No it's exactly that. The wrestling market in India is growing rapidly. Jinder is doing what is essentially a Hulk Hogan gimmick there and foriegner gimmick here. Its pretty brilliant. Past few years theyve done more dates in that side of globe and theyre def interested in doing more. Even if this is just a hot shot run it establishes Jinder as a key player and should grow the brand in those markets even if you push Jinder down a bit in a month or two. And if the run goes well domestically you can keep him at the top. That is more dependant on how hot the babies your throw at him are though...

I get the whole market share argument and pushing someone of the market you want to get a foothold in. Wasn't that the whole point of Khali though? If it worked so well he'd still be doing something with WWE. Need a legit worker and if they give Jinder the torch to run with, that's fine, but if you just did it to shock people and have him lose it on SDL or the next ppv then there really wasn't much of a point to it.
Destor
05-21-2017, 11:54 PM
If it were up to me ideally yoid pull Jinder from the current tour immediately and send him on a press tour in India. Play the interviews. Play him being a champion to his people. Have him do promos on one being a chapion of his people in the face of American racism. It gets heat from one market and sympathy from another.
Use his lackies to draw him back in and build up the rematch with Orton from there.

Khali played a role in the growing of the India market. But he was limited. Too limited to do much outside of one match/angle and then he was spent. But yeah khali does deserve credit. He helped things along.
Him going under in the near future doesnt matter much imo. Long run...short run...its whatever. Hes established now. Thats what matters. Tonight he was made a star.

Maybe....he needs to have more than one night. It's pretty easy to fall back to jobber status after a world title win. Ask guys like Jack Swagger.
What you said about the press tour is true though. Maybe not stay in character but I like the press tour idea. I don't think wwe has the foresight to do something like that though. They always fail at that kinda stuff it seems.

Def doesnt stay in character during the interviews. He neds to shoot promos to send back that are in character. Totally would need to ham it up as straight humble white meat baby. I didnt make that clear admittedly.

The same could happen here. The man makes the title, not the other way around. If the whole idea is to crack the Indian market, they aren't gonna do it with a guy who was champ for a month and is spinning his wheels in the mid card. He needs to be a champ and stay credible for a bit.

Well this is just what happens when you split the "world title" in two. WWE says "Let's just try this out".
If Mahal ends up being a legendary heel then it's genius and anyone who wins the world title in the future looks better. But considering all the other times they randomly put the world title on a jobber because there's two of them so they can fuck around and risk destroying the credibility of one... I don't have much hope.

I feel like I have never seen a good Jinder Mahal match, and now he is WWE champion. Definitely the worst and most underdeveloped "star" to ever win it.
It is phenomenal how hard he has worked to get the body he has, but it is way too much, too soon. I don't understand why he wasn't given any momentum before this and a chance to rise up the card and actually have good matches.
Then I look at how meekly Nakamura has been brought in, where he is just another boring guy already. So weird.

For you
I would argue for a lot of people, given the far more rapid decline in TV numbers than other shows. RAW, for example, is a boring show, where very little unpredictable things happen.
Seeing Lesnar/Goldberg at Mania made me sad. Two genuine stars clashing for 6 minutes, one was 50...but they were stars and it was great.
I am not excited about seeing Jinder Mahal clash with anyone. It is a step down an already disappointing rung of the ladder.

Didn't say once focussing on other markets is bad. I think it's a great idea for the company and for the business, but once again, the hardcore fans who stick with the product and love wrestling get the short end of the stick.
The fact is, the network is the worst thing that could happen to the product, not the business.
Now they can throw Jinder in a world title programme with no momentum or build and just say "nine, ninety nineeeeee maggggleeeeeee" and it is ok. They don't have to push PPV anymore so they can shovel out any crap with no effort. "It's only 9.99 and that's worth it for the content that is already on there alone!"
Lazy writing and routine booking will remain forever, because the more hardcore fans they pick up around the world, the more stable they become as a business and the less they have to try. That's the truth of it, and also the reason I don't have the network anymore personally.
The network is the final nail in the coffin of stars in wrestling...and that sucks.

Every angle on the show doesnt need to be for the same audience. It's never been that way. Wrestling has always been best served as a variety show. Jinder is no different. Post Nitro wrestling fans have such a sense of entitlement that the business has really suffered.

But with so many options now, does it even work if you're trying to serve multiple audiences? I mean, I don't mind not watching the actual shows anymore like I am now and just checking out a highlight when someone recommends it, but that's not going to help advertisers.
If they get to a segment that's not for them, they're likely just going to do something else and not come back to it. I'm not even saying to make the show for wrestling fans, I'm just saying that a jack of all trades and master of none approach isn't going to cut it.

Disagree. Works better now than ever. Just fast forward to the part that is for you.
When the revenue drops you'll have an argument. Until them faulting them for trying new things for new audiences is just silly.

I'm happy they're trying to cater to different markets. Jinder looks like a million bucks and is serviceable enough in the ring. The only real fault to him is that he has years of jobber stink on him.
Feel like a better option to cater to the Indian market would've been to just bring in Akam from the Authors of Pain. Legitimate wrestling background, constantly improving, fucking massive/believably could just come in and kill Orton, and he'd have Paul Ellering with him.

Jinder and the Bollywood Boys are better than Akam if you are going for that market in my opinion. Only knock I have on Jinder is him not winning the ATGMBR at Wrestlemania and the stuff they did afterwards with Gronk. If not for that Jinder would have had alot more momentum goi g into becoming #1 contender and wouldn't be as much of shock.

Think we are discussing two different things, albeit somewhat related. You are arguing about Mahal being a story to relate to a different group of people. I am talking about the abject laziness in the way he has been put there.
They didn't even try, just said, look guys, he is number one contender...now look, he is champion now...in two steps. He was getting embarrassed on TV three months ago. Not just losing a lot, but being the butt of jokes.
Its not about what appeals and what doesn't. It is smart to build in stuff that appeals to different markets. It is about how it is done. It is about the company's complete inability to build stars or even develop wrestlers personas and make you care about their feuds and interactions.
Case in point, just look at Dolph Ziggler. A talented performer, but what even is he anymore? He is a mess that is worth nothing. Not even talking about as a draw, just not intriguing or interesting in any way anymore. There is an inherent laziness on how WWE writes TV in an era where they are a monopoly.
Pushing Jinder is fine, but just cause I don't have to pay for it, don't give me him in the main event winning the title, mere weeks removed from being a jobber. Make me care first, make me want to see him wrestle. Make me care about Jinder or whoever is beating him.
You dont just go from zero to hero in a month and just go "He is great now btw". It is lazy, stupid and a symptom of the network era, in my opinion, of course.

I come from an age where a guy could be an undercard act in one town and then go and with in weeks be a top act somewhere else. Its not alien to me at all. And Jinder, despite the short turn around, was red hot going into that match. You can call it lazy, but it was effective.

Agree with Fignuts. While Brock Lesnar is a bad ass legitimate champion, he rarely shows up on Raw and never has a match so he doesn't bring anything to Raw as a show. Determining which show is better is based on the top champion just doesn't work.
Does any anyone Jinder being Raw's resident jobber one month and SmackDown's World Champion the next make the whole SDL roster look weak?

I mean.... they could have done it better I guess, but given where the company is at, who cares? If they made an indy darling champ, it's not like that would work out the way people wanted it to. May as well try someone completely out of nowhere.

and tbh I've been a fan of how they've done it.
Ziggler needs to go somewhere else for a couple of years. He's done everything in WWE that there is to do short of going on last at Mania, he's been pretty much at the same upper midcard level for a number of years, turned face, turned heel, had a group, IC/US/World title reigns, MITB win/cash-in, what is there left for him to do? The audience has moved on from him.
