Brock Lesnar close to finalizing deal to fight at UFC 200

The UFC is in serious talks with former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar to have him fight at UFC 200 on July 9 in Las Vegas, multiple sources confirmed with MMA Fighting. Both sides are close to finalizing a deal, and if all goes well, Lesnar's return to mixed martial arts could be announced imminently.

While talks are progressing well between Lesnar and the UFC, an opponent for Lesnar isn't close to being finalized. It is unclear at this time who is under consideration. The 38-year-old Lesnar hasn't competed in MMA since his Dec. 2011 loss to Alistair Overeem at UFC 141. Lesnar's career was cut short due to his struggles with diverticulitis, and after leaving MMA, he returned to World Wrestling Entertainment, where he's been performing for the last four years.

Lesnar, considered one of the greatest draws in MMA history, left the UFC with a 5-3 professional record. He won the UFC heavyweight title in Nov. 2008 when he defeated Randy Couture via second-round TKO. Though, many would argue his crowning achievement was his performance as a headliner at UFC 100 in July 2009. On that night in Las Vegas, Lesnar avenged his loss to Frank Mir in what still stands as the best-selling pay-per-view in MMA history.

I bet WWE agreed to this in return for a Ronda Rousey match at WM next year.

Probably going to be wasted on something Triple H and/or Steph related since that was the rumored plans for this year's Mania before other stuff caused it to get changed.

Wouldn't be surprised if WWE had Lesnar lose his first match back from UFC like last time just to have a laugh at them again.

When I first read this on my phone, I thought WWE had him locked up for a while.

But since Vince approved, WWE gotta be getting something out of this? Rousey coming for a match in exchange makes sense. Maybe stick it to CM Punk and make sure he never sees the octagon?

One can only wonder.

Charlotte holding on to the title all the way to WrestleMania and Rousey coming in to face her at WrestleMania would be an awesome spectacle. Or even better, Asuka coming to the main roster to dominate for months before facing her. But then again, I don't know if there's a good way to end either match. Especially if it's just a one-off for Rousey.

Freedom of the press means the government is not permitted to retaliate against individuals for reporting news. It doesn't guarantee media members access to things they want to report.

That match was booked perfectly and Cena should have won, by the way. They made the smarkiest of crowds in Chicago turn and side with Cena. They were going nuts for him by the end of it. And Lesnar's rampage could have started after the match just fine. They followed it up with some boneheaded moves but that night they did everything right.

Which happens first, Bobby Lashley as TNA and Bellator champ or Brock with the WWE and UFC straps? Lashley has been doing well in Bellator and if he wins at Slammiversary he'd be TNA champ and would only be waiting on Bellator to give him a title shot. If Brock wins this fight I can see him challenging for the WWE title at Summerslam.

I was hoping Brock would take the WWE World Title at SummerSlam, and if he wins his fight, I assume that has a very good chance of happening. This is good business for both the WWE and UFC though. I imagine the WWE will get access to Ronda Rousey now. Charlotte vs. Rousey at WrestleMania would be pretty hot.

That would actually be a decent SummerSlam match. Seems like a good spot for Brock if he loses too. Rusev could drop the US Title to Cena who can then defend it against Styles at SummerSlam. You could get something looking like this:

Triple Threat Match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship
Roman Reigns (c) vs. Seth Rollins vs. Dean Ambrose

Brock Lesnar vs. Rusev

Triple H vs. Bray Wyatt

United States Championship
John Cena (c) vs. AJ Styles

Women's Championship
Charlotte (c) vs. Sasha Banks

Special announcement to be made by:
The Rock (turns out to be Ronda Rousey competing at WrestleMania 33)

Fatal 4-Way Tag Team Match for the WWE Tag Team Championship
Gallows & Anderson (c) vs. The New Day vs. The Usos vs. Enzo & Cass

Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn

Intercontinental Championship
Cesaro (c) vs. Chris Jericho

From a wrestling perspective, this is perfect for the WWE assuming Lesnar doesn't get seriously hurt and faces Reigns at Summerslam.

If he beats Hunt, Heyman could boast about Lesnar wanting to take out another Samoan except this time to get back his belt while Reigns would try to topple the beast for some family or Samoan honor reason.

If he loses to Hunt, Reigns could tease Lesnar with Samoan related jokes leading to Lesnar going on a rampage till he gets both a title shot and a chance at possible revenge.

WWE's part of the deal could hit a snag depending on post-fight tests from New York's Commission since Summerslam is in the state this year.

The state of New York does oversee professional wrestling and in speaking with a member of the New York State Athletic Commission, Lesnar will have to be cleared by the commission in order to work SummerSlam after his UFC 200 bout.

Laz Benitez of the New York State Athletic Commission provided the following statement to The LAW regarding the procedures that Lesnar will have to go through for clearance at SummerSlam:

Potential participation by Mr. Lesnar in an August WWE event would depend on his medical fitness and physical condition at the time of the professional wrestling show. No person is allowed to participate in a professional wrestling exhibition in New York State until he or she is cleared as medically fit to do so by a New York State licensed physician.

They'd still have UFC to help promote the ppv but could be missing out on Lesnar's possible mainstream drawing power if he's out.

So, why would WWE agree to Lesnar’s UFC return? If Lesnar is to be believed, WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon didn’t have much of a choice.

Lesnar, 38, described his recent meeting with McMahon during a Monday interview on ESPN’s “SportsCenter.”

“I said, ‘Listen, old man, we can do this the hard way or the easy way,’” Lesnar chuckled. “I said, ‘Do you wanna arm-wrestle for it?’ and he’s like, ‘Yeah, what the hell.’ So, I ended up beating him, and here we are.”

According to Lesnar -- whose WWE ring attire includes MMA-style gloves and board shorts -- recording another bout under the UFC banner will prove beneficial to all parties involved.

He will then move on to Cena and eventually (after 1 or 2 ppvs) lose the belt to Cena.

Being rumored another reason the WWE had no issue letting Lesnar do a UFC fight was them paying back UFC for being allowed to use Ronda Rousey at Mania 31.

Another report, however, stated letting Lesnar take the Mark Hunt fight was WWE returning the favor to UFC for Ronda Rousey's WrestleMania 31 appearance.

The more I think about this, the more I think the WWE has to lose. I've thought about the damage control the WWE could do and I've heard the justifications for how Brock can lose and still keep dignity. At the end of the day though, it all means that "The Baddest Guy on the Planet" in WWE lost in a real fight.

I was just coming here to say the same thing. The more I think about this, the more I feel like this is a horrific idea on WWE's part.

I mean... the mystique he built from ending the streak and squashing Cena for the title has already kinda been squandered for nothing but getting destroyed in a real fight is the best way to snuff it out completely. Not worth it at all.

#BROKEN Hasney

I don't think there's anything to lose. Will people really question his acted role if he loses in a real fight? To me it would be like not buying The Rock as a tough guy in any of his films if he lost a fight. I don't link the two at all.

If Brock gets injured, sure, they could lose that. But then he came back to WWE after a few losses, lost to Cena straight away and still looked like a beast.

Brock returned to WWE after getting his ass kicked two fights in a row. I think it depends on how he loses. If he gets KO'd in 30 seconds or turtles up like his last 2 fights, it won't be good. Easiest damage control is to come back and beat the shit out of Roman Reigns. Everybody cheers Brock and forgets he got knocked the fuck out.

I get what you're saying, but I think Brock is one of the few guys who gives off that "real" cred, the stuff that makes people suspend their disbelief as goofy shit makes them tune out. Him having an "acted role" would be exactly the problem if the WWE tried to push him as a top star after an embarrassing loss.

Can you imagine kids at school saying "Whoa! Did you see Brock Lesnar beat Roman Reigns at SummerSlam?" without some other kid saying "Pfft. Brock Lesnar's a pussy. Mark Hunt killed him in 30 seconds."

I think he's smart enough to use the leverage from the win to segue into more money from Vince. I imagine that if he beats Hunt, he'll be getting a/the World Title. Vince and Brock will be best buds for a while. When it comes time to re-negotiate that contract? That's when things might get shitty. But Brock's honestly probably better off just going out with a win and leaving on that high note and using that mystique to his advantage. If he isn't happy with WWE, I'm sure New Japan would gladly pay him as he works dates.

#1-norm-fan
06-09-2016, 07:23 PM
Yeah, most of Brock's aura comes from him being a legit badass. The Rock analogy doesn't work because The Rock in a movie is completely playing a character. Brock's "character" is pretty much him. His real life credibility is tied directly to his character in WWE. If he gets his ass kicked that kinda hurts the gimmick.

Mr. Nerfect
06-09-2016, 07:25 PM
I think no matter what happens Brock should come back and kick the shit out of roman reigns.

Fair point, and it will get Brock cheered, but what does it do for Reigns? What does it do for The Undertaker? Mark Hunt > Brock Lesnar > The Undertaker if Hunt smashes Brock. There are ways to lose and get around it. Look at the impact Kimbo Slice had on fighting without a perfect record. But Brock's whole mystique comes from him being this unstoppable force of nature. If you can stop him, the mystique is gone.

My ideal booking for SummerSlam, prior to all this draft stuff, was Brock beating Reigns at the show anyway. Brock's a big attraction, they have issues yet to be resolved and Brooklyn will be rabid looking for the head of Reigns. Maybe he puts up more of a fight than Cena did at SummerSlam two years ago, but Brock eventually wins the belt.

You could still be building up Seth Rollins (I'd have had him beat Triple H at SummerSlam), but you'd also have John Cena back and arguably the best he's ever been as an overall performer. You could have Dean Ambrose with the Money in the Bank briefcase and Reigns looking for redemption. The Royal Rumble would be a very interesting PPV, where my favorite scenario is for Cena to win, challenge Brock at Mania, put his career on the line while The Shield fight in a Triple Threat with the MITB briefcase on the line. Reigns wins that, Cena beats Brock, Joe beats Orton or something, Joe challenges Cena at Payback, Cena barely retains, Reigns cashes in on Joe's damage, wins the title and has issues with basically everybody and is now a top heel.

With the draft and the Brock fight, a lot of this gets thrown into chaos. Right now, I'm actually wondering if the best idea is to go with Brock vs. Rusev, regardless of the outcome, because Rusev isn't yet that important to the company, but facing Brock is still somewhat of a promotion for him. He can lose, get something, but ultimately Brock redeems himself or continues building his momentum. I guess Sheamus could fill this role too, but I'm a lot less excited for that match for some reason. It's possible Del Rio could be presented as legit in order to get Brock something back too.

Ideally, Brock wins, talks shit about Samoans and then Joe comes out to confront him and Heyman talks Brock into walking off and not wanting a piece of Joe. Run Big Show vs. Samoa Joe at SummerSlam (or something like that), and have Joe win, but Brock attacks him after the match.

Lesnar is still getting the usual pre-fight test but won't be subjected to extra testing rules in place for former MMA fighters who un-retire nor all the testing rules for fighters in general.
