I was thinking about how bad Smackdown! has been recently, and I was thinking about some of the worst challengers for a World Title.
So anways, I thought I would pose this question to you guys: Who were the worst World title challengers ever. By 'bad' I mean a guy who was a bad wrestler and who wasn't over at all.
The Butcher from Starcade 94
Mabel from SummerSlam 95
Barbarian from Halloween Havoc 92
Hardcore Holly from Royal Rumble '04
Add on.

I still can't believe Mabel won KOTR that year - a decade later! Even as a twelve-year-old mark I didn't take him seriously as a "threat" to Diesel's title.
Throw Bradshaw, Vince McMahon, David Arquette and Vince Russo on that list.
- Bradshaw
- Holly
If people who challanged and WON count...
- Mr. McMahon
- David Arquette :nono:

It wasn't like there wasn't anyone else, either - both Taker or HBK could've won it (as they were WAY over) and it would've been great.

Scott Steiner, Maven
Steiner deserved his chance and Maven was only a TV shot. If it was just free TV shots then the list would be endless.

I think im gonna go with:
Holly
Mabel
Bradshaw
on this one. Basically for the fact that they have been named and I cant really think of any other ones right now.

Jeff Hardy (2002, I believe ladder match vs. Taker)
You'd be right. One of the last good matches Jeff ever put on. But hey, that wasn't a bad world title challenge. It was a bad story. The match itself, excellent.
Steiner could've been such a great threat to the World Heavyweight Title.
Bad booking can screw anyone over.
Oh wait I forgot...he sucks.
I thought about putting Jeff, but it was, IMO, up in the air... For one, Jeff didnt exactly deserve the title... (I know he's been around for so long and is a fair wrestler, but at that time, he really wasnt main event/world title material) On the other hand, the match was pretty decent, so it really saved it...
Just incase it comes up, Bradshaw may have put on ONE good match thus far, but the storyline isnt over, so I really dont know how it will come out... Still, at the moment, he doesnt deserve the title shots hes getting...
Nah Jeff deserved the shot and we should only talk about people who challenged on PPV. Ric Flair defended the World title against EVERYONE

I'm not saying that the match was bad. I'm saying that putting Jeff Hardy near the Undisputed championship was far from good booking. It's ok, I think the match was originally made to give Taker more heat. At the end of the match, he raised Jeff's hand and lost all the heat anyway...

Barry Windham, GAB '91.
If you don't know the story, Flair/Luger had been feuding for well over a year, Flair ducking Luger every chance possible. Tonight was the night he was set to drop it, and everybody knew it was happening, but that didn't matter, 'cause it was going to be awesome.
Except WCW wanted Flair to take less money in his next contract. Flair outright refused, WCW fired him, and didn't even bother to take the title back.
As a result, Barry Windham, who'd done nothing but tag matches forever, become the #2 contender for some unknown reason and lost to Lex. Fans were chanting "WE WANT FLAR!" all goddamn night.
The Big Show at Survivor Series 00 (I think)
I was jacked to see Stone Cold vs. Triple H vs. The Rock for the first time ever. The three biggest superstars of the time going one on one on one. Then, Austin got hit by a hummer, and a replacement was needed for the triple threat main event.
Enter Big Show. And bah gawd, the big son of a bitch won it.

I think that match was supposed to mark the begining of a face turn for 'Taker anyways. Still, it was rather exciting match. At least, from my perspective.

Bob Backlund.
The year he defeated Bret Hart for the title and then lost his title three days later in a three second match against Diesel.

Don't be so stupid. Backlund was a former world champion who had a storyline reason and was a credible wrestler who was a big headliner.
This thread has gone to sh</>it anyway.

I think that is because they were going to turn him face again anyways

That's probably true, Taker heel didn't work anyway. Same reason it didn't work for Austin.

David Arquette doesn't exist for the purpose of this reply (if he even counts, he is the undisputed champion of worst World Title Challengers). Ditto for Vince Russo and Vince McMahon (at least that title was declared vacant ASAP).
but as said before:
Bossman '99. As someone else said, if The Bossman was gonna get a title shot, it should have been 10 years ago...in 1999, this would have been like giving Henry O. Godwinn a shot at the title or something...then again, he was the only person with whom the babyface Big Show could feud with at the time...everyone else was either new faces, or mired in other feuds. This was one of the biggest problems with The Big Show's title reign. Now that I think of it, The Big Show never really had a decent WWE title reign. In WCW, as the Giant, he was pushed like a certain other giant 90% of the time...so when he held the title, it was somewhat more believable and palatable.
by that mark, add Big Show '99 to that list. He got almost a Lesnarian push to the belt out of nowhere that year...he had no build up from WWE booking whatsoever, not even thinking of playing on his WCW reputation (there were legal issues, I know, but still...when you start from a clean slate)...he was moderately developed but not far enough to justify the shot.
Hardcore Holly, '04. No explanation needed. I would have believed a Billy Gunn shot in '99 after KOTR before this.
Scott Steiner '03. Bad booking, and not-so-hot ring work, plus a WWE-restricted moveset kept the fun out of what should have been long-awaited feud.
Hulk Hogan '02. I'm surprised I haven't seen this one yet. HHH, when he was on top of the company after the quad injury, had some of THE worst feuds and booking ever in that year. The whole HHH-Hogan match was a complete joke....painful to watch.
Stephanie McMahon '02. While we're on the subject of bad HHH booking...
Bradshaw '04. The only thing that puts him above Hardcore Holly, is that Bradshaw got a gimmick do-over with some buildup before the title shot was given. Hardcore Holly has been virtually the same guy since '98 or so....and kept the same position in the pecking order as well.

Dude...I never said that I aggreed with the body painting. Hell, I often joked that he was drinking his own body paint to make the decisions he did. But he was a pretty solid worker IMO. Just stop being an ass about some people's choices over who's their fav wrestler is. Its like me hating you because you breath oxygen. Its stupid really.

By the way you seem to have taken offence to my post however, I am led to believe that you are somehow involved with this 'army'. You felt the need to defend your view and belief even though at no point had it been challenged.
Indeed you are entitled to form your own opinion, but in this instance, your opinion would lead to many people having more desire to strike up conversation with a very Angry, Hungry, Territorial Grizzly Bear on heat just after you'd stepped onto his 'patch'.
Your rep status is correct my friend you really do 'need to get your shit together'.

Well, you don't have to worry much. I'm actually quite a smart person to tell you the truth. I'm just passionete. Like all Greeks. That and I like Jeff Hardy to a stalking degree. Smart my arse. you have a loose grip on the English language (maybe because you are Greek I'll admit that much) and you can hardly string two valid sentences together, so rather than wasting my time and yours with this petty bickering, I'm going to act my age and go to work.

I got to go with Hardbore Holly
That was one of the worst, lamest matches I've seen in a long time.
As soon as Brock got in the ring I wanted the match to end.
That was about as much fun as sticking needles in my eyes, shoving car exhaust pipes up my nostrils, having gangrene in my nether regions, and listening to Celine Dion warbling the theme to Titanic at 800Db.

Worst challengers for a world title
Scott Steiner - The less said about those matches at the Royal Rumble and Now Way Out, the better.
Big Bossman - God awful feud. At least the match itself only lasted like two minutes.
Bradshaw - Now th ematch at Judgement Day was good but I think most of us know that was because of Eddie. Not deserving of a main event push.
Hardcore Holly - I didn't see that match and I quite frankly look at myself as a lucky person because of that.
