One thing that makes me think it's not Kurt Angle or Mick Foley is he said "Hall of Fame worthy" and they are both in the WWE Hall of Fame already... feels like they wouldn't word it that way maybe if it was them, but doesn't necessarily disqualify them

Wasn't on last night but holy fuck what a great episode that was. If I wasn't already planning on getting Revolution, that would've sold me.

That episode resembled a three ring circus in the very best way.

You like flippy lucha guys? We've got it. You want NWA/WCW nostalgia? Here's Sting and Tully fucking Blanchard. You want huge headline grabbing matches, have some Shaq. Ex-WWE guys? We've got them too. Here's a Joshi slugfest for good measure. Let's throw on a promo from Atsushi Onita to top it off.

I know wrestling has been quietly going insane for about five years now, but Tully Blanchard just wrestled Marko Stunt on the same show Shaq took a table bump and Atsushi Onita cut a promo hyping a deathmatch. And depending who the next big signing to be announced is, there's no guarantee that any of those things will end up being what this show is most remembered for. What a delight.

Khan also doubled down on Paul Wight's reveal on Wednesday's Dynamite about a "Hall of Fame worthy" signing announced this Sunday. Khan said it will not be the surprise in the ladder match and that it's a "major, huge, huge star in the world of wrestling: that will be signing a multi-year deal."

The way they’re hyping it up as a “huge, huge star”, it better be someone with decent star power or at the very least Mongo McMichael.

Tony Khan hyping up the signing some more:

Paul Wight told you that you’re not going to be the only one with these scoops around here anymore, and he’s gonna break some scoops too, and I’ve given him a big scoop. He told the world, and it’s true, that there’s going to be a big star signed with AEW. And he’s coming here, and that’s absolutely true what Paul said. This Sunday, a major star in the world of wrestling, a huge, huge star is going to come and sign a multi-year contract with AEW on Sunday at the pay-per-view. I can confirm what Paul said is true, and I’m not talking about the person in the ladder match. We have a great, fun sixth person in the ladder match, but the person who I’m saying is going to come and sign a multi-year contract with AEW, the person Paul referenced, that’s not the sixth person in the ladder match. Paul’s talking about a big surprise, and that’s no joke. What he said to you I can confirm is true.

I dont see how they can match the hype tbh. Anyone short of Punk and above might feel a bit hollow but the whole "Hall of fame worthy" has my disapointment radar going off.

RVD might be cool, Steiner or Angle are pretty solid Mehs from me frankly. Although Angle could be worthwhile as a figure I don't really want him to wrestle. Hes so far from the Anlge golden years I dont want to see it.

Emperor Smeat

If they tap into their partnerships, could be someone big from AAA since anyone notable from NJPW is ruled out because of their current New Japan Cup tournament stuff.

Psycho Clown did mention in a recent interview about how he wants to wrestle more in the US this year and he's one of the biggest name stars in Mexico these days and would fit as someone Hall of Fame worthy. He's someone similar to the level of a John Cena in Mexico.

That would still be a very anti-climatic announcement but on the flip side would potentially give AEW a huge boost for their Latino market.

xrodmuc316

I think Batista got thrown into it because Big Show said "At AEW Evolution" by mistake.

Batista has been saying he wanted one more match with HHH at Mania then he would retire since about 3 years before it even happened. I would put him at slightly above Cena chances, call it 0.025% for him.

Jordan
03-05-2021, 08:00 AM
I'm thinking it's Kota Ibushi, I read his NJFW contract expired on Fightful. Also was thinking Jay White. Perhaps they swerved us by sending him to Japan at the beginning of the year as a gift.

I've also herd Pat Mcafee's name bandied about but I'm not certain of his WWE contract status.

Mark Henry said he wanted one more match and he's close friends with Big Show. While that would be cool I wouldn't think it worthy of the hype.

Basically it has to be Lesnar, Punk or Batista to live up to the hype. Ibushi/White would go over well obviously but it wouldn't be the bombshell we are expecting.

Jay White makes sense because they can repackage him as Jay Wight the little brother of The G Paul Wight. Then they can team up against The Young Bucks and The Lucha Bro's in a wild 3 team rivalry for the Tag Belts. The Wight Bro"s.

Evil Vito
03-05-2021, 08:25 AM
I can't see it being Ibushi, he only finally got an IWGP Title run after he finally signed a contract there, can't imagine they'd have doubled down on him being the one to unify the belts if he was on the way out. Even with the new working relationship allowing the companies to share talent, I just don't see them giving that sort of rub to a guy if he's not under contract.

RVD and Angle would be huge disappointments. RVD is ok but past his prime and doesn't really bring anything interesting to the table, imo.

Angle was less than a shell of his old self and I have 0 interest in seeing him wrestle again. On top of that, to hype this as the biggest scoop ever and for Khan to hype thus signing up as a "major star" and "huge huge star", only for it to be washed up has beens who've already peaked and are running on empty would be a massive fucking letdown.

This could be their Road Warrior Animal in WCW circa 2001 as being a massive wet fart of a reveal if I'm remembering it correctly.

Not being facetious at all, but I would include Ryback in that. I would not consider him a letdown at all. Despite how WWE booked him, he was over as hell at certain points in his career. Damian Rey 2.0
03-05-2021, 08:05 PM
Bret can't really do anything to help the company. He was a never a good talker and. now even less so. He can't wrestle or even bump. Outside of doing one offs like he did presenting the belt, he's virtually useless as an on screen character.

I love Austin, but I can't see him going for 2 reasons. 1, he's got his broken skull podcast, which I'm assuming is popular and heavily backed by Vince. 2, he too can't go anymore. Sure seeing a stunner would be fun here and there, and he's undeniably entertaining, but what does he bring? They already have tons of former wrestlers getting on screen roles. Yes, Austin is bigger then all of them. But does he really bring anything if they can't get a match out of him? Would he really take a match after all theseyears when you know Vince has probably asked him countless times since 03? Would Vince let one of his biggest stars of all time walk?

It won't be the Rock. It's not as unlikely but I don't think it'll be Cena. Styles and Daniel Bryan are locked into deals. Maybe it's Lesnar but that would be a lot of money for a guy who doesn't work much, even when you consider how well AEW does keeping guys from wrestling every single show.

Punk is the biggest and most realistic name. But i have my doubts. I'm honestly stumped.

But hey, we're buzzing so they got that going for them.

Probably could have seen a peak higher than what they did for their debut show had the match been in the main event or AEW announced beforehand it was opening the show via how the early minutes went for numbers.

Bret can't really do anything to help the company. He was a never a good talker and. now even less so. He can't wrestle or even bump. Outside of doing one offs like he did presenting the belt, he's virtually useless as an on screen character.

He can do the one thing that is important to AEW better than anybody, and that's bury WWE at every chance.

Unless a miracle happened and Bret has been getting into unreal shape haha. Imagine?

Lmao isn't his head as delicate as an egg due to his stroke? If Bret could've bumped after his WCW days he would've prob gotten to kick the shit outta Shawn Michaels on his comeback run.

Bret likes Punk right?

If it’s Punk, he looks a bit daft for his Twitter comments. Not him denying it was him, I’d expect that. But when asked about what he thinks AEW should do he just said “they should just focus on who they already have”.

Would be stunned if it was him.

Maybe he says that and cuts a promo about focusing on who they had and noticed Omega staking claim as best in the world. Her should've just ignored it but I really hope and doubt and it is him.

It's gonna be Christian or Angle. I'll be disappointed but fine with it.

If it's RVD? nah, dawg...I wouldn't pay to see him at a middle school skating rink

Ryback would be alright but I'm sure the boys in the back might have hesitations cuz injuries

I was just thinking that earlier. Not quite on the same level but it's who's Cartman's mom, who killed JR, who shot Mr. Burns, is Sting in the NWO?!

So all of your examples were swerves at the end and the only one that wasn’t stupid was the Sting one. Not making this better.

For me, this is a defining moment in my AEW fandom. They are telling me to get my hopes up because the payoff will be great. If it is, they have my attention and loyalty. If it’s not, fuck this bullshit carny promotion.

They put these stakes on it so let’s see.

I think it would make Punk look like an idiot if it was him. He could have debuted in his home town at All Out, instead he shows up 18 months later in front of a limited crowd as Big Show's friend?

Austin could be the GM of Raw on Monday if he wanted to, and still sells a good amount of merch with WWE, has a TV show on NBC owned channel, and broken skull sessions on the Network. No way it is him.

Batista, I said earlier how he was talking about retiring for 3 years before his retirement match even happened. He has a very good Hollywood career, and at 52 im pretty sure I believe him when he says he is done.

Cena is too loyal, its his life mantra. He is also pretty much full Hollywood at this point as well.

Christian would be very interesting. I'm not sure if he has a legends contract or not, but considering WWE has done nothing with him since the Rumble, him not inking a new deal may be why.

Mark Henry is a realistic option, he said he is training for a match, and how incredible would it be watching him and Big Show be a tag team and no selling all the Young Bucks shitty spots?

Lesnar would be the perfect option as a big signing, but then what? He murders the whole roster for a year and a half? You think he is gonna want to do business with Mox or Jericho now just because it's a new company?

Angle is certainly jumping to the front of the line. Podcast with Conrad, check. Bashing WWE booking, check. Acting like Vince overlooked him instead of pushing him to the moon, check.

Ryback because he has been talking about joining AEW for like 2 years.

Maybe Cody will convince Ted Jr to come out of retirement. Unlike every other option, he is still under 40. Bonus if they can get pops to be his manager.

RVD talked a lot of shit about AEW during his last Impact run, he could be a good heel option.

Not really sure who else it realistically could be unless they are pulling somebody from New Japan.

Can probably scratch these two off that list since Ted DiBiase Jr. is currently dealing with some serious legal issues over fraud allegations involving Mississippi's state welfare system.

RVD's is currently working with WWE on a new documentary.

The whole family was being investigated but his brother was the first to get actual charges filed against him since he worked in the welfare department and embezzled money from it.
