They really want Balor to be the new Cena, don't they? That was apparent from the Beast in the East promos from last year. Good for Balor, but it does feel a bit...there. I like Balor I just don't think he is the right choice to be the first universal champion. Rollins is a former WWE WHC that never got beat other than a MitB cash in and would have been a great choice as first champion I believe. Would have started Balor off in the mid card and let him get over himself instead of being in the main event right away. Just doesn't feel right to me.

Ziggler vs. Styles on SmackDown to decide the #1 Contender for Ambrose's belt. Styles wins that match cleanly and then Bray Wyatt attacks Ziggler after the match, with Rowan and Harper taking him to the back. "What will happen to Dolph?!?" Cena congratulates Styles elsewhere on the show, but Joe's music hits and he announces that he's signed on with SmackDown, and for some reason, he's drawn right to Cena.

According to the sheets, he's not set to become the next Cena since that belongs to Roman and maybe Rollins right behind him.
Him getting rushed to the spotlight is probably more of a mix of him being a huge merch seller in NXT (and in NJPW) and brands being weak in current top star power because of the split. Same reason why American Alphas became the de facto top team for Smackdown from the split.

I was kinda bored of Lesnar but since he's around so infrequently I didn't mind him main eventing shows here and there as a change of pace. But hearing what Ambrose had to say about him on Austin's podcast just really soured me on him and it made me look forward to Lesnar/Orton even less than I already was.

What's weird about Lesnar is that he looked like he was having a blast when he won the title in 2014. He looked like he was having a blast at Royal Rumble 2015. Then he re-signs with WWE, goes on ESPN to discuss it and gushes about how he loves what he's doing. Goes on to have a killer WM31 main event with Reigns and is written off the next night, looking like a madman in the process.
But everything after that he's looked like he's been totally phoning it in.
I agree with that, he always delivers though. That table spot where he threw Orton and Orton bleeding horrifically were strong visuals.
In the end, I am glad they didn't wheel out Goldberg from whatever senior home they found Sting at. He's not a credible threat to #ChurchOfLesnar either (not that Shane is).

They're still in that trap of hoping the titles can build stars and it's just not gonna happen. They've done their best over recent years to make sure the title(s) mean less and less. The way you build a star is by building their credibility and then eventually pulling the trigger by having them take the title from someone like Brock or Cena. Not by just throwing a title on them and praying.
People complained that Lesnar and Orton headlined but it was BY FAR the best choice to headline. It was the only "big fight" match on the card. Which is pretty sad considering they have two "world titles" now to get it right.

Started off s000 well with the first 3 matches but felt like everything after Cena/Styles was "not good" besides Rollins/Balor
Ambrose/Ziggler match felt like the worst match... nobody was into it at all... just boring... horrible feud... plus nobody expected Ziggler to win... and even if he won, feels like "nobody would have cared"
Lots of people were booing Jon Stewart for some reason... dumb older "guys with New York accents" who def love Donald Trump behind me kept shouting about how they wanted Gallows and Anderson to attack Stewart and "heckling" him and stuff... also said they "can't stand these guys" @ The New Day
Booking of the last 2 matches was really weird... esp Rusev thing... why do that at a PPV like SummerSlam...

Legit felt like an ending to a WCW PPV with the last two matches basically being non-finishes and pretending to have a diva "no show". I get that's been her gimmick but if you're going to announce to the world that she's been suspended and everyone knows it, why would you even pretend like she's going to be there instead of just being honest about? Why on earth would you do two non-finishes back to back like that for the US title match and the main event?
That being said, Brock's finish won't hurt him or Orton any in terms of credibility and may actually help him and Orton but that's because of Brock's pre-existing credibility and not anything the WWE booking/writing has done for him to this point.

Was the reveal of the new Universal Championship on the air? With Foley and Stephanie? Skimmed through the show on WWE Network and I don't think it's there? Did they cut it out...
edit: There's a video of the reveal on YouTube so I guess it aired... maybe I skipped past it but I don't think so... goes from the previous match to a hype package then the Ambrose match... don't feel like checking again
"edit 2:" nvm it's a "WWE.com exclusive"

Crowd sounds so much more quiet on "TV"... feels like on TV they attempted to "quiet" the chants against the belt during the Ambrose/Ziggler match... crowd was going crazy with the chants, was really loud... like 6 different chants throughout the entire arena and loud boos any time it even came into the corner of the screen for a second... broke out into a "DELETE DELETE DELETE" chant also @Hollywood Hasney
When Balor won, it felt like he wasn't raising up the belt on purpose because the crowd would have intensely booed

Also this crowd felt like 80x more annoying / "dumb" than the NXT crowd (which was amazing) I think...
Some guys next to us kept loudly "doing commentary" of every match for like the first 3 hours and wouldn't "let up" with the bit until some1 finally told them to shut the fuck up (in a nice way)
Feels like the crowd was filled with a lot of people like that........

I have no idea what's going on in wrestling right now, but I think putting the title on Finn Balor right now is monumentally stupid. It doesn't do the company nor Balor any justice in thrusting him onto that role so soon.

That first part of the statement perfectly highlights the rest of it.
A one of the guys who has been touted as a "champion everywhere he's been" (since that has recently become a thing in the last couple of years in WWE acknowledging places exist outside of it) and becoming one of if not the biggest attraction they've built up in NXT (and let's not kid ourselves, people know folks from NXT; let's stop pretending they're absolute nobodies even to you until they appear on the main roster), and in a world where all people have to do is pull out their phone and look on teh interwebz to look up anyone they are unfamiliar with if they are super-casual fans who don't know anything besides main-roster WWE... and you act like he was on some untelevised indy circut and just started yesterday.
They let him breathe and built him *relatively* well (as opposed to force-fed like a certain island boy) Yes, they could have stood to wait a few before the main roster shot, but I think this was not only to elevate our new Jeff Hardy (as in cash cow marketing potential) but to kinda put over the new strap, too. Not only can Finn handle it, they *do* need to breed a larger title contention threat pool that doesn't include Lesnar.
I bet if he were exactly as he is now, only he looked like THE RYBACK in "the look" department, you'd wonder why he wasn't hotshot'd into a main roster world championship position ages ago.

Really not sure what to make of Summerslam, although I generally feel like that having watched a glorious NXT Takeover show the night before where things seem a lot less chaotic and forced. I also personally see Summerslam as a show where feuds come to an end but so much of last night had no resolution (Tag and US title, Orton/Lesnar w/Shane)
On paper, I thought the show would be great but the only matches that felt like they belonged on a PPV were Lesnar/Orton and Cena/AJ. To me, it's made the world and universal titles seem like mid-card titles and the US and IC title even lower. Ambrose (as much as I like him) vs Ziggler screams IC to me, with Orton and AJ being the two that should be fighting it out for the top strap.
Finn Balor is an odd case, it seems a lot of the fans that were against Roman being pushed so quickly are behind Finn's push even though he's been pushed harder and quicker. Again to me Rollins/Balor didn't have the big match feel to it.

Enzo and Cass vs JeriKO
Good little opening match. Owens and Jericho are an awesome team. Feel like they should be the ones to dethrone New Day.
Charlotte vs Sasha
Great match, despite Charlotte being sloppy in a couple spots. Sucks that Sasha had to give it up because of the likely suspension.
Miz vs Crews
Good match. Probably the best Crews has looked since he has come up. Right guy won. Crews has a lot of developing to do in terms of his character before he's ready for a title win over one of the best heels in the company.
Styles vs Cena
Match of the night, although that shouldn't surprise given the participants. Might be the new frontrunner for match of the year even. Both busting out moves we haven't seen. Sweet submission exchange. Cena even pulled off a fantastic code red. Usually it looks slow and too coreographed, but this time, he hit it like rey fucking mysterio. And holy shit, the kickout from the avalanche AA. I'm unaware of anyone ever doing that, and Cena sold the shock brilliantly. Finish of the clash right into the forearm was equally brilliant.
New Day vs The Club
Anderson and Gallows have been pretty bland in ring since coming here, and it sucks, because I've seen much better from both of them. Dunno why they haven't "brought it" yet. But yeah, this was still okay until the ending. The fuck was that? When have you ever heard of a face team getting themselves disqualified and keeping the belts? Baffling. Ending bombed as hard as Jon Stewart's into.
Ambrose vs Ziggler
Jesus this sucked ass. I was really looking forward to this. I really like both guys, and they did such an awesome job building it, that I thought Dolph could win. The match itself was shit. The pacing and flow was completely off, and everything they did looked clumsy and awkward. I'm also going to take this oppurtunity to say I've never liked how Ambrose doesn't sell the inital strike he receives after he hits the rebound lariat. But now the move is even worse because he's progressively gotten slower in executing it. So tonight, Dolph hits him, then stands there like an idiot watching him do it, then waits for the clothesline. It looked terrible. Worst of all, Dolph got pinned clean. What was the point of building up dolph if you were going to reduce him to enhancement talent in the match. After all the things Ambrose said about him during the build, pinning him clean makes Dolph look like a bitch, and even less credible than before he won the #1 contendership. Just rotten all the way through.
6 women tag match
Good little filler match. Feel like Naomi is vastly unerappreciated. She is money in the ring, with a unique and cool moveset, and with her new entrance, a unique identity. Would really like to see her and Becky mix it up.
Balor vs Rollins
Wrong guy won. Rollins is better in every aspect than Balor. Also, lemme ask you something. New guy with bland personality and sub par mic ability gets hot shotted to the title. Am I talking about Reigns or Balor? "Oh but Balor is awesome in the ring!" Can't agree with that. His matches are good, and sometimes, with the right person, very good. But they're not spectacular enough to make up for his faults. At least not on the main roster where the entertainment aspect is king. Maybe it's because his entire moveset consists of moves that were made popular over a decade ago by wrestlers I like more than him, but Balor's work really doesn't impress me as much as it has others. And what is the point of the demon king shit? Like, it looks badass, I'll give you that, but they're all talking about how Balor goes into the darkest depths of himself when he brings the demon out....then he proceeds to wrestle and act exactly as he does when he's not wearing it? What? Anyway, with the rant over, it was a good entertaining match, but Rollins really makes a better champ than balor. Speaking of Rollins, if he's not going to bring back the curb stomp, that fisherman's buster into small package should be his finisher, cause that move is fucking sick.
Rusev vs Reigns
I actually really liked this. I love the Roman Reigns that just loses control and rampages. The feud had been mostly slapstick up til now, when it could much more brutal and intense with these two. This will make things a lot more personal, and give it more natural, real feeling heat. If they follow up right, they could give this feud a real clashing of titans feel. This is all providing rusev gets revenge and fucks reigns up, or else he's just going to look like a pushover and all the heat is going to die.
Orton vs Lesnar
Standard Lesnar match til the finish. Gonna have to wait for more info to find out what happened. If that was actually the planned finish then that's utter garbage, but I'm pretty certain it wasn't.

Was going to write my thoughts, but this is it basically word for word, especially on Balor's weaknesses, AJ/Cena, how bad the Dolph thing was and 1000x with Naomi!
Only thing I would argue is that the Lesnar finish was fine, keeps him looking like a crazy monster, but it shouldn't have finished the night. It had to have been planned, but maybe it just went too far blood wise, ala Eddie Guerrero.
Really think Smackdown has big problems now. Not much they are doing is interesting, not many guys are over and they are relying on a heel AJ to keep things heated with Ambrose, who isn't WWE champ material imo. They need call ups and they need them now.

Fignuts' comments pretty much sum it up, although, as a whole, I thought this was a great PPV. Did seem quite long-winded at times, especially for anyone who watched the pre-show, but overall, this is a step in the right direction for WWE.
The show had a "huge" feel to it, with a sold-out crowd, a massive set and some stellar match-ups, I hope this demonstrates to WWE that they don't need Triple H, The Undertaker and The Rock etc for Wrestlemania. Cena, Orton, Lesnar and Jericho are perfect as the "old timers" who are still in prominent positions, otherwise, the rest of the roster really shined last night, and with the right match-ups and build, Wrestlemania 33 could be an awesome event if they learn from the last few years.
Rammsteinmad
08-22-2016, 11:58 AM
However, whether it was the planned finish or not, those elbows from Lesnar were brutal and dangerous. I knew straight away we'd see blood from them, and watching it just made me think "for fucks sake this is who the WWE are gonna keep feeding their guys to". Just completely unnecessary.
Rammsteinmad
08-22-2016, 12:09 PM
Just rewatched it and kept pausing it, obviously was a work, the second elbow looked super stiff, still unnecessary, imo, but obviously this will lead to a rematch, probably at Wrestlemania, since there isn't really anyone else on Lesnar's level.
Poor Orton, can't imagine what it'd be like to be told the end of you match will be that Lesnar is gonna beat the shit out of you. :(

Honestly, I have no problem if it was a work or shoot. If it was a work though, you can't have two matches back to back close the show with what were essentially non-finishes. Put Reigns v. Rusev on earlier if you're going to finish both matches like that.
