Just watched the finale.

Damn at the subway scene. Brutal.

I am wondering where this goes too....

Still have questions too.... If Omni-Man was sent to Earth to weaken it for take-over, why did he stop for so long to have a wife/kid and only started to take action when his son got his powers? I wonder if it is like "standard procedure" or something... like they are also testing the viability of the race to breed new Viltrimites. Then when his son got his powers it was like "Yep, this is a good planet" and only then did he start.

Destor

i think thats exactly it. the timing was immediate

At the same time part of me wonders if it was unintentional. With their lives being so long, it is like the blink of an eye to wait for him. So the standard operation could very well be to infiltrate at first to understand the culture and planet.... but it could have been unplanned that he took a wife and had a son. But he told himself that he was still serving the empire by creating another Viltrumite, and then he would wait to see if his son got powers and when he did the game would be on.

But then in the end he couldn't go through with killing his son because he had changed from his time on the planet and the unplanned family. So he's now got an inner battle between loyalty to his planet and to his son, so he just Fs off into space to think.

This is also why it is so shocking that he has abandoned his post, and why nothing like this has happened before... because he did go "off script" with having a family.

I don't think he's the 1st Viltrumite to have a family. i think he's the first one to love. and perhaps its that he let his wife raise his son thats the issue. perhaps Invincible is the variance. the 1st Viltrumite that didnt side with the fatherland.

its fun to speculate regardless and the narrative theyve delivered is sooooooo strong.

Not quite sure how Omni Man thought that argument was going to sway his son to a hitherto unknown cause, though. "I love you mom like a pet, join me in conquering the planet" isn't exactly father-of-the-year material...

...but then, knocking his son's teeth out and flashing back to him being similarly toothless and hitting a little league home run showed that he isn't completely heartless.

However, I personally think he didn't so much "abandon" his post as he went to get backup. If he can't bring himself to kill his own son, he can find someone else to do it without question for the good of the mission.

A small part hopes he just pulled back to watch what his son will do. He invented a reason for his kid to step up and be the hero the world needs, even at the cost of his own reputation... which won't matter to anyone but those two in a couple hundred years.

the tear really got me

Me too, but it was also kinda darkly funny... considering everything else.

Overall, the only real complaint I have about the show is the pacing. It feels like it was rushed. Not rushed like Gen:LOCK where it feels like they forgot to explain stuff just to make sure they finished a full season, or rushed in a shitty way like the last season of GoT, but still tried to slide in a lot to try to help sway a green light for more seasons.

9/10 started watching again

Haven't read the comics so I don't know if things went that quickly in the comics (regarding reveals and showdowns)... but yeah, could be they were just trying to make sure they got those season renewals and now that they got them, the next season will breath a bit more.

Destor
05-03-2021, 01:07 AM
i think the pacing is very consistent.

look at ep 1. 4/5 of the ep is a standard super hero ep. that final 1/5 is balls out "wtf is going on." the season is structured that way as a whole too.

things move in a traditional way and then it ramps to 100. its the shows modus operandi.

Tom Guycott
05-03-2021, 05:34 AM
Yeah, consistently quick. It was like when I watched the first season of Being Human, and then saw the first season of the UK version. The entire first season here was done in about the first five episodes of the original. This felt kinda like the reverse: like there maybe could have been a couple more episodes worth of filler (I hate to phrase it that way, but I think you get what I mean). Part of why it felt like it was rushed is the sheer amount of deaths before you had time to give a shit about who's dying. I'm not even talking about the miscellaneous collateral damage either. It had sort of the opposite effect of "damn, this important person is dead" because they kept doing it to the point that it seemed like EVERYONE was potentially expendable and why should I care? Machine Head was fun for about 30 seconds and... oh, that's over. Even though he didn't even die, Darkblood getting banished seemed like a shit payoff to a potentially cool character. At one point, I thought that whole thing Robot was doing was an effort to copy Invincible because even the titular character is super expendable.

I haven't read the comics either, but there have apparently been *tweaks* to the story anyway, so I figure it will prob'ly move in a similar fashion to The Boys where this is/will be some "wait, that didn't happen" divergence or enough little changes to make this series its own continuity.

It's not exactly a bad thing, and I don't fault it for it. I'm the person who liked Ready Player One in spite of ALL THE BUTCHERING the film made to the story because, from the outside, I got why the changes were made. And I would have *loved* that movie in a vaccum, but having gone through the book first, I was a little... disappointed when comparing it only because I knew better. I don't want that for this, so I'm not even going to touch the comics.

i think thats deliberate though. Kirkman is applying what he did on Walking Dead to the superhero genre. by using death (and injury) in this manner his goal is to create a world that has stakes to the violence and for my money it works really well in making not only the action very tense but by making this series stand out as very unique title in the genre.

Destor
05-03-2021, 10:05 AM
its fair to say it leaves a lot on the table for some characters that otherwise would have been great to explore but i think what it adds has enough value to justify the method...and in true comic fashion death isnt pemenant in this world as we've seen. Abe Lincoln for instance.

I'm only using tags out of courtesy, I'm pretty sure the only people opining right now are the only ones who care and saw it already...

That's actually a perfect contrast, because at least in watching TWD after Glenn finds Rick, the point was interpersonal relationships, and the zombies were incidental. Even some of the shallower characters, you got to know a little in how they interacted with their group, both protagonists and antagonists.

In this, it was more like "This person is a hero. They're dead now. This person is a villain. They're dead now. This person is a love interest. This person is dead now." There was no agency to them other than plot piece. A majority of characters in this are acting in the same set dressing manner of Walking Dead's zombies. I don't really care that they're dead. And unless that's supposed to be some "oh, I see how Omni Man feels" moment, it (at least to me) has the opposite effect of stake raising. It lowers the stakes, because I'm not given a chance to give a single solitary shit about anyone for there to even be stakes.

Like, if at the beginning of The Boys, they started with Huey's date. We were supposed to give a shit about her in the last five minutes of her life. We saw how she interacted with our protag. We were able to connect with them as a couple and as individuals. Then we get to see why it was important when A-Train accidentally painted the sidewalk. And even there, A-Train stopped long enough for us to know it registered he did something. We have three people who have agency in the story... well, two people physically, but Robin being dead started the ensuing storyline dominoes falling. If this were done in Invincible, all of that would have been covered in about 8 seconds, Huey would have been run through as well, and A-Train prob'ly would have prob'ly kept running until he got to the fight with one of those alien invaders and been killed on the spot without a single shred of empathy for the three.

That's why I think the pace could have been a little slower. Not snail's pace slow, just enough time to let developments actually develop.

I found the animation really lacking. It was very reminiscent of cartoons from 2 decades ago. The plot was pretty predictable. The characters and relationships were really cliche. So much so that it felt like they just stole other characters and tweaked them slightly. I see alot of people saying that the fight scenes were amazing because of how gory they are but compared to some anime from the 80sand 90s it was just really lacking. The power levels were also really screwed up. The music was great and the voice acting was amazing. They really did good with that but without those two things this series would have been really sub par.

It follows it almost exactly. Many scenes are taken straight from the book, dialogue and all. Only divergences are that the machine head, Mars aliens, and cyborg monster story's happen after the invincible vs omni man fight. And there's a story before said fight that we haven't got in the show yet.
