Welcome one and all to another Tuesday morning. This certainly can only mean one thing and that one thing is kicking off another week of Rate the Game! We've actually got a couple of milestones here. It's a veritable orgy going on in that number 19 spot as Donkey Kong Country 2, with it's average 4.0 rating, helps create the first ever six-way tie! Good Lord, how many more games are we going to fit in that group? Is this week's game going to be one of them? Time to see what it is. Bring on the bowl....

After a fun little detour in the platformer genre we're back to the comforting atmosphere of survival horror and gunplay. This week we tackle the title credited with changing up the franchise, Resident Evil 4! It got a lot of praise when it first came out and changed up the formula but how much love do you think it deserves? Is it a worthy installment to the Resident Evil legacy or does it earn your ire and venom? Let's all vote and rate and discuss and share as inch ever closer to the end of this ride. Until next week....

Solid 4 in my opinion. Incredibly fun game with good characters, atmosphere and game mechanics.
My problem is that the latter portion once you get out of the village gets a little stale, but the fun factor of the gameplay outweighs that.
I think it could have been a MUCH better game if they actually made it more of a Resident Evil game instead of what they did and where the Resident Evil series started to go south. Like I've often said, Resident Evil 4 is an outstanding fantastic game, but a poor Resident Evil.

Really wish Capcom would finish the original Resident Evil 4, now referred to by fans as Resident Evil 3.5. The game was apparently almost done but Capcom got spooked by poor sales of ReMake and decided to go with a new direction for Resident Evil.

Still a great game, could've been so much more however.

Never heard of that Resident Evil 3.5 thing. I imagine the gameplay was more similar to the classic entries?

I am surprised so many people haven't played it.
Like am I in some sort of other dimension, lmao. I can understand if it was Code Veronica or Zero or one of the older games, but Resi 4 is the most known/loved of the franchise...

When it comes to franchises and deciding which games to pick from their library I always try to pick the ones that are the most well-known. The first is always a no-brainer because it's what kickstarts the whole thing, obviously, but as far as other titles it's about narrowing down the ones that got the most buzz. Resident Evil 4 was probably the most high-profile one in that period leading up to Resident Evil 6 so I felt like it should be part of the new pool. I had a friend who played it religiously when it released on the Wii and was all about it even though he'd never played a Resident Evil game prior or since, come to think of it. I know he owned Resident Evil 5 but I don't think he ever touched it.

Oh, and before I forget I might as well lock in my 4 vote for this one. As awesome as a Jill and Claire sandwich would be, this one doesn't quite reach near perfection. I do have to credit it, though, for switching things up in a series that was quite entrenched in the survival horror gameplay style of old. Did it end up being for the better? Hard to really say but unlike when its fellow rival franchise, Silent Hill, changed things up after The Room, Resident Evil 4 actually produced a quality experience and kept things true to the lore while expanding upon it. Mixed bag but still top notch in my book.

Never been able to really get into Survival Horror or Horror games.

RE4 may have screwed the pooch by departing from the survival horror genre that later nearly killed the franchise but RE4 was still a very great game. story was great for the time. set pieces were the best the medium had ever seen. tons of content. it was a goat tier game when it released, it pushed the industry forward. 5.

Really wish there was a 4.5 vote option. RE4 is such an amazing game but it isn't perfect. Can't justify a 5 but I would give it a 4.75 with ease.

One of my friend's co-workers was obsessed with the GameCube version, which was the first console I ever owned new my entire life - I had bought Genesis, N64, Saturn and Dreamcast all long after their lifetimes - anyway...yeah. He would talk it up to me all the time, but I just wasn't interested.

Releasing it for the Gamecube primarily seemed like an odd decision at the time but I can absolutely understand why looking back. That thing needed all the help it could get.

How come it needed help and how did the Gamecube help it?

No, no, the Gamecube needed the help. It was a fine system but competing with the PlayStation 2 was rough. Getting an exclusive like Resident Evil 4 seemed like a good idea to give it a boost.

Almost. The Gamecube got it in January of 2005. The PlayStation 2 got it in October the same year.

This is indeed true. It just seemed like the Gamecube had to fight a lot harder for the market share.

Yeah, you're right but nonetheless I picked one up at launch nearly 20 years ago. Got it with NBA Courtside 2002 , my first introduction to the series. Sucks that Left Field shut down shortly thereafter, because I remember a bunch of hype being built up for a sequel.
