This is what's wrong with wrestling. You base it off of reading results ( or lack thereof because I've not seen one site bash what happened) and watching 10 minutes of it (you probably watched what happened before the Dustin/Cody match with Cody destroying the throne).
Sit through the entire PPV and if you feel the same way, then it is what it is. But making a comment that you watched a little and it's above TNA and below WWE is so incredibly short-sighted.
I think you are right. I will give you that, and I do want to watch it.
Even with all that you said, I still think that they are in reaction to WWE..they don't have to be.

I can say this... The Casino Battle Royal came off a little indieriffic. It wasn't a revolution for the match. There were some spots where the camera didn't know who to focus on because Joey Janella can't work and doesn't understand how to play to a camera and that he's not the only guy in the match. I kind of enjoy Joey especially in GCW or one of his shows but he isn't very good lets be honest. Also he looked like shit. I couldn't compare him to Adam Page, Page is far beyond Janella.
I have seen 3 Battle Royals live this year and at least double that from other promotions... I'm just done with them. Please no more Battle Royals for a long time.
Also, Alex Marvez is just okay, but it is early for that team so they could get better. Excalibur and JR were a revolution. I wish they could just cut out Alex. But to be honest, he had his moments where I saw his value. For instance, he knows what the fuck he's talking about and that is super important. He just needs to control his nerves.

I will say, and maybe I'm in the minority here, but I didn't care much for the commentary team. JR doesn't have the same fire or stamina he used to. And Excalibur seems good at explaining the moves, but doesn't seem good at story telling. I dunno, they were whatever to me.
But fuck me that show was still amazing.

Unfortunately i think it's the age we now live in. Thumbs up or down based on reviews and 30 second clips that doesn't give you any feeling which is very very important. Otherwise it's just flippyshit

I couldn’t watch it either, because I just couldn’t justify spending that much where I live for a stream that might not even hold up on dodgy internet.
I am delighted for them and for wrestling because WWE is terrible and Vince is sabotaging his own shows by being Vince. Wrestling needs this.
But the very fact they were having this show was a victory over them. Guys expressing themselves and the quality of the build of Dustin/Cody was already a big enough jab at WWE.
There was no need to be so cheesy and on the nose with the throne. They got in so many statements last night from what I have seen without needing to be so direct. The show spoke for itself and was a massive criticism of WWE in itself.
No need to be petty and reactionary with the throne bit

Genuinely makes me so sad watching Dustin at his age doing what he did last night. So many guys have had so many years wasted in the WWE grind.
Goldust character was so good, imagine what he could have been doing for the last 10 years with stories and direction as he got older. A great character and performer could have told some amazing stories and, like so many others, a massive portion of his career has been wasted doing nothing important every week.

Obviously didn't get to watch but it seems like I too missed a really good show. Hopefully the price point comes down a bit. I'll spend 30 on the occasional PPV but not more than that and I don't care if it's a PPV of God vs Satan for control of mankind.
That being said, I have watched a bit of it now via internet videos (Prob like a third of the total show) and I was bugged by a couple things:
I didn't like the throne spot either. It's too early to be taking shots. They should have risen above that and just ran their show. If WWE starts taking more liberal shots at them, then they can start responding. I just didn't like the feel of it being done this early on in the promotion. If they end up failing for whatever reason it will be an ironic moment to look back at.
And sticking with my argument from a couple days ago....I don't like Jericho going over....and having that be the place where Moxley debuted made it even worse for me. You have a WWE legend and first undisputed champion going over "The Guy" in your company in a match being announced by WWE's most prolific announcer and then you have a post match beat down from a former WWE champion.....all while trying to present yourself as an alternative to WWE. I. Don't. Get. It.
Other than those things though I was impressed and entertained by what I did watch. Gonna watch more of it as I find it over the next couple days. So far I am very optimistic about AEW's chances at making it and becoming a viable competitor to WWE. That's still a couple years off at least in the states but I think they can quickly make inroads and challenge WWE in the foreign market much much quicker than that, especially with that British TV deal.
Watched the JEricho match on youtube.
Do they not have belts yet? I read it was a title match.
It wasn't a title match, the winner will be in the first title match
Yes, they have a World Title, Bret Hart introduced the belt last night (looks good)

It threw me off that somebody under WWE contract would be at AEW, but then I remembered he was covering for Busted Open.
The next day still thinking about many of the + things that came out of this show. A really good ppv overall. The show was fun, enjoyable, unpredictable and nothing felt forced. Some great stuff, some stuff to improve on.

Can’t wait for WWE to counter this with a barnburner Lashley/Corbin tag match on Raw
Ha, this popped me. But seriously, it will be Rollins/Reigns vs. Lashley/Corbin. Get real.
Apparently Dustin went into last night assuming it was his retirement match and he planned on leaving his boots in the ring after. Cody's comments after the match and invitation to face the Bucks were a surprise to him.
You could tell. Genuine emotion came out of both men.
I didn't feel any TNA from AEW... The references at the beginning made me laugh, the throne breaking works only if you watched Game of Thrones.
Not a Game of Thrones fan, I thought the throne-breaking was awesome. They are living off being the other right now. Cody’s gimmick is that he is the EVP from a royal wrestling family. AEW is different. That was the point. And it worked in front of that crowd. When you see Triple H take four minutes to get to the ring at Super Showdown or Mania next year, you can remember that moment as a relevant critique of why we need new in wrestling.
I hear the point, and it would have been nice if wrestling was wrestling over the past twenty years or whatever. But Dustin had a lot pent up. Having something to prove probably pushed him a little bit.

One thing I do think it clear is that the rumors that PAC was scheduled to go over Hangman were bullshit.
I figured it would be PAC/Hangman and Omega/Jericho to decide the inaugural title match. PAC and Omega would've won, and the problem then was they wanted Omega to be the first champ but DG wanting PAC to hold the belt longer meant PAC couldn't lose a singles match in the next few months. It's whatever, I get it. PAC wants to do the right thing by his promotion and he wants the next singles match he loses to be for the title to put someone at DG over. He's demanded time limit draws against ZSJ and Ospreay for the same reasons.
But then Jericho beat Omega and that throws the whole theory out the window. They weren't doing a PAC/Jericho heel vs. heel title match, and they weren't about to abort Omega as the first champ if that was the plan.
So I think Hangman/Jericho was always their plan and they just simply didn't account for the fact that they were going to be asking another promotion's champion to do a clean job for nothing in return.
I appreciate that they want to avoid politics, but it's wrestling. If you don't play politics, politics will eventually play you.

I didn’t like ECW nostalgia a decade after it closed, let alone two. That said, I didn’t mind Dreamer’s involvement. By all accounts he's a really nice guy and very interview I’ve ever heard from the guy makes it clear he really loves wrestling and always has.
I understand why every Dreamer appearance gets labeled as ECW nostalgia given how synonymous he was with that brand, but I try to think of it more about rewarding a good guy with a boundless passion for the industry than it is trying to remember a long-dead company.

Of course AEW needs it's own champions. I'm hoping they come up with something innovative for a secondary title like when the X Division first came around.

Are you joking??? What AEW hate is in ANY of these posts.
The only thing I hate about AEW is how you can't say anything negative about anything or anybody that has any association with that company without a bunch of backlash that I am "just an AEW hater" and blah blah.
If I hated them so much why the fuck would I support them with $50 for a PPV.

So what exactly is the difference other than who they work for?
Because a bitter old man opened his mouth about his former employer, and yes we all know he is talking about WWE, but he didn't have the balls to say WWE, don't want to burn that bridge in case of a future potential payday, instead he made a generalized statement about all of pro wrestling. All of pro wrestling would then would include AEW. Since he made it about all of pro wrestling, then he is a hypocrite for acting like this one new title matters.
It's exactly why actual fans don't want AEW or any of their people going out of the way to bring up any other wrestling company.
It's the same way ill think it will suck if Moxley comes out and cuts the same promo about WWE evil, WWE held me down, etc that every former WWE guys cut as soon as they got to Impact.
If this time is supposed to be different, don't have your announcers out there bringing up WWE because they have an axe to grind. Just be AEW.

If this time is supposed to be different, don't have your announcers out there bringing up WWE because they have an axe to grind. Just be AEW.
They have the pieces, they have the talent, they can succeed without ever acknowledging WWE even exists. And it's exactly what they should do.
There’s a difference between genuine critique and hating on something out of spite. Your posts in this thread come off like the latter. Since you paid for the event and everything I’ll assume it’s unintentional, but your tone is why you’re getting so much pushback. Plenty of people have criticized AEW for different reasons.
And on Jim Ross, if you want to nail him to the cross just for not being specific then go ahead I guess but no one else gives a fuck.
Just finished the pre show. Good shit. Time for the PPV...I know the results already but it's still entertaining.

I thought she did a pretty good job of looking between the two. She kind of looked serious about it, but then was like "Okay, this could be fun..."
Confused by SCU and their gimmick
From what I can gather, they kind of do an Elias thing where they go for the cheap heat, except because fans are "smart" these days, they love it when they get insulted. So they are babyfaces. Kind of like Elias was for a few weeks there, except they changed everything about him that was working to the degree that it was.
I liked the opening six-man, but something about the group just doesn't "click" for me. I don't know what it is. Maybe I just think Daniels is so good that he deserves more? Or maybe I've just got it in my head that Daniels & Kazarian are such a great tag team, but adding a third man is just adding a third man (not a knock on Sky) in order to form a lesser tag team?
God it felt so good to hear JR say the word wrestling last night
My favorite jab he took was when he said that they could actually use the referees' names.

For what it’s worth, SCU are a stable but they don’t always work as a trio. It’s not unusual a Indy shows for two of them to work a tag while the other does a solo match. That’s what happened at All In with Kazarian and Sky teaming on the pre-show while Daniels faced Stephen Amell.
Will be interested in seeing how they’re booked.

AOC sharing that is pretty pinnacle of what AEW is trying to do by making themselves a far more progressive company than WWE, and a good example of how their phony bullshit and accepting that Saudi deal might be something they regret when it comes to appealing culturally later on.
Wrestling has a "dirty" rep. Being perceived as being on the right side of history is a good step to making them appealing to a wider array of fans, advertisers, networks, merchandisers, etc. Helps them get over as a babyface company.

Going to assume that happens once they have weekly tv since they are still in the proving phase with TNT and wrestling fans. Maybe shorter PPVs also mean lower PPV prices since less hour blocks they need to purchase from cable providers.

I just realized: I probably would have enjoyed the earlier things at Double or Nothing if I had watched them with other fans. Meltzer said that AEW Double or Nothing was #2 on Google trends, for whatever that is worth. He suggests that this is much better than what All In got by about four times, so he's expecting AEW to do about as well as WWE's PPVs outside of their major ones like Mania, SummerSlam and the Rumble.
It will certainly be interesting to see the number.

Cody/Dustin was good, but they could have had an equally good match and told an equally good story without all the blood. One change WWE made for the better was stopping to do things like that.

They were loud for pretty much everything. Also liked that they put the title beltsegment wth Bret, Page and MJF in after the Cody match to give the audience a chance to breath, as opposed to WWE's approach of getting the crowd up then bringing them back down, then up, then down, etc.
Also, I loved MJF. Hadn't seen him ever before that promo. But I thought he came like a shit bag heel and loved what I saw.

Knew that the Bucks were going to win bc Penta was already posting about them vs. the Bucks again at Verano de Escandalo (basically AAA's SummerSlam) before DoN even happened. I expect Penta and Fenix will win the belts there and that will be the end of it.
Really hate the Young Bucks style of "we just do dumb flippy shit for the sake of dumb flippy shit." I get that they are supposed to be like video game CAWs or something, but it's dumb to me.
Feel like it's a disservice to both Penta and Fenix to have them as a tag team instead of having 2 separate main event talents, but they seem to be more comfortable as a team, so okay.
I fully believe that they have had like 20 5 star matches against each other that only their family was present for. The company that figures out that they should split and have a real main event feud is going to print money, IMO. Fenix is a natural face and probably the second coming of Rey Mysterio, and Penta has an insane amount of charisma and knows how to tell stories without any words that an American audience would understand.
Also, all of you that act like WWE using the word Lucha means they invented it are definitely dumb as fuck. Thanks for listening.

It works way better as a side attraction than something done every week which is why it would never really work in a place like WWE but could in NXT due to how they book shows.

I saw a different match of his from Wrestle Circus, and I seen that he was decent in the last 20 seconds of a 7 minute match. And I like the idea of him wearing a shirt of himself wearing the shirt he's wearing. I thought that was clever. But the nonchalant aspect is what pisses me off.

The match he had with David Starr last year for Beyond Wrestling usually gets brought up the most when it comes to showcasing his actual skills as a wrestler. 1st 5 minutes or so is him in his comedy role and then starts showing off more of his real skills and being really effective in the underdog role.

The 6-man tag match he had at WrestleCon's Memorial show in April was a lot more heavy in his comedy gimmick but shined the most when Christopher Daniels went along with the act.

Also, all of you that act like WWE using the word Lucha means they invented it are definitely dumb as fuck. Thanks for listening.
Jesus Christ people are fucking dense. No one is saying that. It's just fucking stupid to assert that Lucha House Party only exists because of the "success" of a fucking failed promotion like Lucha Underground. Fuck you and fuck off.
That's his gimmick though. I like it but he'll have to switch it up or else it will get old after he does it a few times.
That's a shit gimmick.

Nah, he's not effective at all, because I'm not going to watch something that defeats its own purpose.

Starr kicked out of a Canadian Destroyer and Cassidy kicked out of a Burning Lariat. :|
It was alright for modern indy wrestling, I guess. But fuck both of them.

Lol @ Ambrose and Omega. Either Dean does the job right out of the gate, or AEW books Omega to lose 2 in a row. It will be a fun match but they better be careful with wins and losses mattering.
or they can slowly build to a match between the 2 where they both get wins and you can stop being a fucking idiot.
Pretty sure Ambrose's first AEW match is against Janela, which will surely be a win to build him up. Funny how you immediately decided they'd blow their wad on Mox vs Omega since you're busy being a smarmy know-it-all.

Do we have the buys for this show yet?

Probably not for a couple more weeks. Not even Tony Khan knows at the moment.
Observer's Dave Meltzer speculated that its likely higher than what All In did for buys and possibly even higher than UFC's last event when combining traditional PPV and streaming buys. His speculation was based on having the numbers from stream buys and using what Forbes did with Google trends to come up with an estimated guess for the overall amount.

I don’t think the Google trends are necessarily going to equate to buys. It will no doubt do better than All In.

Think the idea with using it for estimates is that a sizeable percentage is going to be from people who ordered the event or are very likely ordering it. Same with using social media trends and activity to help with the guessing.
Even something like 10% of searches being from people who bought the event would give around 20k as an estimate for buys going by Google trends alone.

People are saying it did around 98K buys
98k is pretty great honestly
Would make it the highest buyrate for a non-wwe/non-wcw wrestling ppv ever

It’s better than anything TNA did, but closer to that than a B-tier WWE PPV prior to the Network. It’s a long way from being out of the niche. TV is going to give them a better shot. I imagine the show was profitable, which is a good start.

Great show! I'm not entirely into the indy scene these days, so I'm not completely familiar with everyone, but everything about this show was just a huge breath of fresh air over WWE's product.
There was a very "real" feeling to the whole night, which has long since been lost on WWE's "entertainment" style of repetitive matches, scripted promos, commentating that is more concerned about promoting products and catchphrases. Every match seemed important, especially thanks to Jim Ross, and it's kinda cool seeing the "older audience", rather than kids in brightly coloured t-shirts.
It wasn't the best PPV ever or anything like that, but in 2019 this is exactly what wrestling (especially in the West) needs. As unlikely as it seems, Jon Moxley could be to AEW what Steve Austin was to the WWF in 1996.

According to the Observer, ECW currently holds the record for most buys for a non-WWE/WCW event in the US at 99k.
Assuming this one really is at 98k for live numbers, AEW very likely will break the record once replay buys are factored in.
For some comparisons, TNA/Impact's best ever was only in the 50-60k range.

Finally, I have my ratings for the show ready for you guys so without further delay...
CASINO BATTLE ROYAL - *
This was stupid and at the time of and certainly in hindsight was a poor opening match for the show and it's good that it was the pre show so you can make the argument that the opening match was on the ppv....
Sammy Gurvea vs Kip Sabian - * 1/2
Nothing offensive but it was the most boring match I've seen Sammy in. The lack of why should I care was overwhelming with this one. Totally fine for a pre show though.
SCU vs Black Hearts *** 3/4
I loved this match. The action was so hot, and technically precise. The charisma of SCU was off the charts and a great way to open up the show. Strong Hearts looked so good, what a fun match and yes very reminiscent in their own way of a WCW 6-Man cruiser on PPV or Nitro, just much better.
Women's Four-Way ***
This match ended very strong and that keeps the rating quite high. There were moments that it was in the ** range or lower but by the end they pulled off a very entertaining match. Kylie Rae's gimmick is so so for me but in the ring she is really great. Baker seems to be very solid but slightly green, Nyla was okay but kinda indyriffic and Kong was a good pop but in the ring very weak.
Best Friends vs Angelico and Evans *** 1/2
The match started with little heat but the action never let up. Thankfully the got the crowd great by the end. Angelico and Evans are insane and I love watching them do amazing bumps. Chuckie T is awesome and I think could be a future main player in AEW. Trent, I am not as sold on but his look and in ring work is fantastic. I've just not seen a lot of personality from him that makes him pop to me.
Joshi 6 Woman Tag ****
I fucking loved this. I felt like it went on a long time and I still didn't want it to end. So much hot Japanese and also so much bull dyke style. I loved the action and I hope they keep these women coming back.
Cody vs Dustin *****
This was everything. I could''nt have imagined this being so good. The emotion made it an instant classic. The blood was too much but you can't control that and still it was amazing.
The Young Bucks vs The Lucha Brothers **** 1/2
This was excellent, Young Bucks were at their best. They are the Evil Kenival of Pro Wrestling. I love watching the moves they come up with. I'm also a huge Lucha Bro's fan and I have touched both of their hands before.
Omega vs Jericho II **** 3/4
Perfect match for these two. I loved the violence and I though Kenny was in top form. I hope to see another showdown to settle the score soon.
This is going to go down as one of my all time favorite PPV's ever of all time.
