Yay, I was able to get an early start on this one. I hope today finds you all well and healthy and what have you. Last week's game, F.E.A.R., sadly experienced the same issue as Condemned: Criminal Origins a few weeks prior. Namely, there was a hefty amount of people who sadly hadn't played it. I will reiterate that it's worth a look and I'll just leave it at that. Well, before I do that we have to determine its average score and place on our illustrious list determined by the people who did play it and rate it. I know it was suggested that perhaps it shouldn't be counted but it did get rated and it's a game like all the others so I don't think excluding it is going to work. Hey, I don't make the rules, I just work here. :shifty: Anyway, let's go to the leaderboard and see where F.E.A.R. ultimately stands....

Eh...middle of the road as it joins fellow PC powerhouse Diablo in the number 31 spot. I hope this will be the last overestimation I make when it comes to games in the pool. These are always more enjoyable when there's a bunch of you who have played the same title. Which raises the question of what will be the next title for this week. Let's go to the bowl and do that pull out thing....

...Presto! This week's game to rate is the title that made the name Kratos shake throughout the gaming universe, God of War on the PlayStation 2! I say PlayStation 2 because this is the original game not the similarly titled game from a few years ago. So what did you all think of this game? How much of an impact did it have on you, if any? Rate and vote and discuss and share and stay frosty! Until next week!

There were other titles in the genre that were a bit better from a pure gameplay standpoint, but it was still fun as hell. Add to that the incredible world design, Fun boss fights, and great set pieces and you get an easy 5 from me.

Easy 5. GoW is legendary.

Side note: f.e.a.r. tying with diablo is insane. No way it should ever be mentioned in the same breath as Diablo.

GoW1 did a lot to push the industry forward. its narrative presentation was unprecedented at the time. tight controls, huge set pieces and epic boss fights on top of said narrative make this a verrrrrry memorable game.

i gave it a 4 but in retrospect thats only because of how much better GoW 2018 was and thats not a fair standard at all.

Interestingly enough, it would seem David Jaffe, a key contributor to GoW, had his PSN account temporarily suspended for showing bugs in a game or something on YouTube. Ridiculous.

They stick some weird things in those terms and conditions.

It always drives me crazy nowadays when people see Quan Chi from Mortal Kombat and make the claim that he looks like Kratos. Uh, no. Quan Chi came first so Kratos would look like Quan Chi. The kicker being NEITHER OF THEM LOOK LIKE THE OTHER!!!

Gave it a 4. I loved it but I never finished it.

I played it and finished it for my friend/roommate who had picked it up and boy was he mad. I mean, pretty much everything works here. It set a template for other hack-'n-slash titles to follow. I mean, Dante's Inferno is almost beat for beat a God of War game. I never continued the series after the first one, although I hear good things. I guess I didn't get that engaged with the story or was interested in seeing more as I thought things wrapped up well enough. The only other real strike against it is that I HATE QUICKTIME EVENTS!

I'll take QTE over timed missions/stages in any game, any day.

You raise an interesting dilemma...

I'm also pro QTE. Hate the trend is going the other way and QTE are fading away as a gameplay element. They were basically playable cutscenes. I much preferred having to press a few buttons during that 10 second attack animation than just sitting back watching it.

Edit: not GoW related but this reminded me of the dance sequence from FF7:R. One of the best designed QTEs ever imo. Imagine just having to watch that as a standard cutscene.

Also timed missions super suck. I get why they are a thing and I get why people like them. But I prefer to take my time and thoroughly explore things. Time limits actively hinder what I enjoy most about gaming.

Uhg, another edit: Feel like I should say that timed missions are ok every once in a while when the timer is less about arbitrarily limiting your time for no reason and more about conveying a sense of urgency. Things along the lines of a bomb being armed and you have 10 minutes to escape the blast radius. Those are perfectly fine as long as they aren't overused. Also can be ok in certain sidescrolling platformers where the entire point of the game is to be as challenging as possible and the timer is used to actively increase the challenge. I can think of a lot of challenging platformers that would be an absolute cakewalk if there wasn't a timer or some kind of instant death chasing you through the level forcing you to move at a certain pace.
