Wouldn’t surprise me if this actually hurts AEW. TK’s booking has already killed Danielson’s drawing power (he’s often in the lowest rated segments of the show).

AEW doesn’t understand why Bryan Danielson/Daniel Bryan was so over in 2012/2013/2014. It wasn’t just because he’s an amazing technical wrestler bell-to-bell. Yes, even the most flippant of marks can see that. It was how he pieced it all together to generate a charisma that connected him to audiences all over the world. It was his selling. It was his natural quirkiness. It was him being comparatively small compared to a lot of his opponents. It was a little bit luck too.

People loved the Daniel Bryan package and what it meant. No, you can’t replicate it exactly. But to think the secret to getting the most out of this guy is to have him work free matches that Meltzer gives five snowflakes to is missing so much of the story. Danielson got over without those sort of accolades (even though most agree Meltzer’s ratings are bullshit). He was more over without a five star match than with one (I’m assuming Meltzer has started handing them to him now he’s with AEW).

Bryan might be his own worst enemy with this stuff too. He seems like the guy who constantly wants to put others over and just wrestle for funsies, and not necessarily in the way that is going to generate the most interest. And that is why you need a booker who knows what the fuck they’re doing.

None of this actually indicates that it was a good idea in the first place though. Boos can be the intended result, but still be a counterproductive direction. We’ll be able to monitor this pretty effectively by whether people tune in or out after this match though.

As a general rule, I find the “it worked for the people in the building” argument less and less persuasive. In too many cases the number of people in the building is about the number of people you can get. They’re the captive audience willing to go along with almost anything. There’s a wider audience companies like AEW should be appealing to that they are missing.

Got to be honest as an AEW fan, they haven't gotten anything new out of Danielson yet. Like, I feel like everything I know is because of WWE and ROH but he hasn't "evolved his character" that much like Jericho does every few years.

Punk is a bit more personal with the audience and his path so far feels a bit better than Danielson. Both though haven't been booked excellently. It's not all about the matches they've had though they both have been in with some no-names that didn't really matter beyond record padding. It's more about the angles. They have had lots of angles but for Danielson in particular they don't stick out as much.

I care more about Mox, MJF, Darby/Sting, FTR, Death Triangle, The Elite and Matt Hardy more than Danielson right now.

I miss TV title 15 minute time limits that regularly went the distance. Especially with a heel champion. That’s one situation where time limits can definitely be over-used and it’s perfectly fine because “beating the clock” becomes part of the story.

Agreed. If this was about making Page, a clean victory would have been more impressive. Or he could have been challenging and pushed Danielson to the limit. It does feel like Destor’s lazy booking scenario.

It was a great build for the next encounter between the two, when Hangman hit his finish and we all knew that he was about to get the clean win but the bell rings and the time is up. I was really into it and yelled out "NO!". It was a fun brief moment of childlike fandom for me.

i feel like that was the exact issue i had with the match. at the go home it was hangman he couldnt get i done. instead it should have been Danielson with hangman taking everything he had to offer unable to get i done. you have an hour to beat the champ not the other way around. felt like looking ay a sunrise from the wrong side.

The only thing worse than 50/50 booking is 0/0 booking when it is clearly being done just to extend the fued. It is even worse the way they booked it to Destor's point. So the heel challenger is going to want a rematch because "haha you couldnt beat me in time so give yourself another chance to beat me!!!" Its lazy and illogical.

If they really want to go down this road, they should book 2 more matches that end with kicks to the balls ala Styles/Nakamura.

After Danielson won the tournament, wasn’t one of Page’s opening salvos that he beat Omega within the time limit when Danielson couldn’t? If that whole thing was supposed to get Page over, then the struggling to beat someone in time story doesn’t fit the tone. If Page were challenging? Sure.

I also saw a lot of people who predicted the outcome when they saw the match placement on the show. They signposted it. I also saw someone point out that they introduced the idea for judges for this sort of event, but obviously it’s just inconvenient for them to be there with Page looking strong at the end.

The booking in this company is far from air-tight.
