I stated in the cm punk thread, thst I felt rvd's matches started becoming overly routine and formulaic. Well, the same can be said for Mysterio, so this is a tough one.

Gonna have to go Mysterio though. He spearheaded large part of what made wcw a competitor in the late 90's. And he achieved a ton of success in an era where it was still a big man's game.

mike adamle
05-23-2017, 06:05 PM
It's tough off the top of the head, but the more I think about it, Mysterio accomplished a lot in both WCW and WWE for a long time. Rob Van Dam accomplished a lot in ECW, but treaded water for a while in WWE.

Mysterio didn't tread water far as much in WWE unless you count all the injuries. Up until about the time Sin Cara came around and Mysterio teamed with him Mysterio was involved in (unless he was injured) an upper card program and it was normally one of the more entertaining ones. And he always did very well in them.

Rob Van Dam's programs weren't always as interesting even though they did result in some entertaining matches.

Plus I think Mysterio's legendary work in WCW is better than Rob's legendary work in ECW.

Rey was straight up boring in WWE. RVD was a lot more exciting and had signature move spots that always seemed to get the fans out of their seats. He had many tremendous runs as Intercontinental Champion.

The only thing that really holds him back as far as his legacy goes, and it hurts me to say it, because it's a real shame, is his legal trouble practically as soon as he became both WWE and ECW World Champion. If not for that, his run with the two belts could've been really amazing and something special, along the lines of Angle's run as the "EuroContinental" (European and IC Champions concurrently for the uninitiated)... even with this glaring flaw though, my vote goes for Rob all day, every day.

Watched the Raws and SmackDown's and even that ECW Head to Head special and was really into Rob's character and was shocked when he won the belt that night at One Night Stand. And then I was really into his reign, he just kept on winning and did a really good job of looking superior against the likes of Cena and Edge.

Rob Van Dam was in...... one memorable story/angle in his entire WWE run?

This alone, without even getting into their in ring abilities puts Rey way ahead of Rob Van Dam.

He won the WWE Championship @ ONS 2006...the 2005 edition was a special tribute to ECW in its original form and in fact many fans still refer to the '05 show as the last TRUE ECW show and with good reason.

Seeing Bischoff at the end saying "FUCK ECW!" only to get his ass handed to him was such a great moment.

Rey hung around in WWE about four or five years too long, but he was consistently entertaining. His World Title runs sucked, but it's not his fault he was put into a position for which he was clearly miscast.

Rey and Jericho's 2009 feud is one of my unheralded favorites. Just excellent matches throughout and brilliant story telling. The Punk feud was great. The Eddie feud was great albeit with a silly gimmick match attached to it.

That alone makes him better in my book than RVD without even comparing their runs in their previous companies. RVD had maybe one good proper WWE feud and he didn't evolve during his whole run.

My point is that I judge a wrestler by what they do with the opportunity given.

Mysterio in WCW along with the other luchadores didn't get the best booking, but they were nearly always the best part of the show. I'll take Rey over Kevin Nash or Giant.

But Rey is iconic. He is an important part of wrassling history imo. Also find his spot monkey antics to always be entertaining, other than the 619 which, while impressive on it's own, is just a really lame finisher for such a great athlete. Whatever though, he is still the titz0rz.

Meh. I get that logic, but he still should have followed it up with some kind of other move afterwards to sell it. The 619 never looked all that powerful really, an added top rope spot or flashy submission afterwards would have helped it ALOT. Too many times it was 619 and done. I honestly hated it ever since the first time I saw it.

Rey Mysterio.

Both were very entertaining in the ring but Rey gets the nod mainly for becoming a huge star in two major companies and having more memorable moments than RVD.

In terms of WWE impact, could argue Rey played a big role in getting the WWE interested in cruiser wrestlers and giving them a mega star for the Latino market. While RVD was good for bringing over the ECW type crowd, his style itself didn't have the same impact since WWE already had others that were bigger stars (Jeff Hardy) or could easily replace him (ex. Shelton, Morrison, Kofi).

Loved RVD for a while, but Rey is a fucking legend. I thought he was amazing in WCW, and he was a part of a lot of great stuff in WWE. I think some people want to take that away from him because of his World title run, but the way that he was booked was not his fault. Rey would go out there and have the best match of the night with a myriad of opponents for most of his WWE career. It's not fair to say that he was boring in WWE. If that's what boring is to you, wrestling may not be your thing.

All of that, plus Rey is STILL killing it in Lucha Underground today. It's gonna be hard for me to vote a lot of people over Mysterio.

The first few years of Rey's run in the WWE are the reason he got the belt. Even after the bad title run he had some fantastic matches. It was only when he started being injured ALL OF THE TIME that the in ring work wasn't good anymore. And I mean what can you do when you're immobile because of a bad knee and your whole game is based on being quick and agile?

They're signing Kyle O Riley. He wouldn't even be allowed within 20 miles of the palace of wisdom if it came to charisma.
