That was mainly because WWE had the brain dead decision to not edit out his martyring of Taker on the same week that the London terror attacks happened.

This was after UPN told them to cut the segment out because of the backlash it was going to cause and they still refused to do so. UPN had already been feeling uncomfortable with the darker tone of his gimmick and eventually got it canned due to WWE's stupidity.
