* Kalisto vs. Ryback was actually really good. One of the best Ryback matches I've seen, and he worked really hard to stand out. He still looks like he's trying to be good though, which is awkward and weird. I'm curious to see where Kalisto goes next, because it could really be anywhere. Another US Title run for Rusev? Or do they just skip right ahead to Corbin?

* Poor Enzo. That spot looked like it fucking sucked. I'm glad the dude's okay, and in a weird sort of way, there could be a silver lining here. Enzo's more lovable now and has a comeback story. The Vaudevillains should be made #1 Contenders by default and brag about what they did to Enzo. Have them beat The New Day, since ND can go beyond the belts now, and Enzo & Cass can return and confront them in New Jersey.

* Kevin Owens was a star tonight. Great stuff all around from him. He reminded me of Rock circa 98 here. He's almost too good for the IC Title right now, so I was disappointed to see him declare his intent for it. Sami Zayn attacking him during commentary would have been a great way to keep that program spinning, and I could have just imagined the pop if Cesaro had won the title on top of that. Oh well, the story here is something and I can understand them wanting to keep it on The Miz for a bit longer. Fatal 4-Way at Extreme Rules probably -- Cesaro works best when he has lots of people to uppercut, but I imagine either Owens or Zayn walking away with the belt.

* Ambrose vs. Jericho was fine. I really liked the finish. Got no clue where they go with Jericho now. He probably keeps going with Ambrose but I feel that's sort of wheel-spinning at this point. Actually, Kalisto vs. Jericho would be quite good.

* I didn't expect the Montreal Screwjob finish. A good way to protect Natalya and keep the belt on Charlotte. I was ready for a clean win, but Nattie's chase has been surprisingly good and I'm sure it's good for morale. They needed an angle to keep her going -- this sort of schmozz will draw the average fan into what they're doing. I wish we got more Becky and Sasha in the meantime though.

* The crowd really didn't give a shit about the Shane/Stephanie outcome, did they? Everyone played their parts well enough here. This was fine.

* AJ Styles belongs in the main event. He was phenomenal here. That forearm to Reigns from the barricade was fucking sick. By the end of the match, I was really invested in Styles winning, which is a good sign for the story they told here. The technical wins for Styles helped him out more than they hurt, I feel. Reigns is going to get so much better working with Styles. Still shouldn't be "The Guy," but whatever. There are few people that can drag this shit out with Reigns.

Mr. Nerfect
05-02-2016, 06:18 AM
The show felt long enough, but I really wish they could have gotten Becky vs. Emma on there. It wouldn't have changed the world or anything, but it would have been a nice solid win for a babyface lady on the roster with some semblance of story behind it.

Ryback is very entertaining. Not sure why he isn't in a better position.

Hated this PPV. Hated the writing. HATED the commentary (cept Owens). Hated most of the match finishes. Best match goes to Kalisto and Ryback which I had zero fucks to give before it started...that throw from the top was fucking awesome. Zayne/Owens was awesome as well...the rest just screamed of too many hands in the writing cookie jar.

This really completely blew away WM 32, IMHO.

Also, his belt said something like "The Pre-Show Stopper".

Ok, so, no Gallows, Anderson, or Balor last night, right?

This all gonna go down tonight on Raw? I know the ratings haven't been all that good. But tonight feels like this is all gonna come together somewhat.

I think I did pretty good in tipsters...even called Miz/Cesaro roll up. Only missed on Corbin and Zayn/Owens

Pretty solid show. Not incredible but a solid outing. A couple of matches under-delivered but the first hour or so--barring Enzo's scary as fuck near death--was a pretty incredible continuous story. I really wish they'd have more segments run into each other like that.

Main event was fun if a bit of a cluster. Looking forward to the rematch. Lots of amazing near falls. I bit on a couple and actually thought they might pull the trigger on a title change.

Match of the night goes to Ryback stealing Punk's entrance.

Doubtful for tonight since it's AJ V Reigns at Extreme Rules. Maybe Balor gets called up and they tease something, but I really doubt it'll all play out tonight.

Great photo made even better by the fact that WWE edited out "it bores" off the bottom of the yellow sign on the right.

As much as I hate WWE for it's monumental botch of Ryback's original face run, he could be a great upper-midcard dickhead heel.

It's just... he should have been so much more.

I think this was a pretty good card. I agree with it being BS that RR kicks out of multiple finishes. What bugged me the most about this ppv is the commentary. All 3 suck ass. Cole is fake, JBL is a dummy and Byron is useless. JBL pretty much no sold everything byron said and I thought that was funny. I just feel the commentating misses too much and itself is too scripted. They dont help in building talent other than jizzing all over the golden boys.

I've said this plenty but Cole and JBL were gold together on SmackDown in 2006-07. It was clear that Vince didn't oversee everything coming out of the announcers mouths back then. They'd argue a lot but never to the point where it would be a distraction to the show.

Cole at this point just doesn't sound truly excited about anything. And I can't really blame him. He is micromanaged to shit.

The commentators could do so much better if Vince let them actually call matches. There's no excuse to not be using Mauro Ranallo for PPV now. Mauro and JBL would be fine out there. Give PPVs a different aesthetic feel. Cole and Byron can call the pre-show stuff and Cole can take over Vince's role when it comes to commentary.

Wade Keller and Steve Austin had the same feelings about Reigns and Styles that I did, which was some nice validation.

Interesting to see so many different opinions. Keller himself gave it 4 stars, Austin gave it 5, and the guy covering the ppv gave it 2 and 3 quarters on pwtorch. Just goes to show you how stupid star ratings for matches are.

I don't get not liking the match to be honest. It'd be one thing if it was sloppy or didn't have any heat, but A) Roman didn't superman sell, he narrowly escaped with his foot on the rope and b) For one second I thought Styles had him with the 450 splash.

I will defend this match to the death, based on Styles' performance on its own. I found it incredibly exciting. I'm going to go all CyNick here and say some of y'all are far too jaded and could do with a bit of a break from watching if you couldn't enjoy that match based on the bell to bell alone.

It was enjoyable, but I feel like Styles made it so.

I was with you on the 450 spot. There were a couple spots I thought things might change hands, but alas it was the same in the end.

I have stopped watching weekly and stream a PPV match if it sounds interesting. It has made things a bit better, but still not wanting to watch weekly.

I feel like they are putting together the shows with the idea that people aren't watching the whole thing. The idea that people will watch a 3 hour tv show in its entirety week to week is utterly insane. It's different if it's a sporting event, but they go to great lengths to tell you that it's not a sport, but in fact entertainment.
