Buffy is getting the reboot treatment
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is returning to television in a reboot executive produced by franchise creator Joss Whedon (The Avengers).
20th Century Fox Television is reportedly developing the new take on Buffy, which will center on a younger version of the titular character portrayed by Sarah Michelle-Gellar on the ’97 series, now played by a black actor.
Writer Monica Owusu-Breen, who previously collaborated with Whedon on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., will write the reboot; Whedon is set to serve as executive producer on the project, in addition to working with Breen on the script.
Fox will reportedly pitch the new Buffy take to “streaming and cable outlets later this summer in a package bound to ignite a bidding war.”
Casting has not been set for the Buffy reboot. It will reportedly feature a “richly diverse” cast, and like the original series, boast metaphors for “issue facing society today.”

Buffy is my favoritest thing ever. I watch it roughly once a year. Not ok with tokenism for the sake of tokenism but...its buffy. Im on board.

They should go with a series where the the main character already is African American like The Vampire Huntress Legend Series

Literally just doing to be the most progressive progressive in the room. "Look how much i care about the disenfranchised." Joss trying to win thebliberals back after they turned on him for his writing of Black Widow in Avengers 2 and for cheating on his wife.
She'll be gay too.

Fuck this noise.
I can't wait until the episode where the new black buffy gets the cops called on her for trying to use a coupon in a store.

... played by Scarlett Johansen. After she finishes being the first black James Bond, of course.

Buffy should be a transwoman.

There should be a callback to the movie, though. Have Paul Reubens guest star in the first episode. Then, when Buffy stakes him, it takes him all season to finally die.

All female roles from here on out should be played by transwomen though, honestly.

Why do people get so worked up with characters being written as something other than white? I can't say I'm a huge fan of Buffy but I don't think her being white is a big part of her character.
It's only when you change a characters race from white to something else that people get upset. I mean, whether you believe in him or not, Jesus was from the middle east but we're totally cool with him consistently being portrayed as a white guy with blue eyes.

Change a minority to white and see what happens. The issue is consistency. Either it matters or it doesn't. Blavk L8hhtninh doesn't need to be black, either.

Racial appropriation is bad or it isnt. Take your pick.

There are always people who go on about casting choices when racial lines are crossed. Idris Elba touted as the new James Bond has become a running joke with rather unsavoury "not in my lifetime" connotations attached to it.
Look at the criticism about Natalie Portman in "Annihilation" playing a white version of an originally non white character.
People bring this shit up all the time. You don't have to adapt things 100% faithfully otherwise why did Placido Damingo get to play Othello in the 80's? People still accept him as the greatest of his generation and he was in blackface.
No matter the ethnicity of the person inheriting the role or the ethnicity in which the role originated, someone will bring it up in the media saying that it's not faithful to the source.
