It makes no matter to me really, i didnt buy a WiiU because there was no zelda (only nintendo I don't own) but with zelda 100% dropping on Switch it's a day 1 buy

Nintendo some amiibo goodies for the game.

8-bit Link will reward you with a random number of barrels. You might find rupees inside too!
Ocarina of Time Link will reward you with a random amount of meat.
Toon Link will reward you with a random amount of fish.
Wind Waker Zelda will reward you with a random selection of plants.

So, not quite as impactful as the Wolf Link amiibo, then. Scanning that figure brings in Wolf Link as your battlefield buddy, and from my hands-on experience, he's both helpful and adorable. There's also going to be support for the three Breath of the Wild amiibo, but it's unclear to what end.

Personally, getting the Switch day 1. A better version of the game and it's portable.

Januarys event should hopefully make the decision easier when they fully confirm what's hitting the Switch year 1 so you can see if the whole system is worth it or not.

I could tell from some of the Switch review vids, just their reactions. They couldn't review Zelda, but you could tell how blown away they were, dying to talk about it.

Which was strange, because a lot of the views for the Switch itself were lukewarm.

Seems weird to be lukewarm when the system seems to have provided one of the best games of all time on day one.

One of the reviewers was posting on another forum.

Previous all-time favorites (abridged):
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy VI
Super Metroid
Super Mario World
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Metroid Prime

BotW might be better than all of these games.

And then the Switch died, 6 months later :(

If Zelda becomes and absolute must play videogame, that should be more than 6 month lifespan already. That takes you into new Mario Kart, Platoon and eventually Mario, which could also be a mega title.

This was absolutely crucial for them, they gambled it all on Zelda, and it looks like they hit it out of the park.

#BROKEN Hasney

Mario Kart is April, ARMS is around there too, Splatoon 2 in summer as well as E3 then we're into the fall for Fire Emblem, Mario and allegedly Xenoblade 2.

Combined with the indies announcement, I think it'll be my most played console this year.

I would have gotten a switch if this was Switch exclusive (and it allowed me to play my Wii U games). I wonder what the sales of the Wii U version will be like.

Maluco
03-02-2017, 08:29 AM
I am wondering that too. I went the other way and traded in my Wii U. Got £160 for it, 3 games and a Yoshi Wiimote. Only £110 to add tomorrow for the Switch!

I think a lot of people who own the Wii U (not many) will have done one of those two things. Either "I only want Zelda" and keep the money, or "I better trade this in before the value drops"

Maluco

Yeah, Nintendo has never been a big deal over here. Looks like they're selling a lot as Zelda has sold out on the Switch in a lot of places, but other than the Wii, Nintendo was always at least second best.

The Master System and Mega Drive outsold the NES and SNES.

On the other end of the spectrum for completionists, no-one knows yet. Been ranges of 50-100 hours to complete the main game with some side stuff, but that's not doing 100% of the stuff.

I honestly can't stand speed runners. Watched some guy do the world record for "beating" SMB3 in like 8 seconds because he typed in some glitch at the beginning of the game that transported him to the final scene with the Princess. Like how is that even an accomplishment at all

Some details from Destructoid's review about how big the game's scope is in terms of stuff to do. Reviewer beat the game in around 40 hours but still had a ton of side quest stuff left to do. Giantbomb hinted at their play time being around 90 hours with also some stuff left.

But there's over 100 shrines to find, several superbosses to fight, hidden gear to locate, and optional mini-questlines, so I'm going to be busy for a while longer. Speaking of extras -- in case you're wondering, the amiibo support is mostly harmless. You get some extra items you can otherwise find in the game, or some Easter egg type stuff that isn't overpowered (you can find armor in the first few hours that is better than most of the figure boosts). The Wolf Link companion does feel like a massive thing in the form of a bite-sized paid piece of DLC, but I don't feel like it was necessarily "cut." A massive 100 hour or more adventure makes this choice easier to digest.

According to Nintendo, Breath of the Wild broke the record for highest selling launch game in company history. Previous record was Super Mario 64 for non-bundle console launch games.

Nick Wingfield of the New York Times spoke to NOA president Reggie Fils-Aime, and got the lowdown. According to Nintendo the sales of the Switch in all of the Americas and Canada outsold the Wii over a two day period. Zelda: Breath of the Wild also took the crown for "most sold launch game" for Nintendo.

I have mixed feeling about the "Flurry Rush" or whatever it is called when you get a perfect dodge.

Also I wish enemies followed you further off of their camp. After you get to a certain point they just turn around leading to an easy kill for you. At least stand guard at the line or something.

According to players, its possible for blood moons to occur during the final boss fight and during cutscenes. Already discovered if it happens during a very specific cutscene, you won't get the item given and your save file gets messed up a bit.

Bonuses and quirks with the radiant set

The pieces causes more Stal-type enemies to spawn, though if you have the full set with the bonus, it also acts as a disguise (like Kilton's monster masks) for Stal monsters, allowing you to walk among them without them going aggro. The set bonus also causes you to deal more damage with any weapon that is made of bones. Also fuck Savior

Even though the game is lacking dungeons, I really like what they've done with the shrines that have little "bite-sized" puzzles in each one to solve. I am on 7 hearts and the obvious shrines around the first two/three villages are all gone. I have picked up 2 of the memories, but am a bit lost now. Not really prepared to go into some areas with those floating enemies and the like, but apart from capturing these memories, what is the main story i should be following?

I know there is no fixed rule, but i have been just exploring, practising my guardian killing and looking around "safer" areas for a while now, but will never get all these memories just doing that.

What "quest" should i be following to push the game on and find more shrines and gradually build myself up?

Disclaimer: love the game

Knowing there arent items to found is such a massive negative. Knowing that any area i enter can be solved from the onset save for story development is disappointing. There's this brilliant map marker system that is basically useless because you can do everything the first time you get there.

what is basically the cornerstone of the franchises gameplay for literally 30 years suddenly absent. What makes a zelda game? Having link in it or is it the dungeon field dungeon paradigm?

I recal when this entered development they mentioned wanting to diverge from the zelda formula...and the game works so i cant hate...but damn...batman arkham asylum is more of a zelda game than breath of the wild... :'(

Zelda:Breath of the Wild is a great open world sandbox game...but i hope the next installment returns some of the staples of the franchise.

My biggest gripe with OoT and onward was how much goddamn hand-holding they did with the fairies and explaining basically everything. BotW was a huge breath of fresh air for me. They basically drop you in this world and let you figure it out.

Since I've beaten the game and moved onto other titles my playtime has waned, but I still fire it up occasionally, and I have already put 120+ hours into it. Easily my favourite game of the series.

Destor
05-06-2017, 02:53 PM
It might crack my top 5. Maybe. Feel like the combat difficulty was increased (I've only died once but in previous titles i wouldnt even take damage) but everything else was really dumbed down. Keep waiting for them to match MM or even the origional in terms of puzzles/side quests and they just keep going the other way. Combat is the best of the series. By far. But theres only 10 types of puzzles and all can be solved after 2 hours into the game.

Game is an absolute 10/10

But might be my 6th favorite zelda.

No reason you could make this same game with its scope and sandbox but still retain that you might have to return with new items to progress later.

The map is seriously the best map ever put in a game but its not needed. Why place a chest marker when you get to the chest 100% of the time ?

You could have put any sprites in this game and it would be 10/10, it didn't need to be Zelda, in fact, it could well have been a completely new series if they had wished.

I enjoyed it so much, but can definitely see why not being a Mega fan of the series or having expectations helped the playing experience be "free"

In fact i think that freedom and the feeling of being alone and navagating this big world is what makes the game so special.

For me this will be game of the year, and thats awesome. Im having a great time with it. I was hoping for GOAT. Its a high bench mark.

I think making a sandbox the way they did is awesome and i hope they can do this again (even though non-hyrule zeldas have never sold well.) I just dont know why we need to choose between sandbox and zelda style progression. I think they would marry well...

I like the themes they had for the dungeons....but they needed to be bigger and there needed to be at least twice as many. The great fairies should have had more to do with things as well and needed to be harder to find instead of just a gold sink. The dragons are the most epic thing in the world.....and are basically useless other than a few mins of cheesy farming tricks to max some gear out....

Keep the open world and the freedom....but make the story a bit more focused, a bit more linear. Flesh out the side characters and fairies more. Add some mystery and more involved sidequests. This game is great....but it was so very close to being THE ONE.

One of the few areas I noticed I couldn't solve before I had completed a certain part of the game was Akkala Tower, I couldn't figure out how to get up it until I got that Revali's Gale thing that shoots you up into the air.

I think I really would have enjoyed it much less with those changes. I think when you make a compelling world to go out and explore, that's what I want to do in my open world games. With GTA, I usually end up getting bored with the story dumps, especially when it's in direct contrast to how I've been playing. Every thing bar the first few shrines being totally optional is my favourite thing in a game in a long time and giving it more direction might have hurt that for me.

All I need to know is that the princess is in trouble. Everything else is my story about how I did it and not some cutscenes.

I'm not against linear games. Yakuza 0, Nier and Persona 5 I've adored this year. But if you make an open world that's compelling and a joy to explore, it's going to be my favourite and I don't want anything taking me away from being out in it.

I assume the Master Sword is unbreakable but is there a bow and shield that are unbreakable too? Hate having to switch weapons so often. I am afraid to use the good weapons I have found due to everything else breaking aft4t 4 or 5 enemies.

If you have diamonds, Champions tier weapons and shields can be repaired or replaced. Haven't broken them yet so not sure which actually happens since I rather keep the diamonds for more important things.

Just finished my first dungeon. I went to the Zora people (just choose a route at random). Feeling a little underwhelmed since there are only 5 total. Felt it would have been bigger. Would have felt fine if it was the beginning dungeon but I don't think there is technically a first. I dunno.

The shock arrow mini boss dude was hard as hell though. Fuck him. That fight was epic.

Ive done 3/4 of the mechs. They are all about as long and similar difficulty. Each is about 6 rooms and a boss.

Kinda wish they'd cut the number of Korok seeds by like half. I am somewhat of a completionist and do love the exploration aspect of the game obvs, but I'm sitting at ~90 shrines and like 150 seeds. Travelling the world looking for another 700-odd seeds just doesn't feel like a very fun time.

Destor

It is highly unlikely, as a hardcore completionisist, that i round up all 900..but maybe.

Currently farming dragon shards to max my Tunic of the wild set and then off to stop Gannon.

...but im totally going to do it in green.

Locke

When you get all the Korok seeds they give you a seed that looks like a golden turd. I think it's a subtle message about how stupid it is to be a hardcore completionist

Prolly the lynel from whom you must collect shock arrows

Destor
05-29-2017, 10:12 PM
Thats what i was thinking but its oitside of the divine beast so i dunno.

Lynels are the apex predators in the game. Once you get your perfect counter timing down though theyre a snap.

You can get a perfect counter via side step kn their bull charge or via backflip on their melee attacks. And it has a pretty big window too for both.

Stasis upgrade will let you control their archery and nukes too,

Post every blood moon i go farming them for gear. Drops are used for most of the combat armor upgrades too.

Locke
05-29-2017, 10:28 PM
I haven't mastered the technique for fighting lynels but I find them easy/repetitive, and even moreso for Hinox/Talus

There's this one boss in the gerudo desert that swims in the sound around this rock, wish there was more stuff like that in the world

And what's with the dragons? The first one I saw was up on some mountain and I was able to kill it somehow, it was a really cool moment where it was early in the game and I had a time limit because I was using some potion to help me stave off the cold, and I had to chase the thing over mountains and shoot it from the air in a few different locations to kill it. It dropped a scale I think which I offered at a shrine and got some thing

But all the other dragons I've found I just shoot once and they drop a shard or something, then fly away

The one in Zoras domain was a menace early in the game. Good thing I had most the arrows already from a prior shrine that handed them out copiously. That wasn't my first one though. When I first dropped off the plateau I had already been eyeballing that big coliseum like structure to the west. I went over there and ran directly into a fairly high level Lynel on the bottom floor. Had no context to what the place was or what this monster was. It could have been a pushover for all I knew. After over an hour of flinging myself at it with my feeble gear I moved on. Tried to go up the coliseum but eventually got to a point with black moblins that killed me at that stage. It was then that I realized this was a diff kind of Zelda and I was in for a wild ride.

But you can tame any horse you encounter.

Also killing enemies is important for the drops. Late game armor upgrades are costly!

Fucked Gannon up. Rode a horse for like 30 seconds when I started the game and they put me on one at the end. Took me forever to get the controls down

Wonderful game. Wish they would have combined the shrines to have less but longer/more difficult ones. Usually find myself puzzled a lot with Zelda games but nothing really stood out as here. Was a blast though. Love open world games. Zora Domain was awesome. Felt like I was going to war also when I went into the castle which was great.

According to reports, upcoming DLC pack will support the ability to have a second save file for the game although only for the new Master Mode.

This was how it was explained in the comments:
For anyone wondering, Master Mode is really just a mode - it can be turned on and off on the same save file, Treehouse's Audrey confirmed this in a stream during E3. It's odd that they're allowing us a different save for that (even if it's the logical choice), but suppose most people would like to keep their Master and regular adventures separate, or at least that's what I'll be doing.

Whenever the mode is turned on, it writes to its own save file and when turned off, the regular save file gets used again.

https://www.destructoid.com/you-ll-have-a-separate-save-for-zelda-breath-of-the-wild-s-master-mode--443629.phtml
