Better Jobber #1

This is an idea I came up with a few weeks ago and mentioned to Destor. Let this be the place where the underappreciated who will never get a fair shake in the better wrestler polls can have their day! At the very least, these should be awesome for nostalgia reasons and ridiculous arguments.

I'm defining "jobber" as someone who has less than a 25% winning percentage with at least 25 matches under their belt. I'm using profightdb to verify these stats. If they're slightly off somehow and there's some technicality that should make them ineligible, I don't care (I'm talking to you, STD).

As for what defines "best", that's up to you. You can vote based on who was the blandest, most generic one. You can even vote based on who you think was the better technical wrestler (lol nerd!)

AND WE'RE OFF! Who will job in the inaugural "Better Jobber" poll and who will fail miserably at their job by being a winner?!? You decide!

Holy fuck I had no idea how awful David Flair was! I was a 12-year-old mark back then so everything was real to me, but fuck me Flair was fucking terrible. He couldn't even hit the bloody ropes properly. I always thought his character work was good when he played a psycho, but Jesus... I voted El Dandy just for having to work with that.

The best "jobbers" were proper enhancement talent.
I'm actually not really able to remember any pure enhancement guys for the most part, as we're so removed from the era which is why my mentions for the most part have been misfires.

But realistically you aren't supposed to remember them, there's a select few that you do.

The Hardy brothers, Scott Taylor, Justin Credible, Thrasher, Mosh, etc. all started as enhancement in WWE. They didn't have characters. They had terrible unmemorable ring attire, they had no entrances, but they were kept around to do the JOB.

Tracy Smothers wasn't a jobber on the indies but was a jobber in WWE.

I realize this is going nowhere, but my main point is it's hard to label EXACTLY what a jobber is.

There are certain guys that were total jobbers, aka they are puny little dinkholes that enhanced the size, strength and ability of the featured talent. They guys who didn't tan, really didn't hit the gym and were essentially twinks. Those are the REAL jobbers... crash test dummies that make the top stars look like super heroes.

Dwayne Gill is a perfect example of that. His job was to take the moves and lose in 2 minutes. Obviously he had the run as Gillberg, but he was the James Elsworth of his time. Him being part of the company because he made the Razor Ramons and the Undertakers look fan fucking tastic.

A guy like Barry Horowitz made a great career out of it because he was so fucking professional. He got a push beyond jobber. Even as a jobber yeah he'd do his 2 minute squashes but he'd also get to go 5-10 minutes and get some "shit" in.

Alright, I don't know what I'm getting at.... just having an inner monologue about jobbers in my head.

There were two types of jobbers back in the day: guys who did T.V jobs/opening match at major house shows and guys who did straight T.V jobs.

Your first category is more of your "JTTS" like Iron Mike Sharpe/S.D Jones/Johnny Rodz. They did a lot of t.v jobs with a win mixed in here and there, and won about half their house show matches.

Your other category are straight t.v jobbers like Reno Riggins, Dwayne Gill, Steve King, Frank Williams etc. These guys would work the occasional house show, losing to guys like Iron Mike Sharpe, S.D Jones. The difference is, they hardly if ever won.

I was listening to a podcast where Quackenbush and Brice from Chikara were guests and they were talking about how once RAW started with the multiple shows taped/taping, these Dwayne Gill/Reno Riggins types were essential, as they were doing 3-4 jobs per taping and made your guys look like superheroes. I think a really good enhancement guy like this was essential. They really in those days made your main talents look like super heroes, you had that direct contrast of average chump vs Mutant freak. The less you stood out and the more average you were, the better. Particularly if you were short. That gave you a consistent. One would imagine that these guys understood their role, and the more they understood and accepted it, the more money they made. (Obviously it wouldn't be "lucrative" but one assumes the better jobber you are, the more you're brought in to make the stars look great).

And you look at these days when nobody seems like a superhero, you see the value of those matches. It was just hard finding that happy medium, because nobody wants to watch 2 hours of jobber squashes.


Also, there was a pay bump you got when Yokozuna would squash you with a bonzai drop or when Beefcake cut your hair (I think those were the 2)
