Seems the reason why Matt Hardy got busted open during the show was due to Sammy grabbing the wrong chair to nail Hardy.

He was supposed to hit Hardy with a regular folding chair that was at ringside for the spot but panicked a bit when he couldn't quickly find it and grabbed the nearest chair instead which ended up being heavier.

More details are online regarding Sammy Guevara getting heat over bloodying Matt Hardy with the chair throw on last night’s AEW Dynamite. Bryan Alvarez had more details on the incident in Thursday’s WOL, noting that Guevara grabbed the wrong chair to hit Hardy with.

According to Alvarez, there was a traditional folding chair at ringside that Guevara was supposed to grab to throw at Hardy. He was unable to find that chair and panicked, grabbing another one which was heavier. When he threw the chair at Hardy, it busted him open. As noted earlier, Guevara got a “stern talking-to” when he got backstage.
