They neutered a masterpiece when they remade "Let The Right One In" as a teeny bopper flick and had the balls to alter the double meaning of the title.
Unforgivable.

I didn't mind it so much at first and then I rewatched "Let The Right One In" which is as polished a gothic romance as there will ever be in this century.

I'm still mad about it.

Apparently it's going to focus more on the investigative part of the Batman M.O

So that sounds cool. I want to see gadgets and sleuthing punctuated by brief and effective vigilantism.
Make it more Man From Uncle than Winter Soldier though, a bit of a Mission Impossible style would be nice.

Take it back to the 60's and 70's.

I hope I'm wrong and I usually like to keep an open mind about things, but I don't think that this is going to be very successful. Following in the footsteps of the Dark Knight trilogies is going to be an extremely tall order, and I just can't see Pattinson being able to take the torch from Christian Bale.

Pattinson is a good actor no doubt, but I can't see him being able to duplicate Christian Bale's success. If it was up to me, the entire Batman franchise would be put to rest for the next 20-25 years. The Dark Knight trilogies was so epic, that you can't just make a new Batman a few short years later.

Bale's Batman was great because of team behind it, not just because of Bale. Reeves is an accomplished director and seems to have a very firm idea of what he wants to do with the character. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and see where he goes with it.

mitchables

hell yeah, i would show the hell up for freeze (esp tragic/serious freeze) and/or man-bat. they both have the potential to be awesome.

tbh though other than freeze - or maybe a well-done poison ivy - i'd prefer it if they went for a villain we haven't seen already, especially one, in catwoman's case, we've already seen twice in two film series

professor pyg would be pretty cool if they're wanting to highlight batman's 'detective' side, though he might not yet be established enough outside of the comics

new 52-era dollmaker would work for similar reasons as pyg, though he appeared in both arrow and gotham

black mask would've been good too, if he wasn't tied up in birds of prey (which, side note, i really hope does not suck)

penguin would be ok but honestly after five seasons of gotham i don't feel like the character needs it; same for riddler. cobblepot and nygma were the breakout villains of that show and imo they feel pretty well represented on-screen as a result, even if neither has been in a film for 20+ years

other villains i would be down for:

- clayface
- court of owls
- hugo strange (they might avoid this purely for the 'dr strange' connection though)
- lady shiva

Very interesting ideas and thoughts being posted in this thread and I commend those posters for their contributions. I think this is one of those things where I'll have to "see it to believe it" so to speak. The Dark Knight trilogies is just so legendary that any attempt to duplicate it or come up with a new twist to the Batman series will likely just fall flat in my opinion.

The same could have been said for Spider-Man and Marvel did a great job creating a different take on the title character that's different but every bit as good as the Raimi version.

It's not going to duplicate TDK films. And it's been 7 years since Rises came out and it'll be closer to 10 years once this film hits. I think that's more than enough time.

He's already Batman when the movie begins. Just a 'still-learning' Batman. Test screenings for this one have been very, very good (allegedly).

I've followed some insiders/leaks about this movie that have me very interested in it...If 'The Dark Knight' was Batman as 'Heat' it sounds like this is Batman as 'Chinatown meets Seven/Saw'...very curious to see how they get the rating to PG-13, which they'll definitely do, there are Lego sets and toy sets incoming for it.

Some possible tidbits about the film, minus any real spoilers, but I'll still put a spoiler tag up

* He is in the Batman costume most of the film, Bruce is more of a rare appearance
* In tune with the 'detective' aspect of Batman in the comics
* It is very much a Noir/Horror film vibe
* Robert Pattinson does a lot of voice-over narration for dialogue 'in his head' (fits the Noir aspect)
* The most violent/brutal Bat film supposedly, on both the giving and receiving end for Bats
* Paul Dano allegedly most memorable Bat villain since Heath Ledger
* Seems inspired by Bat comics The Long Halloween, Batman: Zero Year and this one I'll put in spoiler tag within a spoiler tag, because if it is true, it's definitely a spoiler

The Court of Owls

since you clicked spoiler within a spoiler the aspect of Batman: Zero Year rumored to be central to the plot involves Riddler flooding Gotham City and leaving it a wasteland

The body armor looking like straight up vibranium is a bit much, I rather he dodges bullets. Did look badass with him just tanking full auto fire. The fact that they are hiding a lot about Riddler probably means he's gonna be memorable. Hate the car. Catwoman's hot but I don't think that casting ever failed to have a hot Catwoman.

I get being burned out on Batman. We never really got a break. BvS was right after TDK trilogy ended. Then we get the Batman announced. Then Affleck is back for the Snyder cut, plus the Flash film with Affleck and Keaton. It’s a lot of Batman in the last decade.

Yeah, I mean I haven’t really thought of him and Kristen Stewart as shackled by any sort of “Twilight” association. If anything it helps prove their worth, they are exceeding the expectations of those who saw them in it because they are a lot more talented than that genre, material and direction was ever going to display.

There’s nothing in Matt Reeves’ filmography that suggests he’s going to do anything stupid, absurd or unserious with this movie.

I watched his Let Me In remake recently and if that’s the vibe they’re going for, and it feels like it, this movie is going to be just fine. The dynamic between a playful Catwoman and serious Batman seems on point and I trust Reeves as a filmmaker.

Going off on a DAMN iNATOR style side story here. The best time I ever had a theatre was going to see the second Twilight movie. I forget the name of it. Unimportant. My wife dragged me to it when her bestie had to back out due to an emergency and she didn't want to waste the ticket. Whatever, Twilight blows but I can take a couple hours of Hell for the misses no sweat.

The theatre is wall to wall super hyped up girls of all ages. I scan the area and see a handful of other poor souls who seem to be in this predicament with me. I nod to them, signaling that we will persevere. They raise their fists in solidarity. (OK that part didn't happen but pretend it did for dramatic effect.) Fast forward to like half way through this awful picture and there is a scene where Jacob is wearing the most Central Floridian pair of jorts you have ever laid eyes upon...and then he takes off his shirt. Every single girl in there from ages 6-80 all simultaneously burst out in an embarrassing cacophony of "oooooohs" and "aaaaaaaahs" and I swear I heard someone say "He's so dreamy." Gag. But then it happened, the best thing that ever happened at the theatre. One of my similarly miserable brothers sitting somewhere behind me in this sea of gaggling geese saw Jacob take his shirt off and he saw his opportunity. As all the ladies swooned, this man casually stands up, clears his throat and exclaims to the Heavens "NICE SHORTS FAG!!"

Chaos commenced. All manners of snackery and liquid refreshments were hurled his way from those nearby as the entire theatre erupted into a deafing boo. He grinned, unwavering, unflinching and took his comeuppance in stride. I looked back at this champion of justice with a smile on my face. This man had saved the day and salvaged an otherwise torturous experience for the few of us stalwart warriors who had dared to brave the hall of velour seating. His bravery and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

I have the same feeling about Pattinson that I did about Bale. And Bale turned out to be fantastic.

I think this movie will be great. I imagine there will be changes to the Riddler character as we know it. I think the long run time actually points towards this being really really good.

I think they havent showed the Riddler because the big reveal is that he isnt in a mask as we all remember from comics and the animated series. I think he's going to be deformed some how. Maybe something to do with Batman. I think they're losing the mask for Riddler. Which I honestly would not mind. It's modern. It makes sense.

It’s already been reported he’s a minor character. He won’t be s as one scene wonder though. The trailers alone have him alone in his suite, he’s at whatever funeral Bruce, Selina and Carmine are at, plus the two scenes we know he’s in with Batman where Batman beats up his goons and the car chase.

He’s also getting an HBO max series. So we’ll get more of him.

And I’m ok with them saving him as a side/reoccurring character.

Reeves stated in an interview that he thinks there’s a very grounded and interesting way to bring Mr. Freeze to film, while Pattinson wants Court of Owls and Calendar Man. Court of Owls certainty fits into the detective/secrets of Gotham uncovered vibes. Though Idk how they handle the zombie assassin thing.

one thing i find particularly interesting is the film has nothing to offer children. it plays out well for me a an individual but its an odd thought to have a batman film that isnt remotely marketable to a younger audience. from the pacing to the general plot structure and the light horror elements besides this film has nearly no chance in appealing, let alone holding the attention of, a young boy audience.

The next big studio movie i believe is Morbius and that’s another month out. So far the Batman is tracking to be really popular with general audiences, which is what counts, and it’s got that audience all to itself for a few more weekends.

My wife, who isn’t into superhero movies and refused to watch the Nolan trilogy, loved this movie. Namely because it’s a police procedural style story being worked by a guy in a bat suit. But the unraveling narrative and Batman detecting is what sucked her in. I’ve heard the same from other non fanatic moviegoers that I’m close with.

The movie is pg13 in the states, so it won’t have trouble getting those younger audiences in. Not sure where you’re at country wise but in the US the rating won’t hinder it. Only constant complaint I see is it’s not humorous at all and it’s a very serious, time heavy film, which is a huge left turn for audiences thinking they’re getting a fun marvel style movie.

Then again, Joker was really bleak and it made a killing. No pun intended.

Second viewing got an ovation at the end. Theater was packed.

While I agree work you Destor about the opening not being as big as it could, we have to remember that this movie is a reboot and the last two films with Batman were turds, Pattinson doesn’t have the mainstream following he likely will after this movie and is still shaking off twilight dust from the average moviegoer.

I think it’ll have a strong second weekend and hold its own through the middle of next month when it goes to HBO max, where it’ll likely get numbers.

i dont blame the film. the dc brand is weak and the lead is trying to win over a demo that actively hates him. im certain though this will be like pirates of the Caribbean. the 1st film didnt sell tickets. it was a hit at home. when the 2nd film dropped everyone who passed on the original turned out in droves. i think this incarnation has a future. but...opening weekend...still under on recouping production costs never mind marketing...yeah its not great. in 2 year though public perception will have shifted on this. bump this thread and quote me.

Guess I'll add my Two Cents...

Depp as The Riddler
I would like to see Depp as The Riddler based solely on the fact that he is a damn fine actor and I like to watch damn fine actors at work. Perhaps he could be somebody drafted in by the police to help them find Batman, during the investigation "Ed Nigma" (I wouldn't use that name) discovers that Batman is in fact Bruce Wayne but rather than telling the police he keeps this information to himself and he becomes The Riddler and begins to torment Wayne/Batman (insert personal reason as to why he would do that into the plot).

The Joker Returns
With the rise of The Riddler in effect and his targeting of Wayne/Batman starting to effect the city at large the police turn to someone they believe can understand The Riddler's mind. Through Harley Quinn (Britany Murphy is a good fit for the role and could also provide the 'love interest' for Bruce) we have a 'Silence of the Lambs' setup between her and The Joker, played by....

Johnny Depp (hear me out).

I'd have him filmed from behind/shoot from his perspective so that you would never see his face (Depp would do his best to nail Ledger's take on the voice). I think there'd be an excellent duality in having both characters played by the same guy - as long as it was someone like Depp.

**An alternative is to use the 'Silence of the Lambs' scenario to twist "Ed Nigma" from police helper to the character he would become. "Ed Nigma" would use The Joker to try and 'get inside the mind of Batman' as Joker seems to understand what drives and motivates Batman. During these meetings Joker can subtley turn "Ed" into The Riddler.**

Penguin
An idea for Penguin would be to have him reform the Mob before becoming Mayor of Gotham. The people of Gotham are willing to vote anybody into power that they feel can stop the vigilante known as Batman. This comes as a knee jerk reaction tothe events of The Dark Knight (i.e. Batman "killing" Dent).

This however is a little too close to Batman Returns for my liking so an alternative would be to mix the two scenarios above and have The Riddler become Mayor - seeking Batman as the powerful Mayor "Nigma" as well as tormenting Bruce Wayne as The Riddler. Just for kicks of course.

Other Villains
I'm not too keen on Catwoman, Bane or a returning Ras BUT I can see how they could be done. Clayface should be steered completely away from - unless he's just a guy suffering from a disfigurative facial disease (akin to the Elephant Man) that somehow has some power in the Mob or something. I dunno, not really interested tbh.

This is where I lose you all...

Robin
At first I thought the idea of "The Boy Wonder" appearing in the Nolan created Batman Universe was a big no-no but now I've come to like the idea. However, there would need to be some major changes...

- I would at no point use the name Robin (unless it just so happened to be the characters middle name that could be referenced as a little injoke towards the end of the film).

- I'd also drop the circus background that we've seen before. Far too campy.

- He wouldn't be Batman's sidekick and wouldn't get a costume.

Batman would use "Robin" as a go between so that he could still communicate with Commissioner Gordon without risking Gordan's position. I'd have the character be some kinda streetwise teenager who at some point sees Batman save someone from a mugger (or something similar) thus learning that Batman is not the bad guy he's being made out to be.

Now comes the single reason I'd have "Robin" in the film: his method of getting around the city...parkour (freerunning). I think a chase secene with him running across rooftops, flipping, rolling, diving from ledge to ledge, etc would be kinda cool. Even have the chase be against Batman.

Anyways, there's my take on a few things. Feel free to rip it apart. Or better yet try to tie together the loose strands that I've left.

This was a post I made in 2008 about where the Nolan movies could go after TDK. Think there’s a few common threads there. Also completely missed on how close I was with the Robin as another name with an “in joke towards the end of the movie”.

Really think we need to put the Joker on ice for a decade.

They could do MORE, for sure.

Court of Owls seems like it'd be PERFECT for the current atmosphere.

Red Hood and/or Arkham Knight (but Red Hood really).

Court of Owls would be a great choice for a movie IMO.

I would love court if owls. No man’s land also seems like an easy set up given the ending of this one.

Just saw this on hbo max. Excellent film.ove that we finally have a batman movie that emphasizes his detective skills.

Also, I agree with others that Court of Owls would fit fantastically with the tone and atmosphere that this film set in place.

Feel like the inclusion of The Joker was a studio decision, like you can’t have a Batman movie without at least a hint of him.

I don’t think so. Reeves was ready to walk away when he felt the studio was going to mandate what was to be in the movie. I have zero doubts it was all his idea. He mentioned using joker like a Hannibal Lecter type. I could see that role growing in the next film, leading to his escape and being the main villain in the 3rd film.

Given they’re hinting at No Man’s Land with that ending, I could see Joker escaping at the end of the next one and being the primary villain for the 3rd.

we def shouldnt be thinking about 3 just yet. 2 will have to perform for that to happen.

Fair. Nonetheless I’d like to see more different villains in the next one. Arkham City Mets No Man’s Land, with the Court of Owls pulling the strings, please.

I liked it but it would have made a better mini-series. It had mini-series written all over it.

My biggest gripe is how shit the riddles were.

Bad riddles.

The Riddler now an ironic name like “Little John”.

People laugh at Calendar Man...... but it could be a cerebral thriller. He was good in "The Long Halloween". They could keep him in that mindset and it'd be decent, if we wanna go with "joke" villains.

Ditto... been saying I should rewatch it since it came out on Crave but it is like "ugh, 3 hours... that's a commitment".... and if I was going to commit that much time to a Batman movie it would probably be for one of the more fun Nolan movies...

The more distance I put between myself and this movie the more I think it is just "ok". Matt Reeves is a weird entity... like I really liked his Apes movies and this movie when I saw them for the first time, but then after the fact I feel like zero motivation to watch them again even though I know they are "good".

I’d bet on more. But still the movie is popular and Pattinson was praised in the title role, which I think was their biggest hurdle.
