I'm not even a big Godzilla mark and this looks sick. You know Kong has to show up at some point as well, too. Skull Island was one of the more surprisingly good movies I've seen in a while.
Just hope they don't overload this with the "Titans" to the point it becomes bloated.

Wonder if Braun Strowman is going to be in this film since he is a "Monster among men."
Maybe he cashes in his Monster in the Bank case to save the world in the end.

Looks alright. Thought the 2014 one was shit, and I don't feel like this is a franchise that can really take off these days. Just feels like this film will be another huge letdown.
And of course, we're all just waiting for King Kong to get involved, in another shameless attempt at studios cashing in on the whole shared-universe thing.
I'm still not sure how that will work. The King Kong they intro'd in this franchise while still considerably larger than past versions was still way, way shorter than Godzilla. Maybe he's grown taller since the 1970's. Also 'zilla appears to be the face in this film. Maybe he will turn heel on humanity in Godzilla vs Kong.

I feel the same about this as I feel about the current Planet of the Apes franchise: I'm not super amped about it, but it still looks like it's worth a watch. Then again, I'm a guy who is down for rubber suited purity. Godzilla just ain't Godzilla unless he's wrecking HO scale shop.

To be fair, I wasn't a superfan of the originals, either. But I like that the new one is more about how it came to be, and essentially is a full series of well-conceptualized prequels. They're flicks with their own story to tell and they aren't trying to make it hot new constant reboots or shoehorn in Go-Bots and Wheeled Warriors for some shared cinematic universe.

What's with the wtf smiley? We're clearly in agreement.
The franchise started strong, was never over marketed or hyped and every film has been better than the last. The second was great but the third is monumental. Woody Harrelson took the whole thing up a notch, he's in that glorious late-stage maturation of his craft where his 90's output almost seems like a dream within a dream and for the last while almost every role he takes adds something wonderful to the product.
I'm actually pretty sure Woody Harrelson will win an Oscar someday. I think he should have had one for 3 Billboards but I waited so long for Sam Rockwell to win one I daren't complain when he finally does.

I really loved the slow burn of 2014.
That said if you’re going to have a movie with a bunch of monsters then slow burn isn’t really the way to go. So I’m fine with this one being faster paced and more action packed.
Damian Rey 2.0
05-29-2019, 07:14 PM
As am I. Its a natural progression really. Also, given the director, and the complaints of the first from a lot of the fan base, it was easy to guess they were gonna go all out.
I think the way Kong was handled was perfect. We got a lot of him, but it wasn't overkill. We'll see how they handle the crossover film.

The more time I've had to think about it the more I've hated it. Every fight scene was obscured by useless humans doing nothing but running around. Not to mention every fight was covered in clouds, dust, smoke, rain, debris, etc.
Bummer as it turned out to be the turd I was afraid it was gonna be. And I've lost faith in how good Godzilla v Kong is going to be.
Fignuts
06-03-2019, 01:44 AM
I dunno man, I've seen that complaint, but I didn't really have trouble following the action. It would be cool to see a daylight fight, but I imagine a big part of the reason is that it's much easier to hide CGI looking too much like CGI with a night setting.
Plus, I think they make up for it by combining the monsters effects with the night setting to create some amazing visuals. A lot of those incredible shots wouldn't look as good in the day.
The main negative I had was that it's not paced very well. I never felt tired of the human element in 2014, because of the previously mentioned slow burn. It's not executed as well here, and a couple times I found myself thinking "alright already lets get back to the monsters".
That said there's still plenty of monster action. A lot more than 2014, and it's fucking rad. Loved all their scenes. Also really appreciated the easter eggs and attention to the lore of the original series.
Kyle Chandler's character was terrible. He just annoyed me the whole film. A lot of the dialogue is cringy to be honest. Like, it feels like dialogue from Godzilla 1998. Except for Ken Watanabe. His scenes are all great.
But the positives far outweighed the negatives for me.
So, looks like Godzilla will be fighting Kong until the end where they have to team up to fight Mecha Ghidora.

Why? Well because other than the pops the audience gave the fight scenes there was nothing enjoyable about the film to me except the beauty of Mothra which I loved. It was way too long of a movie and I hated the way they dealt with the Mother character and her babyface and heel turns. A real piece of shit movie that I felt regretful spending my time and money on.

Yeah, I'm a huge godzilla mark who's seen all 30+ movies, so take my positive review with a grain of salt.
I think one of the main failings of these new Godzilla movies is the human element. There's always a large human element in Godzilla movies. But in the Toho movies they have interesting characters at least. The last two western films have such bland, cookie cutter characters I couldn't even tell you their names.
To be fair, it's a lot easier to make the human element interesting when you've got zany out there plots involving aliens, time travel, or any of the other ridiculousness that made up the Toho film plots.
But Shin Godzilla showed you can do Godzilla with a plot more grounded in reality.
