Since the get-go, this film has not particularly interested me, and the trailer has done nothing to change that.

Opposite effect for me. I was pretty "meh, whatever" about everything, but now that trailer has me hype.

I'm interested to see how Phoenix does. Liked what I saw in the trailer and I'm typically a fan of his. Also want to see where they go with this. It looks interesting enough and far more intriguing than the Leto joker we got in suicide squad.
But it could be a total bomb and complete miss by the director and his team. Which would be a shame since Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Shazam have started to help right the ship for DC movies.
I thought the trailer was really well done. I'm on the fence because I cant tell where this movie is going. I doubt they make Joker out to be a sympathetic character. But the trailer shows a lot of that. I'm thinking there is a fuckton more to this movie and we're being a bit mislead. I could be wrong. I got a Rob Zombie ( directed movies ) type feel to this movie. A sick, dark dude. I think this movie might be really dark and i'm ok with it.

04-04-2019, 11:33 PM
I think they'll be some natural sympathy to his character if it's going the route I think it is. The Killing Joke is beloved, and it sympathized Joker's character. It didn't make the story any less effective.
We'll see. It's got people talking, and not in a "this looks shit" sort of way, so that's a good start.
After so man duds, lets hope DC are getting things right. Im not a fan of someone different playing the same character so close to someone else. I guess you grow up with 'your' version of the character and associate that one as the best.
Didn't like how Spiderman got re-booted....then rebooted again.

Looks meh to me. Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker was absolutely incredible, and a whole new level of acting. But otherwise, I've never really been massively into the character and always thought he was a bit overrated.
Frank Drebin
04-07-2019, 09:08 AM
Yeah, no one was gonna beat Jack Nicholson's Joker before Dark Knight came out either.
Different portrayals. Ledger's Joker wasn't the kind that would bust into a room dancing to "Party Man". Doesn't mean one was better than the other.

Joker-9/10
I got what I expected and more. This movie does not try to promote, glorify or justify a triggered individual with mental health issues going over the edge. It is a dark, grim, hopeless and brutal 2 hour film about a man with a start to life so tragic, you realize he never had any real chance to be more than what he is.
The opening scene sets the tone for the film, and it's unforgiving from there. The first time we see Arthur jumped, you do feel a sense of pity for him. He's clearly mentally challenged and not an inherently bad man. When Arthur gets a taste of his first kill, you can see the gears in his head start to wind. The character goes from being pitiful and, to a point, sympathetic, to a slow decent into madness after seeing that his first murder is what makes him feel noticed.
The descent into madness is not immediate however. He does not go on some murderous spree immediately after. Instead, the film takes its time, setting up several series of events that both are a revelation to the viewer and to Arthur himself, the final one being the tipping point.
Arthur learns of true past. At least as true as the film would allow, and that, as the 3rd act begins, is the final step in Arthur embracing and becoming the Joker. He becomes unhinged, but calculating. His actions are not without merit, from his pov, and they are not senseless in that the kills relate to the story that came before them.
In the end, I walked out having enjoyed the movie. But it is not a fun movie. It is a contrast to the Dark Knight, where a hero sacrifices himself to take the fall for the betterment of his city, and in doing so, instills hope in the future of Gotham. Joker instead only promises a bleak, grim era of the city that, given the theme of the oppressed uprising, is only going to get worse.
Joaquin Phoenix is magnetic. Like any small scale Phoenix film, he's virtually in every single scene, and he owns every frame. The character's progression to several bad days, feeling depressed and hopeless, to embracing and relishing in the Joker persona, is top notch work from him. I would hope he gets an Oscar nod.

The best ones are the ones that basically say you can replace Joaquin Phoenix with Donald Trump
“At the end of the movie, a triumphant Fleck — seemingly dead, but magically revived by the cheers of a throng of clown-masked rioters — does a grotesque soft-shoe on top of a shattered cop car, literally dancing on the destroyed remains of the rule of law,” Yang concludes. “Imagine Fleck as Trump, shrugging off impeachment, rebounding with his roaring red-hatted supporters, winning reelection against every prediction and probability.”

Like does he go on the talk show and stuff in the comic books?
Damian Rey 2.0
10-09-2019, 02:02 AM
There are references yes. His revelation about where he really comes from is a nod in that the Joker has always been an enigma. The failed comedian bit is straight outta The Killing Joke. And in The Dark Knight Returns, he does go on a tv show posing as a reformed version of himself before, if I recall correctly, gassing the audience.
But like the Nolan films, the movie is its own thing. Takes some nods to the source material but an original take on it.

What about thinking Thomas Wayne was his dad? Is that "canon"
And also Thomas Wayne's death... don't remember if he was just killed by random "hooligans" or if Joker's "henchmen" had anything to do with it in other versions

The Waynes are killed for different reasons in each film series. Thomas wasn't hinted at being Joker's dad in any storyline that I know of.
God, Thomas Wayne was suchan asshole in this movie. There's literally one likeable character, and it's a pre teen boy who gets to watch his parents die. Again.

I liked it. Mostly was really enjoyable but some parts felt corny 2 me, like when he was talking on the talk show and was all "I'm a mentally ill loner,,," and when all the clown mask guys were cheering and stuff around him at the end
nvm just realized the end with the clown mask guys was another hallucination...
Movie was really cool upon reflecting on it today! Feel like watching it again

I don't think that ending was a hallucination at all.

Hmmm I guess it is ambiguous
I'm basing that on him being in the insane asylum in the next scene... if he was really freed by the clowns somehow, how'd he end up there? I guess he got arrested later? Why cut to that scene immediately?
But I guess if I think that, that also calls a bunch of other stuff into question, like if he actually appeared on the talk show, etc.
Maybe that stuff happened, but it was being told from his "warped perspective," making him come off as a "hero"
Just feel like the "cheering disciples" thing at the end didn't feel consistent with the "realistic" feeling of the rest of the movie, but did feel similar to the other scenes that were in his head, where he's cool and confident and people love him
This might help

Finally got around to seeing it tonight. I liked it....it's super dark, and I like how they tied Joker and Batman down the road somewhere coming to blows. It was a good performance by Phoenix and he definitely deserves an Oscar nod.

Marketing is likely betwee 20 and 35 mil. So if its high end they won't hit profits until Saturday next week. If its low end theyll see profits on sunday
Was just a tad off here. Marketing was 120 million (lol wut?) but it clearly paid off (pun intended) as Joker is set to have higher profit margins than infinity war when its all said and done.

It's also taking the top box office spot back after getting bumped last week.
