View Full Version : Who is the "face of WWE"?

This post got me thinking.

I can see that I have been attacked in an extremely personal, vicious, and disrespectful manner. However, instead of resorting to sandbag tactics myself, I will choose to be the bigger man and respond respectfully. Here are reasons why I think my idea is good:

1) The Shield vs. Wyatt Family feud was a big hit and was still untapped. Fans loved this feud between the two factions and it was far from being played out. If the WWE chose to bring up this feud again, it wouldn't even be close to being stale. Still lots of untapped potential here.

2) It further establishes Braun as a top main-event guy. Braun is already trending as a main-eventer, but I believe him being the leader of "The Bludgeon Brothers" would really put him over the top. With Roman Reigns being the 'alpha' of The Shield, you could really establish Braun being the number one antagonist against Roman Reigns (the face of the WWE).

Shield vs. Wyatt Family (Bludgeon Brothers) part II could do good business for the WWE and could add further credibility to Braun by making him an alpha leader of a group that opposes the alpha leader of another group. Unfortunately for Bray, he is no longer worthy of being legit opposition to Roman Reigns.....whereas Braun is. These are reasons why I think my idea is good. In the future, I really would appreciate it if you could respond to me in a more respectful manner.

Well, of course years ago it was Hogan, earlier some other dudes, blah blah, then Cena was the face of WWE for years, but I don't think that's the case anymore. I don't think it's Reigns either, not at all. Do they even have one now?

Braun is the face of the WWE....after Cena. As long as Cena wrestles Cena is the face of WWE.

Not sure if anyone has said John Cena yet, but that's my vote.

The face of the WWE is still John Cena, but it is transitioning to Roman Reigns. After WrestleMania, the transition will be complete. Although many fans will disagree, Roman Reigns is the correct choice.

Hm, damn. Didn't know so many people still consider Cena to be their face.

I don't know why WWE is so fucking against any effort towards evolving Roman Reigns as a character. I don't have any problem with Reigns as the guy. I understand the choice, given what the company has evolved into over the years. But they don't have to alienate your older, more traditional wrestling fans.

Just put some fucking work into the guy's identity as a character. As it is, he's just a guy right now. It's like they're doing it out of spite now, like some stubborn child who refuses to cheer up hours after he got punished, because he feels like such a victim.

So do I. Cena himself can be really funny. He was awesome in Trainwreck. Well, he was the only reason I watched it after seeing him in the trailer.

I know the the cliché wrestling fan advice is "turn him heel", but fuck it's a cliché for a reason. How many wrestlers have found that it factor character when turning heel? Do it now, while you still have Cena to draw and rake in merch and let Reigns find that special something that will appeal him to young and old fans alike.

Here's your answer right here.

But Cena also is in bigger Hollywood movies, Make-a-Wish, morning shows, Nickelodeon's Kids Choice Awards etc.

He's really the face of the company right now until he decides to leave it.

With respect to those that claim that Braun Strowman is the 'face' of the WWE after John Cena, I think you have substantial gaps in your understanding of the business. Roman Reigns is the clear cut answer. He is in the same position that John Cena was right before Wrestlemania 2006, where it was apparent that Cena was 'the guy', but hadn't been officially passed the torch yet. Lesnar will do to Reigns, what Triple H did to Cena.

Who is the face from what stand point? Fans is Braun. Company is Roman.

This. Have him smash Brock with a chair a la Mania 17 and become the guy. Have fans hate him that he couldn't do it alone and yet he is out talking himself up and calling himself the big dog that retired Taker and dismantled Brock. Have him recruit the Usos and Samoa Joe and have them run roughshod.

You have Cena, AJ Styles, Rollins, a returning Ambrose and a returning face Strowman (after a stable beat down) that could easily take you to Mania next year.

Even a slow Joe turn could elevate him too.

When Cena is no more, you have an established guy with an actual attitude to turn face and be a badass.

Really can't understand why they always play so safe. Just give us something, anything.

Reigns has been handed every torch possible. Daniel Brian handed him a torch. Triple H handed him a torch. Cena handed him a torch. Undertaker handed him a torch. Cena is still the man, as it stands.

The probelm with that is he hasn't taken the torch. All the handouts mean nothing if you dont do something with it.

Cena. WWE has yet to make a star equal in his stature and until they do, he's going to remain as the "face" of the company for the foreseeable future.

Daniel Bryan had a really good chance at becoming the new "face" with the way his rise was going before it got derailed due to injuries and WWE being really stubborn at realizing his star power.

But surely, when Lesnar hands him the torch the fans will finally accept him as the face of WWE and he will be at the forefront of the next boom era of wrestling. Right?!

Nope. Unlike Reigns, Cena was initially accepted with open arms as the new face of the company. It took a little while for fans to turn on him. There was also a gradual though short build.

Reigns has been booed since the rocket was strapped to his back. Hell, when the fucking Rock couldn't get him cheered.

Cena was not accepted as THE face. He was accepted as a heel, the crowd turned him face and the moment the office backed him the crowd shit on him.

The crowd didn't start shitting on him until the summer after he won the title. I think the Jericho feud is when it started.

It's not like he was shit on immediate following his title win or even before it when he entered the program going into mania that year, unlike Reigns who was soundly rejected the night he won the rumble

Yeah the Jericho feud is usually where people consider as the tipping point for Cena's decade plus negative reactions. Within a year, he goes from heavy crowd favorite to someone despised as equal or even more than Triple H. Didn't help WWE stripped away everything that made crowds love him and stubbornly stuck with the cliched Super Cena booking for him.

While they gained a lot in the kids market, his era was a disaster for the WWE in a lot more areas and something they still haven't recovered from yet.

I feel like the Angle feud is where it really went south for Cena and his live fan reaction. I can't say he was a disaster though. He was almost never injured for long, he was a draw and merchandise magnet for the kiddies and he's still the man 13 years later. Unless they lost money financially banking on him.

I conceded over relying on him and failing to build stars near his level in that time span is a failure but that's not Cena's fault.

Emperor Smeat

He's a bit weird as a mega star in terms of his drawing power especially the longer his era lasted. WWE made a ton of money from him but he doesn't have the Hogan/Austin ability where all areas improve. If anything, the more WWE focused on him and catering to the kids market, the more everything else suffered or were seen as an active threat to his drawing power.

Even with the kids market, he's failed big time in producing WWE's future base since data has shown those fans don't stay around after a few years and the bulk quit watching wrestling. Similar to why he's good at popping the ratings for a week or two with his occasional appearances but doesn't have any real staying power as a top draw the longer he sticks around.

Agree on it not being his fault and all because WWE got way too compliant with him as their top star and developed some really terrible habits lasting to this day.

Cena is the face and will be for a while. I think the WWE is doing a pretty good job of making Reigns the face and Lesnar the heel during this run to Mania but unless something amazing happens at Mania I think Reigns will go back to being booed the night after Mania.

I saw somewhere dirtsheets say Rollins vs. reigns is his next feud after mania and that might be a good idea. Theres something distinctly dislikable about Rollins and that might carry on with some cheers for Reigns vs. Rollins.

Cena. Then Reigns. That is their choice.
