View Full Version : Who is on your Mount Rushmore of WWE Female Superstars

Strictly Wrestlers. You can count Sable and Steph. Elizabeth and Sunny not eligible.

Someone posted this in a facebook group I'm in and it's WAY harder picking 4 female Superstars than it is male.

Wendi Richter, Sable, Trish Stratus and Charlotte Flair

Someone from Rock 'n' Wrestling, someone from the Attitude era, someone from that attempt to turn Divas into wrestlers and someone from the post-Divas presentation.

I'd go

Wendi
Chyna
Trish
Moolah

Hard leaving out names like Madusa, Beth Phoenix, Charlotte, Becky and Lita

Very close to my list. I considered Moolah for a bit, just because of significance, good and bad. I didn't consider Beth at all though. Is there a reason she made your shortlist?

4 time champion and 3 of those 4 were pretty long reigns. She held that division together for a long long time and was far ahead of her peers during that era. Came along 10-15 years too early.

And moolah is non negotiable. Her impact is inarguable. Moralizing who's an alltime great is idiotic. She had the career she had; its irrelevant of any dealings outside the ring. The cosby show remains an all time great sitcom. Michael Jackson is still the king of pop. 2 slave owners are on the ACTUAL mt Rushmore.

Sable was a huge part of the WWFs success in the late 90s but more over Sable is the reason a womens division became a staple. the title was brought back as a prop for sable and women were hired and built up to give her stuff to do

Without her Trish and the work she did to legitimize womens wrestling in the states would have never occured. Sables impact dwarfs chynas.

I suppose I'll defend Richter too while im here. The optics of Richter are symbiotic in Hogans mainstream success. Rock n wrestling is a big part of his history and her ability to bridge the gap into the MTV audience cannot be undersold. Those eyeballs that she garnered translated into a generation of wrestling fans. Many of which where the same viewers in the late 90s just older.

Completely agree about her being too early. Just surprised to see her make your four, I guess, haha.

Destor is right on all counts. I’m probably being too cerebral with Moolah and cutting her for revisionist “What was she really worth?” thinking.

In my serious answer.... gonna leave off Moolah and Richter, because while the arguments for them sound good.... I don't really know them.... so I guess this list is more "personal experiences" rather than "objective".

Sable
Trish
AJ Lee
Charlotte Flair

Lock Jaw

Wasn't really a fan of Sable, but I can admit the ratings she brought, and it is a good point that the belt was brought back for her, so she kind of kicked off the entire "modern era".

Trish because she began to actually legitimize the division and the belt for a number of years. Also because she was involved in a storyline with Christian. *shifty eyes*

I picked AJ Lee because it seemed like the "divas division" post-Trish had just sunk back down into murky depths again.... I feel like it was AJ Lee who really started to pull it out and really spark off the current emphasis on women's wrestling.

If AJ Lee is the one who lit the spark, then Charlotte Flair is the one to carry the torch. So many historic firsts for women, bazillion time champion... Much as I love Becky Lynch, she would not have got as over without a Charlotte Flair to work against.

I tried to pick not just based on in ring accomplishments.

AJ Lee - Before she even had her successful championship run, she was a big part of a lot of storylines, and worked aside main event men. She was the GM of Raw, was certainly the one who stood out as the best female during the beginning of the Total Divas era, and after her successful run when WWE tried to go back to 2 minute "diva matches" the #givedivasachance came about. As much as WWE ignores it, or tries to portray Paige as the kickstarter of the Evolution, it was AJ. This was my hardest pick, hence the long explanation.

Becky Lynch - She is the only female to truly ascend to face of the company level of superstardom. She was the easiest pick.

Charlotte Flair - She is the John Cena of the women's division. Just by the sheer amount of accolades WWE has given her for 5+ years going back to NXT, it's impossible to leave her off.

Stephanie McMahon - While she rarely wrestles, she has contributed more to the storylines over the last 2 decades+ than any 3 females combined.

As much as others accomplished prior to AJ Lee, it's hard for me to say they should be included when WWE themselves never gave any of them a shot at being an equal part of the show for any sustained amount of time.

I think through her stories with the men, people actually cared about her, so then when she got involved in the actual women's division, people once again started to care about it. For the first time since Trish, there were actual stories and feuds that kind of meant something.

You are probably right, but somebody was going to kick it off, and it was her. Somebody else mentioned that when other females had good runs, when the runs ended it quickly would go back to random quick nothing segments, and nobody cared.

When WWE tried to do that after AJ, the fans shit on WWE to the point they immediately changed the direction of the entire company. If AJ Lee wasn't so good in her role, it wouldn't have been such a quick course correction.

AJ was never my favorite, but I think the "Mount Rushmore" discussion is based on importance and accolades more than just who are our personal favorites.

I would say only Becky makes my personal favorite 4 out of the 4 I picked above, but I don't see anybody more important.

Ah shit, sorry, that was just me misspeaking. What's your favorite Beth Phoenix match? To be honest, I always liked her and felt like she could be "more."

That's what I mean. I can point to a good Beth Phoenix match or a good Mickie James match. I can't point to a good AJ Lee match.

Mickie James was great too. When she came along in 2005/2006, I thought she was the right combination of sex appeal and talent. I completely bought into that crazy bitch act. Trish vs. Mickie was my favorite build to WrestleMania 22, not going to lie, just because it felt like it was the right two people fighting each other. Every other match, to my nerd brain, felt bumped by Triple H taking the main event and marred by horrible booking.

AJ Lee is someone I liked at the time, mainly because I bought into her being good. I can't remember one good match she had except with Kaitlyn though (who actually seemed to get more over too). I got so annoyed by her OTT skipping gimmick though. It's kind of funny to hear her diss Nikki Bella by suggesting that talent isn't sexually transmitted.

Paige exposed herself on the main roster too.

Someone I always liked, but haven't exactly revisited the work of is Victoria. I liked her as the crazy bitch with Stevie Richards as the man servant with the Tatu music. Weird to think Nikki Minaj did the vocals on her later theme. Weird that the WWE have kind of swept her under the rug. That just can't be because a sex tape of her leaked.

Just thinking about a few favorites over the years.

Kaitlyn I loved, so much so that I actually tuned in live to the Mae Young classic when she returned. She is only 33, they should bring her back!

Melina was another one I was a big fan of. Her whole presentation was fun.

Maryse, the perfect combo of drop dead gorgeous mixed with arrogance and goofy funny.

And though not very good in the ring, Ashley Massaro (RIP) was different enough from the rest of the female roster in that she had that punk rock edge, that she certainly stood out in a good way.

Honorable mention, Dawn Marie was, well I can't really remember anything she did in WWE other than marry and kill Al Wilson, but she was so good during that run, I am counting it!
