Has anyone seen the new trailer for Cobra Kai? It looks all kinds of awesome. I grew up watching The Karate Kid in the 80’s and so I’m pumped for this. Comes out May 2nd. This story is a continuation of the Karate Kid 34 years later. Johnny (the guy that got kicked in the face by Daniel in the first movie) is restarting Cobra Kai. Anyways, watch the trailer. So awesome. The series comes out on YouTube Red on May 2nd.

Saw this recently and initially thought it was a joke. Like, some Funny or Die fake trailer shit.

However, thinking back to how a few sources in recent history have painted Johnny as the *true* hero and Daniel was the actual antagonist despite the movie being about him (How I Met Your Mother and an episode of Cracked Afterhours spring to mind), it seems like some stars may have aligned with that premise in mind, and they're really going to run with this.

I'm actually kinda interested to see where this goes... but not interested enough to *pay* for YouTube. That'd just be stupid.

Danny growing up to be an asshole is kinda perfect. Nice spin compared to other franchise revivals.

Agreed. I hope that the powers-that-be don’t make Daniel too much of an asshole though. Long time fans of Karate Kid such as myself might be a little upset by this. I think Daniel being a tweeter would be more suitable......and would come across as being less disrespectful to Mr Miyagi’s influence and legacy.

Even better if he doesn't even realize he's the asshole now; to grow up to be exactly the type of douchebag he hated over time.

That actually would be pretty funny, lol. I don’t know....I think I’d be a little too sad if they went full blown heel with Daniel. Those life lessons that he learned from Miyagi during the 80’s were deep.

Fun fact; Miyagi never specifically trained Danny to be a 'good person', just a better fighter.

Unfortunately, you are incorrect my misguided friend.

His video was clearly in jest, but I do agree with you. Anyone who thinks Daniel actually was the bully, needs their head examined.

No surprise that Luigi sides with that bully Daniel Larusso. Spreading lies about that very educational video.

If Daniel was such a big bully, he wouldn’t have helped save Sato during that storm in Japan. What’s for dinner tonight? Your ass being served on a silver platter.

Poor argument. Being a twat is not an all or nothing prerogative. Daniels scum bag nature is only present when he is trying to steal another mans girl.

So being the Alpha Male makes you an asshole?

How do you explain that argument Mister Alpha Male?

Destor
04-20-2018, 12:05 AM
Danny is no alpha. Danny is a classic beta who wishes he could be an alpha. Nothing proves this more than the final blow: the crane kick. As everyone should well know kicks to the head are illegal in karate and thus daniel should have been DQd. Had he not used the illegal blow (which Johnny didnt defend against because ITS ILLEGAL) he would have lost and secured his beta status for all of eternity.

Instead he takes a short cut and proves he is an imitation alpha. Off brand knock off alpha.

Johnny is both an alpha AND class act tho and handed Daniel the trophy EVEN AFTER Daniel CHEATED.

Clearly he was stopping menace to society. Caused a 3 car collision moments earlier. Where are the police? Johnny and Co are heros. The town was at risk for poor policing of this hoodlum from new york.

I told a girl I knew karate to impress her. It must have been 1991/1992 and she called my bluff so I just kicked a wall at waist height a couple of times and fucked off.

I'm on episode four. William Zabka is fantastic in this show, really brilliant in keeping with the character we know and a gift in insight towards how his life panned out post crane kick.
I've gotten a membership just to see the whole series.

Kalyx was on the money re: non-pc dialogue. It's very, very funny. I would say the only flaws come from the by-the-numbers approach to Daniel's relationship with his daughter so far and her relationship with the clique at school.
A minor quibble but it's overdone and the mother being an idiot who gives dreadful advice in keeping with her social-climber status is painful to watch. It adds very little to the show. We get it - Daniel lost touch with his values when Miyagi died.

Miguel and Johnny are the draw for me. I know where it's going because I read it all but it's done extraordinarily well for the most part and whoever was tasked with keeping the canon-consistency has done phenomenally well.

A joy to watch.

Just watching this show will tell you how much The Karate Kid meant to you growing up. It's so seamless that I feel like all other revisitations of classic media should be forced by rule to watch Cobra Kai and take note of how they handled the Karate Kid Bible.

"In English we call them bananas"

That may be the best throwaway line in terms of racial comedy and character building that you can do.

Incredible.

I just finished the last episode.
The world building and detail in character growth is actually incredible. I was blown away and without a doubt this is one of the greatest continuations of an established story that has ever been filmed.

I shook my head and said "I love this show" at least twice per episode. It defies belief that a property which was so thoroughly discarded has become so brilliant.

This rivals Westworld for reinvention/continuation of an assumed era-relevant piece of nostalgia. In both cases the source material has been treated with real reverence and the resulting production has been mind-blowingly good.

I thought reading the plot would ruin this for me but I was wrapped up entirely by it. No synopsis will provide you the gags and references. For there are hundreds.

Tight tight show.

I think this may be the best show I saw all year.
