I have terrible news to report. Luke Harper/ Brodie Lee has passed away at age 41 due to a non-Covid related lung issue.

I was just saying to my sister yesterday that wrestlers seem to have a longer lifespan these days and that an active wrestler hasn’t died young in quite sometime. This sucks.

feel so much grief and sadness for his family first and foremost. 41 is no age for anyone to go...and I can’t imagine losing a father at that age.

Professionally, I feel gutted for the man and all his fans. He was outspoken about how unhappy he was being given mostly nothing to do for five years. He finally gets his big break, the chance to shine he deserves...and now he’s gone.

Just a horrible tragedy.

Was thinking about stuff from Lee's matches I enjoyed a lot and his big boot might be my favorite for that move.

The way he'd follow through with the motion after the kick made it look a lot more impactful and brutal than most big guys who did that move.

From Reddit 8 days ago:

“Bonus Segment

Kenny Omega loses the AEW title to Brodie Lee

Kenny joins the Bucks in the ring and they offer a spot in The Elite to Brodie Lee Jr. (Brodie's 8 year old son). Dark Order comes out and starts a brawl that leads to Kenny and Brodie Jr. having a championship match. Brodie Jr. jumps on Kenny's back, taps him out with a rear naked choke, and is announced by Justin Roberts as the new AEW World Champion. Fun stuff that I'm guessing was a Christmas present for Brodie's kid. Could have been shot for some kind of fever dream segment for BTE or Dark Order's youtube stuff, but was probably just a fun thing for the kid.“

But they really filmed it to pop him from his hospital bed :(

First of all, R.I.P. to a guy who more or less overperformed all expectations of him. He was a big man who was agile. He was a decent talker and had incredible facial expressions. You believed the guy was nuts, which is hard to do in an era where everyone is edgy and it's all play and pretend. And so much of his shit looked devastating and brutal.

I remember when it was Brothers of Destruction vs. Two Members of the Wyatt Family I joked "OK, so who's teaming with Harper?" Because he was such a good worker.

Call me a cynical asshole, but if this somehow turns into some attack on Cornette because he was joking about how Lee was missing for a while (not knowing he was sick), the parties involved can go fuck themselves sideways with a chainsaw.

Wow, I know he has been off TV but damn. Wonder if he had lung cancer or Sarcoidosis. I have to think he would have had to pass a physical to sign with AEW, so whatever it was it was fast. RIP

Evil Vito
12-27-2020, 01:10 AM
He would’ve had a physical yes but unfortunately not all cancers are created equal. Some are barely detectable until they become advanced and therefore far harder to manage/operate on.

No idea what happened to him but he might’ve been a dead man walking for most/all of his AEW run. And the fact is it could happen to anyone and that’s what makes it such scary shit.

Emperor Smeat
12-27-2020, 01:17 AM
If it was cancer related, could have been something that was in remission until recently like what happened with Roman Reigns and his leukemia a couple years ago. In Reigns' case, he was very lucky it was detected very quickly and was the treatable type.

No idea what happened to him but he might’ve been a dead man walking for most/all of his AEW run. And the fact is it could happen to anyone and that’s what makes it such scary shit.

Right, exactly right, clearly it was not something obvious they would be checking for during a standard sports physical. The fact that he was at the Mayo Clinic certainly adds to that too since they are one of the top rated hospitals in almost every rare illness/specialized treatment providers.

It's sad when a Pat Patterson or Danny Hodge pass away, but this is much worse for all the obvious reasons.

Gutting that he never got to perform in front of one of those crowds in AEW.

His match with Mox for the title was one of my favorite matches of the year. When he smashed Cody I was so hyped. I wished his reign would've been longer. I am looking forward to knowing the details and timeline of his illness. Jon Silver said he was waiting daily for a positive update. I vaguely remember when he was taken off TV Meltzer said he was taking time off for a non injury related illness if I remember correctly. I was definitely looking forward to his return to Dynamite and his next story. This really sucks.

Luke Harper should have been in the WWE Title match at WrestleMania 33.

Think Harper around that time one of the biggest dropped balls of recent times.... he had some great showings against Orton and Wyatt both and the fans were getting behind him and his split.... and he seemed "poised" to enter the main event scene himself, if not at WM then shortly after.... even the commentary was putting him over....

But then instead of being involved in the main event in any way he just disappeared from TV for many months only to re-emerge tagged with Rowan again.

Eh, I liked him at the time too, but AEW has proven Vince right on a lot of guys. Rusev and Harper were just not main event guys. And that’s fine. Harper had a 6 or 7 year long run up in the biggest wrestling promotion in the world. He got to work with John Cena at WrestleMania. It wasn’t a bad career.

Expectation is that all participation in this week’s Dynamite and Dark tapings will be optional. AEW still deciding whether or not to do a video package etc for him and keep the rest of the episode as is, or just pause storylines for a week and do a full blown tribute show with talent that want to participate.

2020 has felt like forever. It wasn't until today I realized Brodie was only in AEW for like 6 or 7 months. I started thinking about his WWE performances because of the ongoing tweets. This guy was apart of some fantastic stuff in WWE. Yes of course the ladder match, that was amazing. But also the amount of great tag team matches with Rowan and arguably the best six man tags of all time with The Wyatt Family. Those matches I think started against Punk, Bryan and Kane... Maybe Ryback was involved too I can't really remember. But then with The Sheild. They developed a match formula that WWE relied on for a few years to get through a large chunk of 3 hours of Raw in an exciting way.

From Meltzer

The company knew. I guess that Jon’s wife pretty much told everyone in the company but they didn’t want it out so it wasn’t out, what the situation was with his lungs not working, essentially.

He had been hospitalized since the end of October. He did the match with Cody and the idea was for him to be off for a couple of weeks with the idea that he took such a brutal beating. And then when he was off, that’s when he got sick. I guess this would have been after the match, he had done a workout on his Peloton bicycle and he got really tired and he couldn’t figure out why. He couldn’t finish his workout. And then I guess it was shortly thereafter, maybe a couple of weeks after that where it got bad.

I don’t know all the details, I’m sure it’ll come out in time, but essentially his lungs stopped working and it got really grave and [AEW] were aware of how grave it was at the end. He was at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville.

AEW confirms their planned card for this week is moved to next week. Wednesday will feature tributes and matches that probably won’t be canon.

Cody, Orange Cassidy, and Pres10 Vance (apparently all three are Brodie Jr’s favorites) vs Team Taz

Young Bucks and Colt Cabana vs. Matt Hardy and Private Party

Adam Page, Alex Reynolds, and John Silver vs. MJF, Santana, and Ortiz

Anna Jay and Tay Conti vs. Britt Baker and Penelope Ford

Evil Uno, Stu Grayson, and Lance Archer vs. Eddie Kingston, The Butcher, and The Blade

I think removing it and him apologizing would have been enough. But Bruce Mitchell doesn't matter to me either way. I guess the thing about the article that made me raise my eyebrow was that line that was something like "SOONER OR LATER WE WILL GET ALL OF THE DETAILS OF HUBERS PASSING AND IT BETTER NOT BE SEEDY OR ELSE AEDUBYA GONE GET GOT". I hope it was his mom who signed that contract and not him. Because if it was indeed him, then the contract isn't worth the paper it's written on. As in, it's not legally binding because he cannot legally enter into a contract.

I mean, it's a cute PR move, but if they don't want to honor it because of being cheap, they are under no obligation to do so if he indeed signed it.

Yes. I am Bruce Mitchell. After all, referencing Contract Law is the exact same thing as saying that a Grieving Widow lied about her Husband's cause of death. :nono:

I mean, shit. I was saying that out of concern for the little dude's well being. If he actually has a job 10 years or so down the line, it relies on the following:

1. AEW has to still be a thing in 10 years. (and hopefully it is.)
2. Tony Khan choosing to honor a contract he is under no legal obligation to honor. (I mean hell, Kevin Dunn's entire professional career is based on something similar. So it isn't unlikely)
3. He doesn't find a different passion in his life and want to pursue it, instead. (The kid is only 8.)

It's a PR move. Nothing more. Nothing less. Not as a knock on Tony, the child, or anyone else. But because AN 8 YEAR OLD CAN'T LEGALLY ENTER INTO A CONTRACT.

Good point. It was more likely a little thing Tony Khan did to take the child's mind off of all the horrible stuff going on in his life. Kind of like a "Your Dad is gonna get better, don't worry. How about this, you get to be a Pro Wrestler tonight! Here's you a contract to sign so you can wrestle like your Daddy!" More of a Make a Wish thing than anything else.

Nothing malicious or even ridiculous. It was likely folks thinking the Make a Wish contract meant as a way to take his mind off his sick Dad was an actual, legally binding one. And my reaction was based on people thinking said Make a Wish contract meant as a way to take his mind off his sick Dad was an actual, legally binding one.

And let's be honest, Brodie Huber could probably whip Darby Allen in a fight. :shifty::p

Shut up.

Bruce Mitchell got fired because the prick doubled down. If he would of came out and apologized then he would still have a job.

Learn to apologize and be humble. Don’t be a cocksucker. Simple.

Shut up.

No.

Also, I was mistaken. The way it was reported by the media made it feel like a PR move. When I actually read Tony Schiavone's post on it, I realized it was more of a "Make a Wish" type light hearted thing for taking his mind off his problems rather than an actual contract.

Did he actually say Brodie's wife was lying? I thought he was just speculating it was covid. All those subscriber journalist are bad and I try to ignore them, although often I fail. If he said she was lying, I take back my previous statement, firing him is justified. Further proof these hacks aren't real journalist.

This is awful. He died way too young, was super talented, and by all appearances was an incredibly nice/good person with a young, growing family. They also say only the good die young, but that certainly doesn't make it any easier or better. RIP

I thought that was weird too. America fucking sucks.

They spelt his name wrong in their own video.

You're a super classy guy Noid.

Totally miss/ignore the point of a thread honoring someone who tragically passed away too young, and instead you chose to shit on, or at best minimize the talents and accomplishments of, the same person. It seems like it's all about the fact that the guy wanted, enjoyed, and chose to work for a company that some folks happen to enjoy that isn't WWE.

From the sound of things, Brodie needed a lung transplant, and after being hospitalized he never got healthy enough to qualify for one. According to Meltzer, had he been able to get a transplant (also a problem for a guy his size), he would have had to live "heavily immunocompromised and take a lot of anti-rejection drugs".

In all likelihood, his career was going to be over no matter what. And they still don't know what caused it. Terrible.

Does anyone know if Brodie vaped? Just curious cause someone did mention some talk of it. I read a message he sent to Marko Stunt and there was a section marked out and it seemed to say "smoke a bowl/joint/spliff, if that's your thing". Super speculation here but if he was vaping he could have been using thc vapes and there are some very dangerous chemicals used in what I call "bathtub oil". Basically street oils that are likey (in my research, experience and opinion) the cause for the vaping epidemic we had about two years ago. I don't use THC anymore but when I did I went through a lot of oils. I don't live in a legal state so I know for a fact sometimes I was sold these bullshit oils that taste bad and also hurt the lungs. One cart I got made me quite sick with a deep flemmy cough on every hit. Again this is all speculation and I have mucho respect for Brodie irregardless of what caused his lung failure. However if my speculation is correct I hope that it is a story that makes it's rounds as a preventative measure for people buying street oils. Hopefully marijuana will be federally legal soon and this issue will damper greatly. You generally don't find these shit thc vape oils in legal states at legal dispensaries.

So Amanda Huber did an episode of the AEW Unrestricted podcast and she shed some light on the timeline with Brodie's passing. Someone on Reddit wrote up a summary...it's tough to read, really really sad stuff which paints a very rapid decline:

---

Monday (no specific date is given, but through process of elimination, this is likely October 19th):
-On the day of Brodie Lee recording the AEW Unrestricted Podcast, he was on his Peloton bike but was unable to finish his workout, citing a shortness of breath. This was very unusual for him, and concerned about the possibility of Covid-19, Amanda took his temperature and checked his senses of taste and smell, but it all seemed normal.

Tuesday
-He tried the workout again, with the same result.

Wednesday
-He drove to Jacksonville for Dynamite tapings. He tested negative for Covid-19, but due to his symptoms, Doc Sampson did not feel confident allowing him inside their bubble, so he drove back home.
-As a precaution, Brodie quarantined in his bedroom, away from Amanda and the kids.

Thursday
-He developed a high fever. Amanda kept him hydrated but he was not eating.
-Additionally, he got a nasal swab test. The results came back Sunday, and were negative.

Friday
-Went to Urgent Care and was diagnosed with Bronchitis and allergies. Brodie & Amanda didn't agree with that diagnosis. Brodie said that he felt like he had pneumonia.
-He was prescribed an oral antibiotic, an oral steroid, and allergy medication.

Sunday
-Brodie was showing visible signs of distress. His face was sunken in.
-They went to the hospital. He was leaning on Amanda as they were walking, as he was having trouble. Amanda told him to sit down and that they should get a wheelchair, but Brodie refused.
-They took him back to triage. They checked his temperature, but at that time his fever had gone away. They checked his oxygen multiple times (with multiple machines), as they didn't believe the result. His oxygen level was 52 (normal is ~100, an asthma attack is ~85). He was rushed back to be put on oxygen.
-The doctors suspected Covid-19, and he was tested again (the third time, so far). Again, the results were negative.

Amanda notes that his health seemed to have ups and downs over this timespan. Sometimes he would seem okay, but other times he clearly wasn't.

-Wednesday
-He was taken to the ICU so that they could keep a better eye on him.

At this point, various people at AEW were aware of Brodie's health issues, as it was known that he was sent home from work. Chris Harrington in particular (a long-time friend of the Hubers) reached out to them offering their help. Amanda initially declined. This was at least in part due to Amanda wanting to keep things close to the vest, as they tended to live a private life and she did not want this to end up in the dirt sheets.

October 31st (Halloween)
-The doctor told her that they needed to transfer Brodie to another hospital outside of Tampa. They opted for the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, since she knew they had some connections through AEW in Jacksonville.
-The reasoning for the transfer was described as 'a matter of life or death.' He needed to go on an ECMO machine as well as possibly needing a lung transplant.
-Brodie was still conscious at this point, but they told Amanda she shouldn't see him now because she was clearly emotional and they worried it would just upset and make things worse for Brodie. She was told to go back home and pack a bag and come back.

As an aside, Brodie Jr wanted to be Orange Cassidy for Halloween. Amanda initially thought that was silly and that nobody would know who Orange Cassidy was, but one of Brodie's last words were "Go buy him a fucking denim jacket." Amanda hand-painted a Brodie Lee costume for Nolan to wear. They were especially looking forward to this Halloween, since it was going to be Brodie's first one home with the family.

Later That Same Day
=Amanda did not want to lie to Brodie Jr and tell him that everything would be okay, but instead tried to focus on the positives: that his dad was going to the best hospital in Florida where they would try to take good care of him.
-She took pictures of her boys in their costumes so that she could show them to Brodie when she got to the hospital.
-Just as she was about to pack her bag to go back to the hospital she received a call that he "crashed and was intubated."
-When she arrived to his hospital room she said it was "horrifying to look at." The room was trashed and he had a tube down his throat. She had to sit in the conference room as they awaited the flight transfer. Around 1am they boarded the plane and flew to Jacksonville.

November 1st
-Brodie was placed on an ECMO machine and being prepped for surgery.
-Amanda had to stay at a hotel in Jacksonville. Despite wanting to handle it on her own, AEW insisted on covering the costs of the hotel.

Amanda commends the nurses and staff at the Mayo Clinic for how kind and compassionate they were - not only in helping Brodie, but in helping her and keeping her informed.

As someone who doesn't like receiving help from others, Amanda takes a moment to talk about how she has benefited from medication and therapy to help get her through these difficult times.

November 9th
-Amanda signed paperwork to start the lung transplant process for Brodie.
Amanda came to talk to AEW. They asked her how they wanted to handle this, and she told them that she wanted to keep all of this private. She offered to speak to the locker room personally, to hopefully "guilt" them into not letting this information leak out. Both Amanda and Aubrey mention routinely checking places like Reddit to see if the information had leaked.

At some point at the Mayo Clinic he was tested for Covid-19 again. This time, via a "bronchial wash," a method the clinic had used in the past to discover Covid cases that otherwise did not appear via traditional tests. Again, the result was negative.

November 14th (Amanda's birthday)
-The nurses had made a banner and surprised Amanda with a birthday cake.

End of November
-Brodie had begun showing signs of getting better. They had performed a tracheotomy so that Brodie could be removed from the ventilator. He was able to wake up and non-verbally communicate with Amanda (smiling, mouthing words). He started physical therapy and things were looking up.
Instead of the ventilator, he was put on oxygen. Unfortunately, he suffered a panic attack, which is when things took a turn for the worse.

December
-She knew there were going to be setbacks (2 steps forward, 1 step back), but in December things seemed to just continually get worse and worse.
-They wanted to revisit the idea of a lung transplant. It was described to her as Brodie needing either a "lung transplant or end of life care."
-While in the hospital, Brodie got an infection in his lungs. She found out about this sometime around December 13th, her and Brodie's wedding anniversary.

December 16th (Brodie's birthday)
-Chris Jericho flew Brodie Jr up to Jacksonville on his private jet. He got to attend a live episode of Dynamite that night, which was a big deal to him as he was such a big wrestling fan, and aside from having his dad home, was the second thing he wanted most for Christmas.
-That night, Amanda was expecting to receive a phone call on the decision as to whether or not Brodie would receive a lung transplant. She didn't hear anything, which she assumed meant it would be a "no." This was later confirmed to the case, as it was declined by the transplant doctors, but one other doctor was adamant in wanting to exhaust every option and not give up.

December 23rd
-Over the past week or so they were turned down by some other transplant centers, and still waiting to hear back from some others.
-Amanda decided to go home for a few days to spend time with her kids for Christmas.
-She said that she would call to check in every day, but did not want to hear from the hospital otherwise. "I don't want to hear any bad news."

December 24th (Christmas Eve)
-Despite her requests, she received a phone call from a doctor (one she wasn't particularly a fan of) saying that they needed to begin end of life care. At this point, Brodie's kidneys and heart were failing. Amanda refused to come back to Jacksonville, as she was determined to spend Christmas with her children - despite the risk that she may not be there when Brodie passes.

December 25th (Christmas Day)
-Some family had flown in and they tried to have a normal Christmas day, despite the obvious difficulties.
-That night, along with her brother-in-law and sister-in-law they flew back to Jacksonville. The kids were staying with her mother-in-law, and drove up the next day.
-She called Cody Rhodes (who had been close with Amanda throughout the whole process, and who has the experience of having a larger-than-life father pass away) and Big E (Brodie Jr's favorite wrestler) to see if they would be willing to come to the hospital and be there when she had to tell Brodie Jr about his father's passing.

December 26th (Brodie Lee's passing)
-Cody, Big E, Shawn Spears, Peyton Royce, Tyler Breeze, and Margaret and Megha from AEW's PR/Legal team (who had been very supportive of Amanda throughout this ordeal - the former who had brought food to her hotel room and the latter who invited her to Thanksgiving dinner) all came to the hospital to say goodbye to Brodie.
-Cody, Big E, and Amanda went back to the hotel to talk to Brodie Jr about his father's passing.
-The official cause of death was determined to be "idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis." The term "idiopathic" is used when the cause of a disease is not known. "Pulmonary fibrosis" is a scarring of the lungs. She is still awaiting a full autopsy report, which could provide additional insight.

December 30th (Brodie Lee Celebration of Life)
-No official service was held for Brodie, due to Covid-19.
-"AEW's celebration of life - that was his funeral."
-"The outpouring of love from the wrestling community has been unreal."
-She didn't want to watch the tribute video beforehand, so she saw it for the first time while she was in the ring. Her reponse to Jess Palombo, who produced it: "It was perfect, it was beautiful, and seriously you can go fuck yourself." (note that this was said with a laugh, as Amanda is someone who doesn't like to cry but that video 'broke her')
-"I get really, really fucking angry if I see anybody who's like, 'Oh, they're exploiting the family.' No, they're going above and beyond to let an 8-year old live his favorite thing in the world, and have his connection with his dad."

For full disclosure, Amanda was the one who asked to do the podcast, to hopefully clear the air and help provide some insight.

There's been talk of -1 doing a future podcast along with Preston Vance.

---

I'm still amazed that not one person in the wrestling community let anything leak, that's how respected Brodie was.

Jesus. That's super fucking rough. His son is really strong to go through all of this, especially right around Christmas, which is a special time for most children.

How shitty is it that he was "rejected by transplant doctors". I don't know how that works, but I wonder if he wasn't rejected if he would still be here.

Sepholio
01-29-2021, 08:08 AM
Had a family member get rejected for transplant before. Typically if they reject you itnis because the doctors honestly believe it wont save you or and that giving you the organ would be a waste when it could be given to someone else who can be saved.

Evil Vito
01-29-2021, 08:10 AM
From the Mayo Clinic website:

Risk of rejection
Your immune system defends your body against foreign substances. Even with the best possible match between you and the donor, your immune system will try to attack and reject your new lung or lungs. The risk of rejection is highest soon after the lung transplant and is reduced over time.

Your drug regimen after transplant will include medications to suppress your immune system (immunosuppressant medications) in an effort to prevent organ rejection. You'll likely take these anti-rejection drugs for the rest of your life.

---

I'm thinking they thought Brodie's condition was so dire with other unexplained health issues that they didn't feel there was a high confidence level that the transplant would've worked. Really scary how out of the blue this all seems to be. You can go at any time.

I'm still amazed that not one person in the wrestling community let anything leak, that's how respected Brodie was.

That was all incredibly tough to read. I have so much respect for Big E and Royce and Breeze. Not giving a shit who's on who's side. Just being there for a friend and a family in need. So good.

Also something of note. I know first hand about transplant lists. Every major organ has a long list for transplant. Imagine being a part of the group of doctors that have to say no to a potential recipient. On the outside, it seems cruel, but when you really look into it, these doctors have no choice but the be tasked with playing God.
