MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis wrestling legend Jerry “The King” Lawler and his fiance’e, Lauryn McBride are facing domestic assault charges.

The 66-year-old Lawler and the 27-year-old McBride were both booked into the Shelby County Jail around 1 a.m. Friday.

According to the affidavit, the two were involved in a violent confrontation at Lawler’s home on St. Nick Dr. in East Memphis.

McBride claims Lawler struck her in the head and pushed her against a stove while Lawler claims McBride scratched him in the face, threw a candle at him and kicked him in the groin.

McBride also alleged that Lawler got an unloaded pistol, put it on the kitchen counter and told her to kill herself.

Lawler says McBride was intoxicated and claims McBride is the one who brought the pistol into the kitchen.

Lawler has been a public figure in the Memphis area for more than 40 years.

His wrestling career has spanned decades and he even ran for Memphis mayor a few times.

He currently owns a restaurant on Beale St.

Lawler was previously arrested in 1999 for throwing a ticket at a Memphis police officer and running over his foot.

I grew up with Lawler objectifying women in every single match they were a part of, and I just figured "old pervert" was simply his gimmick. Then eventually I learned about his history. And even in his book he very openly talks about how much he would like to sleep with Trish, Stacy, and others who were around at the time.

Like...I get it. Every women's segment back then was based on their looks and sex appeal so his sentiments were probably shared by a large portion of the straight male audience. But it still just struck me as incredibly creepy that he openly wrote about which of his co-workers he wanted to have sex with in is own biography. Especially given that he was old enough to be their fathers and in light of what happened with The Kat.

This is a sad story. For the sake of King, I hope his account is accurate. It might be time for King to move on to other things anyway. SmackDown could use a fresh voice. I just hope King doesn't leave with a completely ruined reputation and can still host Hall of Fames or whatever. But if he did beat up his girlfriend, I can't feel too sorry for him. He comes from a different age, but he's spent a lot of time in the public light crafting a persona and being around lots of young people. He's had a good opportunity to "mature" with the times.

I wouldn't mind them beginning to phase him out. I'd give him a position as a "Pay Per view Host" for Smackdown and let him drift into retirement. Dropping him at this point though would seem like punishment for something where he wasn't at fault.

Let him and Mauro call Smackers and maybe keep Mauro and King call Main Event or whatever they tape before SmackDown. Maybe give King his own talk show or interview segment when they expand SmackDown to three hours, because short-term. He can still host the Hall of Fame and be a talking head.
