K I'm drunk so I'm posting another comment.

I've never seen a wrestler get so unwatchable so fast as I did with Graham. Fantastic seller. Great facial expressions. Got too fucked up on drugs and it pretty much cost him everything. Especially when he came back in 82 with a Karate gimmick. Lost all his muscle mass, shaved his head and became downright dreadful. They actually cut short his return feud with Backlund because he was so awful.

This is a great point. I went with Graham, because he carried the company for a year + did that. Piper made a lot of money and was integral too, but something just feels wrong to me about putting Piper over. May not have been thinking clearly though.

I wish there was a website that aggregated financial stats regarding wrestlers and let you sort of compare how much they made over their career, how much per year, etc. Obviously you'd have to estimate and there's a lot of subjectivity on who gets credit for a house, but it'd still be fun.

This isn't a wash like last round.

If there was value in it people would have done it. As it is it didnt soar very high the first time. 18 months on top? And then a decade of being a "legend.*"

Good promo, should have been a manager after 88. Biggest claim to fame was a talk show spot and a great movie. Better actor than he's given credit for. Loved his guest star spot on TV's Highlander.

"If there was value in it people would have done it". Pretty sure Piper's Pit has been repeated constantly over the last 30 years if you need a DIRECT example. As far as his character in general, if you can't see the Piper influence in guys like Pillman, Ambrose or basically anyone who has tried the "loudmouth lunatic" gimmick, you're just being one of those biased assholes. Wait until STD finds out about this.

#1-norm-fan

Right. Once he came back in '89 though it's not like he went all Triple H holding everyone else down or The Rock coming in and "robbing" younger guys of WrestleMania main event spots. I'm wondering who got held back by Piper. He was kinda just "there". Even his one lowly IC title run in '92 was just a means to put Bret over.

If that week long transitional token WWE legend title reign as a tag champion in the mid 2000's was what Destor was talking about when he says Piper was taking spots from other guys after his run on top then... Jesus. That would be a hell of a reach.

I'm sure it wasn't what he meant though.

It was both. I don't think it was just that week-long nostalgia run, and the phrase "nostalgia run" itself should say something. I think it's just that he was in major positions that other people could be in consistently and constantly from after 1988 until about 2009. He may not have put every down to the Sleeper, but he was there and clogging up a spot someone else could have taken -- which is fair criticism.

He wasn't "clogging up" anything. He was a big enough star to warrant legit full-time main eventer status and he was always below that or out of the picture altogether. No one should have taken his spot against Bret at WrestleMania. No one should have taken his short feud with Lawler. What else did he even do that "took a spot" period? He had a filler feud with Flair but it never really went anywhere outside of some house show matches I think. We can argue WCW and his Hogan feud. But first thing's first. Pretending he was undeservedly hogging up the spotlight at any point in his WWF run(s) post '88 is just... CLEARLY insane. lol
