What really are the key differences? My PS4 is quite old now, and am wondering whether an upgrade has any real benefits?

More power is basically all there is to it. There's going to be more TV spots and a presentation showing games running side by side.

I have one on preorder. Finally something to make my purchase of a 4k TV worthwhile.

Itll be here tomorrow. Dont think my 4k has HDR support although there may be a firmware update for that apparently. Either way it will be a boost and I'll just get an HDR capable set with my tax return if necessary.

Should be getting mine in the next couple of hours. Need to switch the hard drives so I had to repartition an external drive for backups last night so I can just dump the PS4 drives in and restore from a backup.
Don't forget to deactivate your old PS4 as a primary before setting up the pro. You can only have none primary console.

Final Fantasy XV is currently expected to get two Pro patches due to some of the stuff Square is working on.
In other PS4 Pro related news, there's going to be at least two Pro patches for XV. One will add 4K and HDR support and will be available at launch, and the other will add 1080p60 support, with a target release of December. Right now they're getting a consistent "40 to 50 frames" so there's still progress to be made there.

According to reports from Eurogamer and Digital Foundry, certain games are currently having problems running well in regards to Pro patches. Games like Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Skyrim: Special Edition actually run better without it while The Last of Us varies depending on the tv/output screen.
More games might get discovered to be better without the patches since Digital Foundry are still testing the games supported.
Super-sampling on PS4 Pro offers detail improvements, but the anti-aliasing boost is actually rather limited, as the game's base temporal AA solution at native 1080p resolution is actually very good. The presentation is fairly soft anyway, so again we have a 1080p/4K divide: on an ultra HD display, we'd rather play on Pro and enjoy a huge resolution boost all of the time and frame-rate dips only occasionally. However, at 1080p, we'd prefer more consistent performance throughout the game and so the base PS4 provides a smoother experience overall. But the point is that once again, we shouldn't be seeing these divides at all, on any title.

I felt this might happen. Its almost as if there had to be a mandate that the console couldn't be too good. It doesn't have the features I'd like to see out of an improved PS4. The bottom line being that it will really struggle with 4K and it can't play 4K bluray when the Xbox slim can. If you want an awesome PS4 you're getting a compromised thing and if you want any PS4 you're not getting much bang for your extra 50%.

World of final fantasy looks like ass on the pro. Way worse than the regular ps4. The dof effect is turned up to ludicrous. It's distracting. You can just delete the patch though and it plays in upscale 4k just fine.
On the flip side infinity warfare looks absolutely astonishing on the pro. Best thing I've seen on consoles so far graphics wise.
I think the issue is with the games doing half ass pro patches that are trying to add in new effects. It's like with world of final fantasy adding in depth of field to the pro. It's almost as if the game is trying to render it as standard ps4 procedure and the extra horsepower of the pro is all going to the depth of field and making it 100 times stronger than necessary.

Also world of final fantasy is a surprisingly good game and I recommend it to any fans of old school jrpgs or pokemon as it is a pretty perfect mash up of the 2.

Hasney I just noticed in the switch thread you said you don't have a 4k set yet? Wow you should really reconsider with the pro now. 4k sets are cheap as hell now. They came down much quicker than 1080p sets did. You can find a Vizio smartcast p series 50 or 55 inch for sub 600 in places. Comes with a 6 or 7 inch android tablet for the remote too. Supports 4k, hdr, and 802.11 ac wireless. I'm about to get one of those real soon myself as my current p series is presmartcast and doesn't support hdr or have a cool tablet lol.
But seriously you should think about it. It may be upscale or supersampled or whatever for the various games but hot damn it is so pretty. I never played journey before but I got the ps4 version with plus a couple months ago. Booted it up last night for the first time and it was jaw dropping in the upscale 4k. The sliding level during sunset is one of the most incredible things I've ever seen. You should see ratchet and clank upscaled oh my. It makes everething so clear and crisp and it basically doubles as added antialiasing because you have to touch the screen with your eyeball to see the jaggies now.

I know, the only thing stopping me is that I might be leaving the country in a couple of years so I don't want to invest right now. Wish it had a 1440p mode and I'd hook it up to my monitor.

Pro patch for Battlefield 1 got pulled due to it giving an unfair advantage for online multiplayer games.
Making things a bit worse is DICE not being allowed to explain why the patch got pulled or how this situation happened to begin with due to the NDA Sony has with Pro developers.
