Things I've picked up from PostWrestling and DirtySheets...

After Cena loses tonight he will not immediately begin a program w/ Undertaker just yet.

Cena will challenge Shinsuke for his #1 contender spot at WM at FastLane (Cena is advertised for the show). After that he will begin his road to WrestleMania and begin a program with The Undertaker

As long as Nakamaura looks strong going in against AJ I'll be happy, but it seems likely that Taker will somehow "cost" Cena his "chance" to "main event" Wrestlemania.

I mean, come the fuck on. Streak is over, Taker winning wouldn't mean shit. Cena winning wouldn't mean shit either. There's nothing to gain from this.

Ya. He will beat it with his next title. Maybe they want to save it for next year since Brock will probably be gone. It will be the huge draw. Probably lose a couple times at ppvs leading into next Mania with the storyline asking if Cena has lost it and is only a shell of himself.

Cena taking the title from Lesnar to break the record at Wrestlemania would have been awesome. Given their history and given the fact that Cena is way more likable than Reigns, it would be a cool moment instead of WWE just acting like it is.

Rumor is that Taker is on DDP's Yoga and may do another 2-3 WM matches. :\

Is that going to magically make him not require an oxygen tank after 5 minutes?

Funny thing is undertaker said the same thing about hogan years back that if he was his age he probably wouldn't be doing what hogan is, he's now several years older than hogan was at the time and still seems to want to wrestle, despite his last few matches being a combination of dogshit and botches.

Assuming they actually do Cena-Taker, its going to undo the rub WWE wanted for Reigns all because Vince sucks at actual long term plans and payoffs. Same for undoing the farewell moment at the end of Mania because Taker and WWE refuses to stick to it being his retirement.

The original plan was leaning towards Cena-Taker last year and Reigns-Taker this year with the idea of this year being Taker's retirement and Reigns getting another big rub for his mega stardom. Instead Vince/WWE panicked and rushed the Reigns match early but didn't follow through with the rest of the plans.

His last few matches have been pretty great. On par with his matches with HBK, Triple H, & CM Punk? No. But they weren't dogshit by any means.

The more I think about it, the more I come to the possibility of another "End Of An Era" match, where the previous one referenced the Attitude Era, this one will reference the Ruthless Aggression Era.

"Dr. of Thuganomics" John Cena vs. "Dead Man Inc" Undertaker

As I stated last week, I see this more as a special attraction match rather than a storyline based match.

Almost feel that Angle should be the guest referee for this, but after seeing the end of Raw, I guess it will be him & Ronda against H's and Steph after-all.

I would be alright with it if, and only IF, we get a crotchety Undertaker. Who is just pissed off at being summoned or called out or whatever. His whole angle being "I keep trying to retire, but you keep calling me back. Do I have to strip naked in the ring to get my point across? I am done, leave me alone."

From there, he tells Cena that he doesn't need a marquis opponent, he should BE the marquis opponent. Then rip into him for making the same mistakes as Flair and Hogan.

That wouldn't be too bad to be honest, but I'd rather see it after a lengthy retirement first. Maybe if he can still go he can come back in a few years time. As it is, year in and year out... it's just another match now.

I have been a wrestling fan for over 20 years and so I believe that I am more qualified than the average fan to express my opinion. I think the WWE are making a mistake by doing a Taker vs. Cena match. I don't know what either wrestler would get out of this. If this match does take place however, I think Undertaker will actually defeat Cena at Wrestlemania. Cena would then permanently retire the Undertaker at another PPV.

Fignuts
02-28-2018, 07:24 PM
Honestly, if anyone deserves a part time schedule, its Mysterio. He's given so much of himself to the business. Additionaly he's still a big enough name to be a draw, and the whole reason he's in such phenomenal shape is because he hasn't been on a rigorous wwe schedule.

Just seems like a no brainer to give him what he wants, and then rake in all the inevitable merch sales that rey always generates.

#1-norm-fan
02-28-2018, 07:25 PM
Taker-Cena would be cool for the spectacle at least. Cena-Mysterio would probably be a fine match but Mysterio isn't a big enough deal to warrant it. It would feel like a complete throwaway match.

Fignuts
02-28-2018, 07:28 PM
I dunno, if they built it up right, they could make it more meanigful than it looks on paper. Didn't Cena and Mysterio debut in the WWE around the same time? Maybe build off of that.

Could see Rey-Cena be as big or maybe even bigger if WWE taps into the Hispanic market with Rey.

Cena-Taker is bigger in terms of hype or dream status but they can make a ton more money off of Rey-Cena if they played their cards straight with that market.

With how few weeks are left in this year's Road to Mania, both of those potential matches are getting the throwaway treatment anyways considering the lack of build time and nobody likely getting any real lasting rub from it.

02-28-2018, 07:55 PM
I think 5 or 6 years ago Taker vs Cena would be bigger than Rey vs Cena could ever hope to be. But now, the spectacle has lost a lot of its magic, in large part dud to Takers age and limitations in the ring.

He lost a log of the mgic with the steak ending, and every poor match hes had since has taken a little more each time. Reigns match was probably the best one, and even that was just okay.

It wouldn't be about giving someone a rub anyway. It wouldn't be ideal but Cena-Taker would be fine on short build considering their statuses in the company.

Rey could draw in the Hispanic market but you can do that with any return match he has. To have a match with Cena, I think Rey would need to be properly re-introduced and hyped a little first and there just isn't time for that.

Yeah the pop he got at both the Rumble and in Japan during a NJPW show just for the tease of a future appearance is enough to prove he barely needs any time to have his star power rebuilt.

He's one of the very few legit worldwide stars where his name alone is enough to generate a ton of interest regardless where it happens.

#1-norm-fan
02-28-2018, 08:23 PM
He's never been treated as a star on the Cena/Taker level by WWE though. Hence his big return after years away being just a random rumble appearance. People know he's a big deal in wrestling but he's just under megastar level in WWE. It would be... weird.

Like if Jericho randomly came back and faced Cena it would be cool from a wrestling standpoint but it would also be odd from the standpoint of Cena being a guy who should either be facing a young main eventer or having a dream match against a legend at Mania and Jericho just doesn't really seem... there...

What the fuck do you mean it could make more money than taker-cena "if they play their cards right with the Hispanic market?"

Umm no. They just cater to the market with Rey to get the huge merch sales and interest from it just like they did in the past when he was in the company. Its why they've been desperate for years at having another Rey-like star but failing with Del Rio, Sin Cara, and Kalisto.

Its also why when Rey was on Smackdown during the UPN/CW days, he helped bring in a huge Hispanic market for the show.

I'm not saying Rey's as big a star as them. I just think that in 2018, Cena vs Rey means more. Taker being the broken down mess that he is, you'd be having the match just for the sake of having it, despite how bad it would likely turn out.

At least with Rey you have the story of Rey remaking himself for one last big mania moment, in match that would likely be stellar.

I just don't think the spectacle of taker vs cena is that special anymore. They missed their window.

I wanted Cena vs Joe last year. Could have been a great story of Joe being the indy guy who never got his opportunity while Cena was "handed the world". Even bringing in a little indy stable to all take their turns at Cena before they finally face at WrestleMania. Rather not see it rushed though now.

I’m not sure if Rey Mysterio has much to offer at this point. He was never a huge attraction like The Rock, Undertaker, Brock, etc., to warrant having him come back on a part-time basis...and taking away TV time from younger guys trying to establish themselves.

I don’t mind Rey Mysterio having “one-off” matches maybe once or twice a year, but I don’t think it’s in the WWE’s best interests to offer him a part-time contract. Cena vs Mysterio would be a complete and utter waste. I also don’t want to see Undertaker ever wrestle again FTR.

Cena calling out Steve Austin? NOW we’re talking.

I think Undertaker challenging Strowman could be interesting if the WWE are interested in having Taker wrestle again. Have Taker get a fluke victory over Strowman at Mania....after having been dominated.....and then have Strowman defeat and retire the Undertaker at the next PPV. This accomplishes two things:

1) it shows that Taker has heart and never says die.
2) you put Strowman over in a big way by having him be the one to retire Taker.
