I watched Raw for the first time in a long time last night and I do like Dean's understated character. I just don't see him as a lunatic, outside his in-ring style, he sort of comes off like a crack dealer.
It would make more sense to me if the problem they all have with him is that he's a degenerate (not unlike Triple H). It's not like they haven't had crazy people hold the title anyway. If they have a problem with Dean for his mental state they should probably also have a problem with Mankind and Steve Austin, it would probably elevate him to be compared to them actually.
So what do you think Dean is going for here?

Equal Parts:
Terry Funk, Brian Pillman and Bill Murray.
Dean Ambrose.

I think they've kind of toned down some of Dean's craziness. I don't know if it's in response to anything necessarily, but a lot of people didn't like it when it was too over-the-top, which could at times lead to it feeling a bit forced.
Working within the confines currently of his gimmick is great for him and the fans. He's easily one of the most charismatic and over babyfaces in WWE right now, and this may not end up being his only WWE Championship run by a long shot.

He is an oddball for sure. I enjoy watching him live, he as an old school charisma that makes a live match really fun. But I'm not crazy about him on TV.

I don't see him as a lunatic either. He's nowhere near that level of lunacy. He's not even crazy or mad.
He just comes across as a bit weird at times and that he has a carefree attitude towards his health and safety. That's about it really.
When he gets called a lunatic and the announce team talk about how crazy he is, it just feels forced and not true. If he actually did crazy things or do them more often, then it wouldn't be so bad. If he jumped off the Hell In A Cell for example, that's crazy, or in an Elimination Chamber match he put himself through the chamber glass for some reason, be it to get to an opponent or to inflict more damage to an opponent, that's crazy. Even setting a table on fire and going through it with his opponent would help live up to him apparently being a lunatic.
The craziest thing I've see him do is throw himself on drawing pins/thumb tacks when he hit Jericho with Dirty Deeds at Extreme Rules.
The problem is, he doesn't get many opportunities to do crazy things because the majority of his matches are "traditional" matches, where DQ can happen, so that means no weapons, no structures, no leaving the ring for more than ten seconds.
If the Hardcore Division was still alive, he would be the perfect fit for it in this day and age. His hardcore matches would be memorable ones and very entertaining and he would easily live up to being a lunatic. Instead, he's expected to be a "lunatic" without using weapons or structures to his advantage and be within close range of the ring. I can't think of how you can be a lunatic and win matches by playing by the rules every week. :-\
I thought he was better when he was Jon Moxley, man.

I don't think he needs to use more weapons to be a lunatic. I think he does well, I don't think he's a lunatic though. He's more of a common man. He does crazy things every once in a while but the WWE couldn't book a lunatic for nothing. He named a potted plant Mitch, is that lunaticish? I liked when he was stealing belts and running around WWE HQ. Just needs more legit crazy things to do. I hated the Ambrose Asylum and thought it was out of character for him to be hosting a talk show.

He taunted Brock Lesnar and thanked him for kicking his ass.
That's good enough for me.

With him being from Cincinnati I'd say he took Lunatic Fringe from the rock station 102.7 WEBN. WWE probably liked it and they ran with it.
His on-screen character comes across as someone who doesn't take his opponents seriously. He came across as a goofball during his feuds against Jericho and Lesnar. It makes it hard for me to emotionally invest in him.

He also jumped out of a Christmas present and attacked Rollins on RAW.

In the long run, poor Mitch the Plant did not die in vain and instead was martyred so Dean could achieve his destiny as WWE Champion.

Feel the same. He's more of an oddball but commentary keeps trying to force the narrative of him being sort of like a new Brian Pillman when that is not the case at all.
Jon Moxley....was nuts
Dean Ambrose is a cunning animal that plays at lunacy and it seems like its just an affectation to throw off and/or scare opponents.

Did it work with Brock? I haven't seen the match.

He got his ass kicked but its Brock Lesnar.I would've loved it if they let him be ALOT more wild and employ more use of weapons than he did throughout his feud with Brock since in no way was he going to physically match brock no matter how crazy he was.

He is not a lunatic, he is not crazy, there is no reason to make thise claims. I don't really mind him, he is good enough in the ring and he is good on e mic, he just comes off asa carefree, go with the flow kind of guy. He is closer to a hippy than a lunatic. This is a prime example of wwe telling us what they want us to think even though it is clearly not true.

Incompetence by the WWE writing team? Say it ain't so.

He's more goofy than anything. Kinda like the guy everyone has knoan where you aren't sure if they're nuts or just amuse themselves for reactions. What he is is the guy who gives zero fucks. In the days when Cena was using the FU and STFU they could have called Dirty Deeds the 0FG. Whicheck would have been cool. "Lunatic fringe" is just a really cool nickname so they go with it. And straight-laced guys like the commentary team make more of it than others would.

I've REALLY lost interest in Dean Ambrose. Goofy is the right word. Feels like the obnoxious class clown right now.
