He was a great pretty boy heel and an even better grizzled brawler in his later years. Absolutely adept at the kind of blood-filled brawl that was the bread and butter of the WWWF of the '70s.

This man gave us the Royal Rumble. The one WWE show of the year I will continue to watch even when I don't follow the product, just because I love the Rumble match so much.

So the way the old WWWF/WWF World Title was booked until Hogan's reign when it gradually stopped was the you'd have Bruno or Backlund as the champ. The heel challenger would come into the territory, wrestle maybe an underneath guy like SD Jones in his first match at MSG and around the loop, then next month maybe against a upper mid carder like Chief Jay Strongbow which would lead to matches against the World Title holder. If you did ok business you'd get 1 match against the champ at MSG. If you did really well, you'd get 3 matches against the champ at MSG (First two matches ending without a pinfall winner like a blood stoppage or DQ, 3rd match the champ would go over)

Patterson had an unprecedented 4 straight matches against Backlund at MSG and they are amazing matches. That's how well he did.

He'd later become a commentator who would stand up to the bully heel like he did with Slaughter as well as Angelo Mosca and finally Ivan Koloff in late 83. The matches were always fantastic.

His face turn was really interesting. The Grand Wizard who was his manager sold his contract to Captain Lou. Patterson was upset by this because he thought Cap Lou was a slime ball and refused. That's what turned him face in a territory that VERY rarely had face or heel turns.

I wish more footage of his team with Ray Stevens from the AWA was around.

It's a giant loss to wrestling and wrestling history. The era is slowly fading away

Also, check out his book. It's great!

This match is fantastic.

At 12:18 Slaughter does the fastest cut job i've ever seen.

Also the thing about this match that current WWE has no concept of, is story building. They actually told a story in the ring. They didnt just go spot , spot spot spot spot spot bullshit which is WWE's problem. They made it mean something. Half the matches on RAW or Smackdown cant mean anything because they want to pack spots in the matches and they are held to a certain timeframe. It turns out lame. It's like cooking a turkey and having it come out bad. WWE dont know how to cook the turkey anymore.

Yeah, I was going to link a video regarding the debut of a certain wrestling turkey, but, no; I will not soil this thread of reflection with the likes of that abomination. We've been through enough.

The TV and the lead up to this match is fantastic as well. They had a match the previous month at MSG which was also really good.

That's the shitty thing with the WWE and how they release classic footage- they don't release enough footage that leads up to great matches of the era.

For example, you get a whole new appreciation for this feud and the Bruno Sammartino vs Larry Zbyzsko feud when you watch all the promos and TV leading up to the match.

Growing up in Northern California, Pat Patterson, Ray Stevens, Moondog Mayne and Pepper Gomez are the wrestlers I remember my parents talking about seeing constantly.

I forgot that Pat Patterson passed Moolah to become the oldest champion in WWE history when he briefly won the 24/7 title last year at 78.

I’ve found stuff from the late 70s but I’ve been looking for so long for earlier stuff from my parents childhood to show them.

Yeah the territory was fading towards the late 70s. I'll have to do some digging around.

Given Pat Pattersson's sexual orientation, I wonder as to how much boner action he's got going on in his pants in this pic. I say this in the most hetero way possible, but Dwayne The Rock Johnson is a better looking dude than 99.9% of the male population. Those tattoos, huge pecs, and massive biceps likely is giving Pattersson some serious wood here.

Sucks. Patterson deserves big ups for what he did not only as a wrestler, but in helping Vince craft the WWF into what it has become.

I always thought that Pat would be a death that would make Vince question his own mortality.

Pats homosexuality and vinces latent homosexuality is what infused the with its flamboyance and showmanship.

No straight man would dress Shawn Michaels like that in the early 90s.

did your mother drop you on the head?

Yes, but after attempting to give me the pedigree afterwards, I reversed it into the Walls of Jericho and she tapped. Hence, me still winning and you still giving head to the neighbours German Shepard.

have a special day for a very special man

But in all seriousness, is it really that farfetched to believe that Pat Pattersson would have sucked The Rock's dick if he The Rock had asked him to behind closed doors?

With those sideburns they would surely make an exception, probably replace General Lee with him.
