Matt Riddle and Brock Lesnar had what was called a “verbal altercation” and “tense encounter” backstage before the Royal Rumble on Sunday, according to Pro Wrestling Sheet and several other reports.

Details were initially scarce, but a new report by talkSPORT claims to know what was said.

According to talkSPORT, Lesnar approached Riddle backstage and grabbed his shoulder to get his attention, then said, “Kid, you might as well stop saying my name and tagging me in shit because you and I will never work together. Ever.”

Riddle then tried to respond, but Lesnar quickly “kept moving,” getting in his comments and walking off, talkSPORT says, adding that Riddle “was his usual, cool and composed self during the exchange” and “tensions never rose especially high.”

There is reportedly backstage heat on Matt Riddle, which is a reason why he was eliminated so quickly from the Royal Rumble, according to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio.

“Whatever it is, there’s a lot of heat on Matt Riddle right now. And if you were wondering what happened in the Royal Rumble and why, there’s your why. I don’t want to say it’s to teach him a lesson, but it probably is,” Meltzer said.

Riddle was eliminated from the match by King Corbin in just a few seconds after entering and just hitting a couple of kicks, only to be almost immediately tossed out by Corbin.

Meltzer speculated that Riddle “may have rubbed somebody the wrong way” backstage.

Riddle has been very outspoken on social media and has repeatedly taken shots at Goldberg, Brock Lesnar, Chris Jericho, Dana White and others.

He had a backstage “altercation” with Goldberg during SummerSlam, then reportedly had a similar altercation with Brock Lesnar backstage before the Royal Rumble this Sunday.

In September, Riddle posted the tweet below saying, “When none of your co-workers like you and you can’t get a ride to work #lonebro”

Seems like an arrogant prick to be honest. He needs to change his attitude and fast. I get that 2020 is a different time, but there is nothing wrong with giving respect to legends that go before you.

Lesnar did basically half the Rumble by himself, and you know what, it was great! His reactions to entrants, knowing how much to give while making himself look strong. This is a guy who can do whatever he wants, but he does it right. He sells for people, his facial expressions are amazing. Just look what Kevin Lee got out of a small exchange with him. He is a legend of the business and has a lot to pass on and teach.

Riddle would be better served sitting and learning from guys like Lesnar and Goldberg on how to work crowds and have that intangible charisma, rather than being a mouthy dickhead on social media tbh.

he better hope he does not get in a ring with lesnar, that would be a shoot fight

I could see WWE burying Riddle so that when he eventually doesn't re-up his contract that he's like Riddick Moss to AEW. IDK Riddle certainly is a prick, but he's a great wrestler. He should have gone to AEW or NJPW. Bad move on his part.

Riddle has talent, and can hold his own. Why Brock would get pissed about someone not even on his radar is dumb to me. Matt isn't the first nor last person to call out names to get themselves a little shine.

I like him. Think it's stupid to punish him and a very typical WWE maneuver.

I love him. He’s one of my favorite wrestlers in WWE. God forbid someone try to have personality and create conflict for a wrestling show. Why in the world would anyone want that?

Instead of punishing him, they should turn this into "his thing" on screen.

I feel pretty much the same..... that he is a good rassler, but should really be a heel

His online attitude is everything you want from a heel

That one Takeover match he had against Velveteen Dream and he was working pretty much like a heel too, and it seemed perfect for him..... really wanted him to "officially" turn heel after the match and beat Dream down

Lesnar fears Riddle

I feel like he is a natural face and works better as a face because he is very likeable imo!

If he turned heel, WWE would prob just make him be one of those "serious" heels who always has an "intense" and serious look on his face and never does anything cool or funny... which is totally against his natural personality imo

Good to great wrestler but pretty much working in the wrong company based on his personality type.

He's not shy about speaking his mind or showing real personality but WWE pretty much wants to control every aspect about a wrestler so nobody truly gets over without their involvement or approval.

Him being in the doghouse isn't a surprise since they don't want him hyping up people for a potential feud they have no plans for nor can deliver which is why Rollins got in trouble for his antics with Punk a while ago.

Becky Lynch buried most of the women’s division on twitter and her punishment was to win the Royal Rumble and win both women’s titles in the main event of Wrestlemania.

What are the standards here

I think more of this is a work than what people think. I'm not doubting that he's confident/arrogant, and some of the shoot comments aren't my flavor, but the whole "verbal altercation" stuff? That's a great way to generate interest for a match that could draw in the WWE but doesn't really have that same UFC appeal, despite having two UFC guys.

If they really wanted to bury Riddle, why didn't he take any shit? Why wasn't he put in there with Lesnar, told to not do anything, and get punked out by Brock with him and Heyman completely no-selling him? Why was he in the match at all?

The next time he's anywhere near a ring with Brock Lesnar, the audience they've cultivated is going to go nuts for any sort of Brock/Riddle interaction. It wouldn't surprise me if Riddle is a MITB, SummerSlam, Crown Jewel or Survivor Series opponent. Maybe they hold it off until next year's Rumble and do a stare-down between them during the Rumble itself to tease a Mania match? But I think we'll be looking at that by the latest.

Yeah, why film the Riddle/Goldberg stuff? Maybe Riddle did go into business for himself a bit, but they're obviously on-board with that stuff. If they wanted to send a message to Riddle, they could have brought him in for the ol' Spear/Jackhammer.

Emperor Smeat

Probably just them cheaply capitalizing on some of the online interest despite them nor Goldberg having any real desire for a potential feud. Plus they are usually taping stuff backstage for legal reasons and for Network/Youtube stuff.

Goldberg mentioned in a recent interview or two about mostly being annoyed at the antics after a while because once Riddle starts, he doesn't really stop unless he gets bored or finds someone new to go after.

Mr. Nerfect

A Goldberg/Riddle feud wouldn't work anyway. Riddle's appeal is in his ability to do some pretty freakish stuff and work athletic matches and the like. Goldberg's is in his ability to get people on their feet by just whooping ass.

A Goldberg/Riddle match would have to be over real quick. That's not really going to go in Riddle's favor. It's best to avoid it entirely. Brock/Riddle, on the other hand...

Ftr despite Goldbergs posturing a Riddle Goldberg shoot in 2020 would all Riddle all day.

Ftr despite Goldbergs posturing a Riddle Goldberg shoot in 2020 would all Riddle all day.

Oh, no doubt. And I think that is part of the reason why a guy like Goldberg, if that part is legit (because it's clearly not really promoting anything), may not sit well with him.

Supposedly Dipshit was meant to be in the spot that Nakamura got and Heyman got it changed as he was wary of what Lesnar might do if he got him in the ring.

I love him 10x more after all of this stuff. And it's a work anyways. He would have been dealt with by now just because he keeps doing it even though they supposedly have told him to stop if it was anything other than a work. I don't mean it's a work in the sense that it's leading up to Riddle/Goldberg or Riddle/Lesnar though, although it may at some point. It's a work in that it is all calculated intentionally to build him up and make him popular.

Sepholio

He is being built up for a future role as an anti-authority figure imo. He shit talks legends and part timers that the "authority" constantly try to lean on and when they tell him to stop he doubles down. Wouldn't be surprised to see Riddle/HHH at some point down the line.

Honestly, it's not like he suddenly started doing this. That's just him doing what he's always done. For Brock or WWE or anybody else to suddenly have a problem with it, I'd ask what changed from now to 2 years ago?

I'd agree with Seph, and while WWE is just as likely to follow up on it as they are to forget about it before any kind of payoff, it feels like a work.
