I redboxed it and beat the first major dungeon. Absolutely a contender, from what I've played but I'd have to finish it to make an accurate judgement.

Probably the best JRPG in a VERY long time.

It's fantastic, but the only bummer is that story and character wise, it doesn't live up to the highs of 4. Which is a shame, because the combat system is in the best place it's ever been along with the dungeons being designed instead of generated.

Could have dine without Mementos too. As well as the daily text messages, especially once you've beaten a dungeon "Hey, do you think his heart will change?!" Every day. I think it is 50 hours of greatness stretched out to be 90-100 hours.

Oh yeah, I still love them. They're just not Persona 4's characters that were just a slight level above.

Nah, think of the games like Final Fantasy where there's little nods to the other games, but it's a whole new setting and story.

Oh yeah, those. I got one before the 3rd palace and another before the 4th. They definitely make things much easier, especially once you find which enemies to sleep on, like the high pixies in palace 3.

I'm abusing the SP accessories in an attempt to farm the mats necessary for the unbreakable lockpick in Palace 4. Getting the aluminum sheets at a good clip....no luck on the liquid metals though. Anubis is a stingy with the liquid metal.

Surprisingly I ended up with half the required liquid mercury on my first initial trek through the place, and just under half the required aluminum sheets. Figure I might stick around and get up to level 37 so I can go ahead and capture the LVL36 Baboon and LVL 37 Anubis enemies.

I hung around the other palaces long enough to capture all of their personas, save maybe 1, but I'm not sure that one was catchable anyways.

This game is QUICKLY moving up my all-time list, that's for sure. I love it. Can't get enough. I feel like I may end up putting more time into a single playthrough of this game than any other, save maybe The Witcher 3 and Xenoblade Chronicles on Wii. Speaking of which, stoked for Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Got my son a switch for Christmas...but hey, added benefits for me with that release lol. It's kinda funny I've had this switch sitting in the closet for like 2 months now, along with Mario+Rabbids and have Odyssey ordered already, and my son is constantly BEGGING for a switch and doesn't think he's getting one. Hope he doesn't chance across it being nosy like kids tend to be; he'd probably open it and start playing it lol.

I maxed the politician so i dont have a level cap on personas now. Totally worth it.

So I'm done grinding the Futaba palace first run. Captured Anubis and Thoth. Got 12 liquid mercury....and only 10 aluminum sheets. UHG. Can't really fight the Anzu enemies that drop aluminum now as I am overleveled and instakill thanks to ryuji and don't feel like starting every battle without an ambush, thus wasting time and resources. Kinda sad :(

Oh well, I'll get the goods in mementos later I suppose. Really wanted that eternal lockpick, though lol.

I've gotten frustrated af a couple times when I hadn't saved for a little while I was farming the stuff only to have an Anubis target Joker with instakill moves. Once he targeted me, missed, then immediately targeted me with a different instakill and landed it -_-'

In a game where your main character dying is automatic game over, having instakills is definite wekasauce.

Doesn't matter anyways, I moved on from that palace now. I'm in early September, right before the school trip. Ended up with 16 liquid mercury and 12 Aluminum (used some in a different craft I was knocking out for progress on the crafting trophy). I'm going to make another trip into mementos in the next couple of in-game days, before the trip, and I will just farm a bunch of aluminum from the random drops on the ground in the new area by continually reloading whichever zone I happen to find one in first. Also hoping to go ahead and knock the red phosphorous requirement out at the same time, too, as they are super rare and I already managed to get like 5 of those from Palace 4.

Dunno if you watch any anime but I have noticed a distinct similarity between Persona 5 and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders. In the anime all of the main characters, good and bad, are tied to the different tarot cards like Sun/Star/Hanged Man/Emperor, etc, and their powers are this invisible creatures that stand behind them and attack for them and can't be seen by normies. Several of the bad guys in the anime are converted to the good side by removing a small parasite from their forehead that changes their cognition. Also in the overall JoJo narrative, the magic power they all have comes from an energy called Hamoan, which is a bless instakill move in P5. Kinda weird how much they align.

Another excellent reference in P5 I noticed was when Yusuke rearranges Futabas rip-off power rangers action figures into the Ginyu Force pose from Dragon Ball Z, and then the next question you get when school is available after the break is about King Kamehameha and what he is holding in his hand in a statue of him and one of the answers is "A Dragon Ball".

Convenient -_- I quit farming when I caught the Anubis LOL then had to ditch him in favor of my confidant link spamming lineup of personas for the next month+ of social interactions without a palace.

Oh yeah, I know I can summon another one, I just don't have the space for him right now. I'll max a couple more confidants soon, probably Yusuke and Miss Teacher Lady and won't need to carry an affiliated persona at that point so I'll have more free spots.

Trying to be efficient with my money atm, don't want to overly waste on summons if I don't have to.

Also tend to leave one spot open so when I run through mementos and instakill everything, I always automatically get the persona from that potential battle. Then I just go into the menu and discard it to free the slot up again. They are always available in the velvet room once caught, after all, unless you catch them while in a battle and immediately discard them due to lack of space; then you don't get credit at all.

I'm on the day before we fly out to Hawaii now, have made my way all the way down to the bottom of Mementos, done all the requests other than the cheating gamer one that you can't do the first time through, got the aluminum for my eternal lockpick, pretty sure I have all the personas available from mementos thus far, and I'm sitting on a cool million yen. Also up to level 41. Feel pretty good about my current situation. About to go dick around with the velvet room and progress with the twins a bit now, then prob grind back to a million loots. Still want more aluminum so I can go ahead and craft everything for the trophy other than the one requiring red phosphorus. I'll get those in time.

Also, I did get the politician up to rank 10. USEFUL ability that gives you. Does it work when fusing though? Doesn't seem like it will as the twins warn me about destruction and the result preview is still blacked out. Don't want to waste on a fusion that won't work.

Affinity reading every day for whoever you need to progress is such a time saver. Luck reading for extra stat boosts. Money reading before you go into a palace/mementos....she has so many useful abilities. Forget what it's called but that other ability she has where she tells you what abilities a confidant has is kind of useless, though, considering the internetz.

In my mementos run the day before the Hawaii trip I ended up getting the twins all the way up to rank 8, left with 1.2 million yen, about 3-400k in treasures to sell, and had everyone other than Futaba at level 42+

What can I say, unlike most people, I enjoy grinding. When I set my grinding goal and then finally achieve it I feel like a freaking star.

Also, don't know if you are aware, but the confusion money trick everyone talks about on the interwebs works both ways. I haven't used it at all, but I had an enemy confuse Yusuke and he threw 57k Yen at them the next turn. I almost threw my controller through the TV out of shock/frustration.

The twins Ive stopped leveling. I missed a persona I need to craft one of theri requests (tier 6 I think) and im not using any online guides so I cant be arsed to go and hunt down every floor of momentos hoping to get lucky...

I remember 2 of my earliest super grind campaigns quite fondly.

I grinded out to level 99 in Chrono Trigger. That was the first. Just kept running through the Black Omen over and over and over again in one particular area until YAAAAS 99!!!~~~

The second, and probably most useful super grind I swear by, is grinding out enough levels early on in Final Fantasy 7 so that Barrett with a fire resist ring can somehow survive the Midgar Zolom's beta attack the first time you try to cross the swamp. Equip enemy skill material on him, suck that attack up, then escape and RRRUUUUNNNNNN. Heal up. You now have a single attack that carry you through like 2/3 of the game.

And i think all social stats are important. Youll need each maxed to max all confidants. Its when to max them thats the question...hard to pin that down on the first play through...kindness is def the hardest to max though imo.

Yeah I'm currently locked out of two confidants due to guts, one of them has been locked for a whole palace. I guess I mean it's a priority right now and kindness or intelligence will screw me over later. Made a bunch of lockpicks in the downtime because Ive been very inefficient with locked chests so my proficiency is alright at the very least.

I should probably be messing with fusion more but I am holding out for like 2 more in game weeks. I am extremely close to being able to do rank 9 and 10 of the twins (need to gain 2 more levels for rank 9, 4 for rank 10) and then I can fuse any persona I want other than the few still locked by confidants and the NG+ specific one. Saving up all my money because I imagine some of these fusions I am going to pull off are going to be hella expensive. Especially considering I plan on itemizing several of the high level ones and then prob have to summon a couple of them again for my line up.

I'm at the initial entry to Palace 6 now. And UHG why did that smug son of a bitch have to join my party. Want to stab that asshole in the face with a brick at this point.

Love Catherine, I even got the costume DLC and have had Morgana dressed as a sheep for my entire playthrough. Joker in the Vincent costume changes the battle theme so I use that too every now and then.

Just broke up for Summer and it's great how they have crafted the world so all these background events that seem ambient or side story end up in the main plot. So well done.

Getting Sae as a confidant out of nowhere actually surprised me, also Akachi is a little bitch and I really want to see where they are taking his shit-heel angle. Kind of hate the reporter too, her perks even seem like they suck but she gives charm points so it's okay I guess. Still have never been charged late fees, but I don't want to get too comfortable when it comes to DVD rentals.

That entire sequence is absolute greatness, had me second guessing if I was doing the right thing and then if I'd fucked it all up.

As an aside, I transfigured Bugs into a weapon for Makoto after securing the treasure route and forgot about it, so it caught me completely off guard when she showed up to the boss fight and started punching away with a teddy bear strapped to each fist. Ridiculously good.

Yeah I've been naturally using everyone, tagging in with Hifumi's LV1, baton passing and using analyse or the R1 weak point finder thing. Status effects seem like they probably net you at least 3 unique lines per character (afflicted, a turn under the condition and heal).

Still think Akechi is a shithead, but I did actually enjoy him being a shithead a lot. That off screen death makes me feel like he's not really dead and will turn up alive in P5Arena Silky Voice Karaoke Dance Party or whatever.

Finished with 5s on everything except Guts, which I must have missed by one Nontondo session. Thought finishing that 3-part book would take me over the finish line on my last section of free time but it wasn't to be. Got Ann, Ryuji, Kawakami, Sojiro, Takemi, Tora, Hifumi, Mishima and The Twins at Rank 10. Felt so bad rejecting Ann and Hifumi, damn video game dating. Makoto locked me out of hangouts for ages because of my lack of charm. Had Yusuke at 9 so just missed his item.

Most importantly: Recruited Mara.

Will be coming back to this in a few months to clean up on NG+, also picked up Persona 3 on the PS3 and will either get Persona 4 or PS2 or maybe look at getting a cheap vita with Golden or something. I'm mostly blind on P3 but think I already know all the big twists in P4 which kind of sucks but I'm sure it's still great regardless. If it wasn't clear enough already, I really really enjoyed this. :heart:

Does it reset you to Lv1 and take your money / items like the other games? Think in P3 you got to keep your MCs equipped gear and your current personas, in Golden it took everything. You always get to keep your compendium, personality stats, shop unlocks and room decorations though I think.

You keep your money and all equipped gear. You keep your compendium as well so while you cant make personas above your level through fusion you can buy them. You also keep social stats and you get the perks of any confidants that were maxed.

Got everything i need to fuse the shadow for rank 9 of strength. Need to be 49 first. Think im 44 now. May grind it out in this dungeon. Dunno. I have the rank 10 shadow already in the compendium so i wont have to grind for that level requirement and once i finish 9 i can max the confidant. When i finish this palace i will only need i think 4 empress ranks and story confidants and ill have maxed all. Should be very very easy.

That's cool that it gives you plenty of time, P3 was the hardest to get all Social Links maxed, absolutely zero margin of error. I cut it really close on P4 Golden too, think I got Ai done on the last available day.

You get around three weeks extra time (I think) but certain links aren't around anymore (for obvious reasons), including the two new links, and some switch to a reduced schedule, then there is also another week but that's exam prep so clubs also become unavailable. I ended up hanging out with Konishi for most of it because I only had him rank 3ish when I stopped the killer and he just mopes around on the street EVERY SINGLE DAY IN HEAVY SNOW. Think I still had music girl, Ai, Sports Bros, Daycare and Naoto left when I went into extra time. I didn't do very well min/maxing the free affinity you get for your party and the Dojimas tbf, got them done asap for the most part. Kept Kanji at 9 for as long as possible because his original persona is the best.

All party members also get a Rank 11 event w/ persona evolution over the three weeks so it's a lot to fit in.

I actually never beat P3's superboss, it was 1 vs 1 and you needed a very specific set of resistances and top level skills because one of her moves did guaranteed damage above the HP threshold and there is absolutely no way you can survive it, if she ever hit you with a weakness you were dead. She fully heals if she ever drops below a certain HP limit so you need one specific move that will do enough damage to kill her, which requires Messiah and something else high end I can't remember, but if you use it too early she counters with an unblockable Megidolaon then fully heals EVERY turn. You cant buff, she's immune to debuffs. Absolutely crazy. I didn't stand a chance.

so i prefer turtle strats. Hang back and chip away until the boss dies. Well what took several runs for ne to realize is every 5 turns they do a damage check. If you didnt deal enough damage they do an all-out-attack and you insta die.

So turtling is off the table.

Once i realized that i had some shape to how the fight worked.

Round 15 or so they start running through all elemental attacks. If all 4 are down they do an all-out-attack and everyone insta dies. A persona with no vulnerabilities is a must for this reason.

So now i have a joker thats basically immortal and i try again. Jokers only role is items and not having a weakness exploited at this point.

Once you hit the final round check the damage req is dropped but theres one final gimmick: you have to kill them together. If you dont they cast recarm and gain 50% of their 8k hp back.

My repell stats kept killing on out of turn. Thats when the controller died.

Eventually i got lucky and won but this was rng hell especially on merciless.

Strong dislike for this fight. I will never do it again.

Reward is fucking isnane though. Damage immunity accessory excluding almighty.

Merciless is totally manageable. Enemies are a threat. They can nearly (or actually) one shot you if they hold you're weakness. This makes combat very engaging and rewards you for being smart. If you make the star confidant a priority so you can tag in and out you'll be versatile enough to handle it.

On NG+ the first 70% is a non factor since youre going to have endgame persona out of the gate.

Personally I would only ever play on Merciless for NG+. Doing a standard run on Merciless...would be tough. You would have to make sure to have the right persona on joker to exploit weaknesses since you wouldnt be able to tag until around the...4th dungeon? Maybe earlier but still. It would be a sizable challenge.

If you set a penalty on yourself that you could only recruit persona from the compendium that were your level on a NG+ run I think it would be a fun playthrough throughout.

I had to use Sun/Fortune strats because I knew a money farm existed but didnt realize that is was centered around momentos bosses and by the time I went to do the money farm I had beaten all momentos bosses that were susceptible to confuse...When I play it again I wont make that mistake

I believe you get an ability from him that allows you to ask for more money during negotiations, basically I just keep asking and asking until the shadows get pissed at me and I knock them down again and just repeat the negotiations. Some of the enemies give you between 5000-8000 yen per turn so you can walk away from some battles having farmed like 50,000

If you combine that with the fortune confidants money reading you can get extra money when you cant get the suns perk to activate and if you combine that with the stars perk of extra money on 1 round ambush wins you can extend it further...it pails in comparison to the confusion strat though...

You can build a persona that can almost garuntee success. Confuse+ confuse chance passive + stagnant air.

FINALLY BEAT IT... longest god damn game.. but I'll forgive that. finished at 135 hours.. I usually have very little patience with games that have insanely long cutscenes/dialogue but I rarely found myself frustrated by this because I was so invested (though the Hawaii trip really started to get on my nerves)

I like the idea of what they were doing because my general feeling is that law enforcement/government/"society" doesn't do what it needs to do to deal with problems that could be simply solved. "Vigilante justice" also usually gets on the bad side of cops because they cant handle something doing their job better than them because they have small dicks or something. tbh, the reason I got so hooked by this game was after palace 1 where Kanoshida just confessed to sexually assaulting students and told everyone that he was worthless. It was like a fantasy... I see all these shitheads getting accused of sexual assault and they all either vehemently deny it or just say nothing. It was like a fetish porn watching him just admit to being as shitty as he was accused of.. so I thought that was really cool.

They are essentially forcing people to think the way they want them to think. Its brainwashing. If these men are villians then they should use their powers to get evidence and seek convictions. There is no justice to their actions.

Persona 4's group was just. They were trying to find a killer. Detectives. And they exposed the truth when applicable and handled problems direct when they were the worlds only hope.

The Persona 5 cast never made an effort to seek justice when in all cases save 1 these were matters that could have been handed over to the police.

Since you have to go to the bottom of Mementos to get to the last dungeon & since Mementos is optional up to that point, do you have to go through the entire thing in one game day if you hadn't gone through it?

I believe the Phantom Thieves are unjust.

They are essentially forcing people to think the way they want them to think. Its brainwashing. If these men are villians then they should use their powers to get evidence and seek convictions. There is no justice to their actions.

Persona 4's group was just. They were trying to find a killer. Detectives. And they exposed the truth when applicable and handled problems direct when they were the worlds only hope.

The Persona 5 cast never made an effort to seek justice when in all cases save 1 these were matters that could have been handed over to the police.

Is it the way they think though? The "distorted desires" are just presented to them, it's kinda unclear who the judge or morality is. Igor?

I'm only a few (in-game) days into NG+ Merciless, died three times in a row during the tutorial section (first battle after the save room is introduced) because I encountered a party of three Mandrake. Eventually the game decided to let me get away with facing two. Tough start. Lives up to the billing.

I'd actually recommend Merciless for NG+, once you get access to your old gear and can control your party members its actually pretty balanced. Jack Frost was just a fucking dick though with his Lucky Punch spam.

lol I don't imagine I'll have much trouble even on Merciless. On my original playthrough I maxed every social link, stacked a ton of money and crafted every Persona other than the one you can't until NG+.

Bought the costume pack since its on sale, P4 pack uses the boss music instead of Reach Out To The Truth, and while the dancing pack has a sweet remix it does make Joker look like a bit of a twat. Can't allow myself to run that costume in a palace :lol:


Morgana gets Aegis and Teddie costumes to add to the Sheep and a couple of other cool ones. Quite interested to see what Akechi has for his attires, since in the Catherine pack he dresses as the villain.


Also early in the game there is a dialogue option that says you need max guts to select. So I went ahead and selected it this time...

Persona 5 R has been confirmed for PS4, speculated to be an enhanced version similar to P3 FES and P4 Golden. I am still playing NG+ and I am 100% willing to buy that. They got me.

Could that mean a new palace? Post game extension? More personas (where is my brain with an eye!?)? Shiho social link? Phantom thief Hifumi? Rank 11 and tier 3 personas for the Phantom Thieves? If I can change Hecate back into Carmen that would be great.

I just beat Persona 4 & doing the "true ending" now.. it's a great game but holy shit there are some really annoying things about it that they thankfully fixed in 5

I'm up to palace 6 in NG+ and I only have a handful of confidants left to max, Sojiro plus a few I ignored last time through. Hopefully in P5R they can fix Ohya so she's not completely useless, and if they could erase Shinya from existence that would be cool.

Persona 3 can be pretty jarring, the biggest two things are that you only control the MC in battle (yes that is as bad as it sounds) the story progression is stilted and takes forever to actually get going. Oh, and the entire combat side of the game is basically Mementos, storyline missions are mostly just a boss, so it's really grindy. It's still a Persona game at it's core though and some of the social links are really good, story really picks up late game. Then there's Junpei…

P4 Golden brought the fusion system up to speed with P5, so you choose which skills you want to inherit etc. and also added a bunch of other quality of life stuff. Adachi S-Link. New character with S-Link and a bonus dungeon. Extra six weeks playable of the in-game calender. You can also go outside at night to hang out with daytime Social Links (boosts affinity so you don't have to waste days with them). Extra events and voice acting for some of the text only scenes too.

Honestly I started a new game plus in 5 and I can't be fucked with all the cutscenes. I watched the first set of them because I didn't remember a lot of the game from Kamoshida and before, but after that, nope. Can't stomach watching them eat at a hotel buffet for 15 minutes. And if they made a remake I'd feel bad skipping through any of it

FES is basically vanilla but it has an optional "epilogue", which is standalone from the main game and is pretty much a 100 floor grindfest.

The actual "enhanced" version of P3 is P3Portable on the PSP, which I believe gives you full control over your party but takes away the free roam and instead just gives you a list of locations to click on. Also I think some of the non vital story events were removed.

Haha, I finished my first playthrough a year ago so I don't mind sitting through it all again. Will probably be a long time before the P5R comes out too so I shouldn't mind then either.
