View Full Version : COVID-19 outbreak in Florida - Multiple WWE employees test positive
Multiple people in WWE test positive for COVID-19 per Ryan Satin, WWE banning crowds in the audience again as a result, Jon Moxley pulled from Dynamite by AEW due to potential COVID contact and Florida had over 5,000 new cases yesterday as the NBA and MLS get ready to start.

Wonder how things would have been for wrestling had Linda McMahon's Super PAC never sent that huge sum of money to Florida and its governor.
Surprised both AEW and WWE lasted as long as they did in Florida before getting rocked with coronavirus cases and scares. UFC barely lasted for a few weeks when it came to them triggering their first cases.

I know that networks are paying for original content but given the circumstances neither USA, FOX, nor TNT have a leg to stand on if the companies decided to air archive content for a week or two while they find a venue to tape at in a less outbreak-ridden state.
These companies don’t need to be taking these risks. It’s irresponsible for everybody.
Honestly, just air reruns until Extreme Rules
WWE could put on a Best of Monday Night RAW series the next few weeks and the ratings would be nearly the same.

Rumor going around the net is that this outbreak was caused by WWE being a bit reckless with their testing.
They didn't isolate people when they were doing tests and instead had everyone huddled around in one area before test results were known.

My thing with Cornette is he pretty much said "if you close your business or go into rehab to treat 'something else' that could cause the abuse, you're admitting guilt."
To me, that sounds like a guy telling you his playbook. Act like it's business as usual and that the claims are utterly preposterous so that you sound credible. Again, the claims could be complete nonsense and a way to fuck over Cornette, you never know. But just because he's brushing them off and acting confident he couldn't have done anything questionable doesn't mean shit.
Anyway, I don't see this getting all that far other than to make the people who hate Cornette hate him that much more while emboldening "the cult." Really difficult to nail someone for this, and Cornette already doesn't work for anyone.

This virus is such a bizarre one. It's seems so incredibly contagious, but they still have no idea of what the actual symptomatic infection rates are. Early estimates were about 15-20% of people have any kind of symptoms at all. It seems with how contagious it is that logically there are likely way more people infected that do not show symptoms.

Even worse is supposedly the virus can also infect those who already had and recovered from it meaning there might not be any real immunity to it.
Would make the idea of herd immunity almost impossible if true. That's been one of the talking points from those who are against wearing masks and shutdowns since they rather have everyone get sick to build up that immunity and get this whole thing over with as soon as possible.

Guess the coronavirus situation for SD is that bad that WWE can't tape a full episode of SD tomorrow. Going to be airing a "Tribute to Undertaker" special to eat up time during tomorrow's show.
The Undertaker’s latest match took place at this year’s WrestleMania event where he defeated AJ Styles in a Boneyard match. At the conclusion of The Undertaker’s ‘Last Ride’ docu-series, it was hinted that-that bout might be Undertaker’s last. Undertaker took to social media recently and thanked all who have been on this journey with him. To celebrate The Undertaker, WWE is hosting a “Tribute To The Undertaker” segment on SmackDown.
As a part of the tribute, The Undertaker and AJ Styles’ Boneyard match from WrestleMania 36 will air during the broadcast.

South Korea recently reported that a significant number of COVID-19 patients have tested positive, then tested negative only to test positive and experience symptoms, like fever, cough, sore throat, and fatigue, again.
South Korean health officials suspect patients are experiencing a viral reactivation, but health experts in the United States don’t think a reactivation of COVID-19 is likely, since we’ve never observed viral reactivation in other coronaviruses.

No, only gave him like a couple hundred million at most to setup and run the company. Enough to last for like 2 years but not enough to hit that 5 year goal if they were not making any real revenues.
Only reason the Carters bankrolled TNA/Impact for years despite it being a huge money pit was to keep Dixie preoccupied and away from the family business. Tony Khan has a lot more involvement with his dad's businesses and AEW is meant to be him branching out and running his own business.
Even Vince with his huge sums of money bailed on the XFL both times it ran into potential money issues despite promising it hundred of millions the last time.

Apparently WWE is keeping test results hidden from most of the roster in regards to how widespread the coronavirus situation is within the company. Also didn't bother to test everyone at the PC last week despite the positive test announcement.
Also seems WWE is now asking for talent to come in for tapings regardless if they feel uncomfortable working at the PC. Complete 180 of their earlier stance of nobody being required or urged to show up for work if they didn't feel comfortable.
Upon news of numerous positive tests on Thursday, several members of the roster have contacted Fightful, with one even asking how many positive tests were rumored because "we'd know better than them." WWE wrestlers have not been informed of even an approximate number of tests, let alone who tested positive ...
There were multiple NXT wrestlers who needed to be re-tested after "being exposed to somebody positive," but they tested negative. There was also concern and worry over a couple of small gatherings that took place among wrestlers, considering the rumored numbers are so high. We're told that it's across all kinds of departments, and despite last week's news, there were still some at the PC who were not required to come in for testing before this week ...
Those who were tested yesterday do not yet have their results back. We'd heard from several NXT and PC talent that were doing to skip this week's tapings after the second COVID test, then accelerated by the numerous other tests. However, they were urged to come in even after expressing that they weren't comfortable doing so.
I'm beginning to wonder if WWE won't end up with a lot of lawsuits after rona
It's shocking how mis-managed this is all coming out to be

Besides Vince, Triple H should also be taking a ton of flack since he pretty much has been the public voice of the company in regards to their mis-handling of the coronavirus.
He's the one who publicly downplayed the testing being done elsewhere because he claimed those tests were not as reliable as what WWE was doing (which was almost nothing) and boasted about the disinfectants WWE was using at the PC made it impossible for an outbreak to happen there.

Apparently those performing and in the audience for tonight's Smackdown won't know the results of their recent tests until tomorrow.
Turns out only RAW talent have been given their results so far according to the Observer.
You'd figure with SD being more important tonight, WWE would have gotten the results for the blue brand first but decided to do it ass backwards instead.
Also supposedly WWE didn't like the results from the earlier testing done this week which is why they had another round of testing done on Thursday to see if the numbers would lower. That doesn't seem to be the case according to both PWI and the Observer.

If the WWE are using the same crew since it's all in the Performance Center, it's possible that crew members could pass it on to people with connections to AEW. Crew member to Adam Cole to Britt Baker, for example. Regardless of what you want to say about AEW being careless/careful in all of this, they could end up infected by WWE's recklessness. WWE could end up resorting to putting on old footage of shows while AEW goes out of business because their top stars come down and they've got nothing to show in place.

Apparently the current plan within WWE regarding the new travel ban from several states for Florida is to just bypass it like the last time a ban was in place for a specific state.
We do know that the plan going forward to subvert the quarantine, including this week, was for the people in those states to instead fly out of Philadelphia to Orlando, and back to Philadelphia, and drive from there back to Connecticut or New York for those who live there. Even though that is very much a violation of what the governors want and can be punishable by a $1,000 fine (in New York the potential fines are $2,000 for a first offense and $10,000 for subsequent offenses), the reality is they are not blockading the border of New Jersey driving in so there is a large Philadelphia loophole. It does go against the very thing the Governors are trying to avoid, but it’s an exceedingly low-risk of getting punished. WWE had also thwarted similar regulations months ago, when New York was in such bad shape and Florida had regulations not allowing people to fly into their state, and WWE moved all flights at that time to Philadelphia to get around the statute.
Also their idea to solve their current taping dilemma is to just tape stuff during next week despite that week was meant to be an off week for coronavirus quarantine reasons.
Also supposedly Kevin Dunn was the mastermind on the ban of face masks for WWE shows and WWE only relented on the issue due to the growing complaints from their current outbreak.
Meltzer also reported that despite the new face mask requirements in Orange County, WWE got exempted from it due to it mainly targets public places and the PC is a private place.

Renee Young has heat on her because she went and got tested outside of the WWE tests at the PC, and for being the first to go public with her positive diagnosis because it caused others to follow suit. Nobody in power (Vince, Triple H, Dunn, Carano) has called to check up on her either.
Meltzer reported that from a “source” but the way it was worded it seems almost certain that it came directly from Moxley.

Unless WWE owns another building or has a wrestling studio in their HQ, they might be out of luck for moving out of their PC for regular tapings.
AEW does have QT Marshall's wrestling school but Tony Khan recently mentioned that's no longer an option because of the coronavirus situation in Georgia and issues the last time they ran there.
Both really should just tape like a month's worth of shows and then just sit back and see if things improves after a month. Impact's been doing that strategy recently where they taped a month or so worth of shows in Nashville and then sat back afterwards on two occasions.

Not sure what's the deal with AEW, but with Vince, it sounds like he sees COVID as a personal affront. The fact that people think he should shut things down is all the more reason to push forward. Similar to Dana White, he believes the world is now a bunch of pussies.

I know down in the Connecticut panhandle there's some studios that do production. Jerry Springer and some daytime Soaps do filming down there. BUT, Connecticut is doing really good with the Coronavirus. So, I doubt no matter how much you sweet talk Lamont, he's not going to let them in. Because now you gotta quarantine for 14 days. Even if the new WWE HQ got a studio of some sort they can stuff a ring in. They're stuck in Florida.
AEW is in a tricky spot. But, they can manage. They're doing a better job with virus testing. However, I think they need to ditch the staff crowd that's slowly been growing on TV each week.. Keep the roster crowd at ringside but crackdown on the social distancing. Put a bubble around Daily's Place and keep everything super tight, they'll be fine. And, I would give the roster the choice to stick around and ride it out. Or head home.

Supposedly they feel confident in being able to tape every other week because of easy access to actual coronavirus tests unlike when they did a big batch of tapings in Georgia.
Its not UFC level of testing but enough to avoid being caught completely off guard unlike what happened with WWE. UFC is doing 4-5 tests for every fighter scheduled for fights at their Fight Island for comparisons.

According to a reported by The Middleton Press, Connecticut billionaires have fared well during the COVID-19 pandemic. Among those billionaires is WWE CEO Vince McMahon, whose net worth has grown from $1.8 billion to $1.977 billion, from March to June. That's a $177 million (9.8%) growth during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile in Florida stuff, Jacksonville became the latest location there to issue new face mask wearing requirements. All indoor events and beaches must have people wearing face masks at all times with some exceptions. AEW likely will be exempted due to Daily's Place being an outdoor venue but wouldn't be surprised if they started having the wrestlers in the crowd wear face masks.

It'd be kind of a silver lining if the coronavirus leads to Vince McMahon and Kevin Dunn stepping away from the WWE in such an active capacity.
A friend in FL contacted the arena WWE wanted to run live shows at in July, RP Funding Center in Lakeland, FL -- they told him even though the July shows are canceled WWE does have dates booked in August and hopes to announce them soon, so Vinny Mac definitely plans on getting fans back in the arena as soon as he can.

Austin Aries and Low Ki being absolute fucking nutjobs is not surprising in the least.
It'd be kind of a silver lining if the coronavirus leads to Vince McMahon and Kevin Dunn stepping away from the WWE in such an active capacity.
Is there a way for Vince to be ousted without willingly leaving? You know that thing in movies where the board overthrow s someone or something?
Now would be the time.

Think he'd have to be involved in a big enough scandal that causes advertisers to start leaving en mass or severely damages the company's image to the point the only option on the table is him leaving.
Anything else and I think he'd have to willingly give up his controlling shares and power to make any ouster effective.

He basically doesn't want to be like his father where he didn't know what to do with his life outside of wrestling. Took a lot of convincing by Vince and his father starting to deal with some health issues to get that change at the top to happen.
Also doesn't help that WWE's investors are still not that high on the idea of Triple H & Steph taking over despite Triple H's increase hand in company operations and NXT's success in general.

According to DDP, him and QT Marshall recently tested positive for the coronavirus.
DDP caught the virus following a recent bridal shower party he attended while QT managed to test positive twice for the virus since being in contact with a friend who later tested positive for it. QT first tested positive for the virus about 3 weeks ago and then tested positive again this week.
According to DDP, he took a COVID-19 test. For a number of days he appeared to be experiencing COVID-19 symptoms and was feeling very sick, before his test came back negative. He also reveals he spoke to AEW wrestler QT Marshall, who at one point tested positive for COVID-19 about 20 days ago. Marshall told Page that he experienced three days of symptoms and “nothing after that.” However, Marshall’s wife, Caroline, tested negative while seemingly being very sick and experiencing one symptom after another. Marshall also apparently underwent another test that said he’s still positive this week.

Apparently WWE had another outbreak at their Performance Center earlier this month and was revealed to be the reason for the tv tapings delay and issues at the time.
WWE was scheduled to tape multiple episodes of SmackDown on August 4, but plans changed.
According to Mike Johnson at PWInsider, WWE delayed the second taping of SmackDown and 205 Live on August 4 due to more people testing positive for COVID-19. It is unknown how many talents tested positive during this latest round of testing. The report notes that the rescheduling was a last minute thing as more tests came back positive.
WWE rescheduled the SmackDown and 205 Live tapings for Thursday, August 13. The shows taped on Thursday will air tonight, August 14, on FOX and WWE Network.
WWE has not confirmed more positive tests in the company.

According to the Observer and Post Wrestling, WWE's recent outbreak was really bad and something the company doesn't want to be made public in terms of the numbers and severity. Dave Meltzer reported earlier in the day that a lot of changes had to be made for this week's episode due to how bad NXT was affected.
Meanwhile Fightful and Spectrum Sports 360 reported that AEW also got hit with an outbreak around the week of September 9th which was their previous live taping session. Jon Alba reported that its not known if everyone who was missing from this week's tapings had tested positive or were being kept off as a precaution. Brian Cage mentioned on Twitter earlier in the day that he wasn't feeling well but didn't mention if it was coronavirus related or not.

In terms of other notable promotions that got hit with an outbreak recently, CMLL in Mexico had to pull several wrestlers from their upcoming Anniversary Show due to them all testing positive for the virus.
Edit: Turns out the coronavirus situation in CMLL is way worse than was being originally reported around the net.

- CMLL has had older staff working behind the scenes & is bringing in edecanes (who work large gatherings) on Friday.

CMLL has been doing testing, though it's the bare minimum & everyone who tested positive also had a negative test from CMLL. According to Meltzer, WWE's recent outbreak is currently believed to be lower in terms of number of positive tests compared to their last outbreak but also managed to spread beyond NXT and their Performance Center since several on the main roster also have tested positive.
Also said that just like NXT, creative changes are likely going to be made soon for the main roster to cope with the on-going situation.
Meltzer also stated that while the number of positive cases are not as high as the previous outbreak - when 38 members of the NXT staff reportedly contracted the virus - the number "is not small" either. While noting that the outbreak started after one of the NXT coaches tested positive, Meltzer went onto mention that a lot of people backstage "were perhaps laxed" and stopped taking precautions to shield themselves from the virus. He said the outbreak has also impacted the main roster and could alter creative plans this coming week on Raw and SmackDown.

WrestlingInc had a very good interview with Sports Illustrated's Justin Barrasso who mentioned WWE and AEW needs to enact a bubble like some sports have done if they want to avoid more outbreaks because of how mismanaged combating the virus has been in Florida.
Also AEW reportedly changed their testing procedures as a result of their recent outbreak.
The Wrestling Inc. Daily podcast welcomed Sports Illustrated's Justin Barrasso on where he and Wrestling Inc. Managing Editor Nick Hausman chatted about the recent COVID-19 outbreaks in WWE and AEW. Wrestling Inc. has exclusively reported that AEW has changed their COVID testing procedures as more talent have tested positive. Barrasso commented on the recent news.
"Well, I think it's just a reflection of society. The virus is real," Barrasso said. "It's tough too. When you're not in that bubble setting, I think we've seen that in Major League Baseball, somehow we haven't seen it yet, it's still early, in the NFL, but I think the bubble scenario works so much better. It's not as feasible for pro wrestling. Pro wrestling is just too active.
"The NBA, we've seen the bubble work for a few months, but I mean for WWE or AEW, how would you sustain that? To me, it's not that surprising when you don't have the capability of the bubble, especially working out of Florida where it's been prevalent and not even at the shows. It's more so in terms of people have to live their lives outside of it too, and it's bound to happen when there's no bubble."
Hausman asked Barrasso if WWE and AEW should adopt the bubble concept that the NBA and NHL have done. Barrasso liked the idea noting that wrestling fans want the best for the wrestlers but notes that TV contracts could prevent that from happening.
"It's not a bad idea. I think in general, wrestling fans care about the talent they're watching," Barrasso noted. "So I think that if it meant we had to see a few episodes of taped content so you could go in the bubble, you can self isolate, you could make sure everyone can test and then you could air, you could film however many episodes, say you film eight episodes or ten episodes, I think the viewers would be understanding that the talent need to be safe too.
"Especially in the midst of a pandemic, I don't think it needs to be live every week. Now, it might be different with WWE with television contracts and FOX and NBC Universal, but I think that it's something to consider. The priority should always be the safety of the talent."

Seems a recent party held featuring NXT and AEW talent might have been the main cause for why both companies got hit with an outbreak roughly at the same time.
The current assumption is one of WWE's PC coaches had the virus and inadvertently spread it within the PC and NXT which likely then led to NXT talent inadvertently spreading it to AEW talent at this party. There are other potential sources for the spread but that party seems to be getting the most attention at the moment.
