Pro Wrestling Sheet has learned Joey Styles was recently released from WWE.

No word as to when the release went down exactly, but his last tweet was on July 29th — just days after a Facebook Q&A he participated in that was described as Joey’s shoot interview.

Styles was extremely open during the chat and talked about not liking the name of the Universal Championship, hating the 3-man commentary booth and why Vince loves Roman Reigns.

Unclear if Joey’s honesty had anything to do with his release, but the video has since been pulled from WWE’s YouTube and Facebook pages.

Styles was an announcer in WWE from 2005-2008 and then transitioned into a position for the company’s website. He was eventually promoted to Vice President of Digital Media Content.

He was also the famous voice of ECW throughout it’s entire run.

"Sucks that he will never be good enough to call Backlash."

Well, I don't know what he's done outside of wwe.com for a while now, but still kind of an end to an era of sorts. If Paul E had not resigned I think the E might be ECW free (not counting Foley as GM)

Didn't even know he was still with WWE. Shame they haven't been using him on any commentary.

Sort of surprised it never happened earlier since his tenure running their website occasionally had stuff that went against Vince's ideas of wrestling and/or WWE. Occurred more towards the pre-Network Era for the website.

There was nothing controversial in his answer on the Roman question, though.

Really, WWE gets so behind and ass backwards about what the internet is, has become, and how the wrestling world perceives it, that he probably got fired for that goof on Alberto Del Rio's initial bio description after his debut where the question was apparently copied and pasted along the lines of "This should make him a big deal, right?" from all those years ago.

Yeah. Funny, though, that whoever uploaded it put "shoot" in the title instead of "worked shoot", which it actually was. No WAY Vince would've let him get away with running that long and saying so many incendiary things about his company. If that were an actual shoot, it would've no doubt been cut off in around 60-90 seconds at most.

Indeed. I remember having mixed feelings at the time while watching the segment. I wanted to cheer for Joey but shoving Lawler wasn't acceptable for me at the time considering that he was "old".

TNA should sign him and call him "J Styles" then they can say "Next week a 'J Styles' is coming to the Impact zone"

Big Vic

its funny because they sound like they are saying AJ Styles. :(

Probably just a way to get rid of an employee who has been around forever who has likely had numerous salary bumps in favour of some punk kid they can pay peanuts fresh out of university....

If he was running WWE.com TNA could definitely use him to fix their website. Would feel weird though having both Mike Tenay and Joey Styles employed but not on commentary.

Apparently Joey Styles and not the WWE owns the trademark to his wrestling name so he doesn't need to change it if he decides to work elsewhere.

Might be similar to Ryback where the WWE didn't care or never bothered to pay attention to one of their stars/employees making trademarks on their own.

I like Joey Styles. He had a really good run in his position. It's likely that it was just time and that he won't be hurting for job opportunities coming out of this. Kind of weird that it comes so soon after doing a worked shoot that they obviously commissioned. I've always thought they could do more with Styles' personality.

It honestly could be just because Vince doesn't want people to get confused between AJ Styles and Joey Styles.
