Another Wednesday where I wake up and remember how great it feels to be a fan of the best damn professional wrestling company on the planet!

I'm not into Best Friends, the women's 6-man, or Varsity Blondes. But I do love Mox and I love Christian Cage, hopefully he wrestles in a turtleneck. Brody King vs Darby Allin should be really good.

* Best Friends against Mox & Yuta should bite. Trent is the most talented guy in there, but he’s so goofy and mid-card at this point. Wasn’t he teaming with Rocky Romero a few weeks back? At least Orange Cassidy & Trent would be an “over” team in the wrong way with this audience. No drama in the outcome here. Moxley is AEW Champ.

* The six-woman tag lacks any drama. The face girls are there to be chum for Jade’s streak. The Baddies will win and then there will probably be some angle to set up Jade vs. Athena. There’s no charisma in Athena. Their women’s division is horrible.

* They’ve somehow taken my interest in Brian Pillman, Jr. and reversed it. AEW fans defend it by saying that BPJ is not that good, but it’s AEW’s booking. He’s a guy that needs to be in a different promotion. Christian is amazing, but it’s jumped the shark into MJF wannabe territory. No drama as to the outcome, unless Matt Hardy and/or Jungle Boy fuck over Christian in his first match, which would be LolAEW.

* Brody King sucks. Darby Allin was a guy that I would admit AEW did pretty well with booking up very consistently a few months ago. They’ve lost their teeth on that one. This doesn’t matter.

* Jericho is a hack now. Wtf is this gimmick? The violence will probably sadly attract white men in that 18-49 demo, which Meltzer will use to say that AEW is in touch. It would be fitting if no one gave a shit about this shit though.

Their special event branding still gives them a little boost, but there does seem to be diminishing returns. Dynamite didn’t crack 1 million last week and I don’t think Rampage got much out of it. This show suffers from a big thing that Rampage suffers from too — very obvious outcomes without the good booking to make those outcomes feel particularly earned.

It should crack 1 million with the violent gimmick and Mox wrestling, but it’s not because they’ve figured their own product out.

I do get wanting to have Mox wrestle every week. He probably wants to, and I love it. But even still without doing rematches there are so many matches they could have that would be interesting and either help build up Mox in non-title matches or to have more high stakes tag matches for his exhibitions. This match vs best friends just makes no sense. Unless for whatever reason they are booking a TV Championship match with Moxley against OC, which okay if that's what they are doing but come on please don't do that.

It's so absurd to say it but AEW could really utilize their large roster better with a focused Trio's division. I don't know... maybe just use the ROH Six Man Belts and have those titles float, and seriously and obviously we don't need more titles, it's just there are so many great trios teams in AEW, or potetial trio's teams. Could be good.

General reaction to the main event and aftermath is about as negative as I've ever seen for an AEW show. Even on the sub-Reddit which rarely criticizes the booking.

Just an absolute trainwreck of a match, which was probably inevitable with the stipulations. No Sammy and Tay in the shark cage/Ruby controlling the cage all made it very obvious from the jump that there was gonna be an overbooked finish. BCC/JAS had a damn Blood and Guts match which by all rights should be the be-all, end-all for a feud yet they're still out there brawling again. And, of course, Jericho going over in the supposed blowoff.

Jericho seems like someone self-conscious enough about bad feedback that he'll try to lobby Khan behind the scenes for one final match with Eddie. But All Out is still another 6 weeks out and that's a long way to keep dragging this out.

I think the real reason Jericho went over and the stables are still at war is so that this can be segued into Jericho/Mox, with an eye towards having a backup plan in place in case Punk isn't cleared.

While Jericho would be a "safe" name to chuck into a PPV main in a time when people are out, I personally would have some challenges with plucking down $50 for a Jericho-headlined PPV in 2022. Especially for a PPV title match they've already done before. Not to say I wouldn't order the show but the undercard would need to carry my interest to get me to do so. Christian/Jungle Boy is at least a good start.

Of course if Punk returns then it'll obviously be Punk/Mox and I guess any Mox/Jericho contingency plan could be a Dynamite main, which would work for me.

I do think the PPV schedule has something to do it and that Khan does think you can "just keep rolling" but I don't agree with that approach. I feel like when you only have 4 PPVs a year, there should be an incentive to keep things fresh.

They've done Eddie and Jericho at 2 PPVs now - once solo and once as part of a big team match. That's fine. But since then they've done another bigass team match on TV and now another singles match. And the latest match was a clusterfuck. Why would I want to see them wrestle again on PPV? I've had my fill of this.

Plus AEW does at least one big Dynamite per month when there isn't a PPV. Do a blowoff there if you need to. You don't have to find ways to artificially stretch a story to the next PPV when you've told all you can with the story. At some point you gotta Mo Vaughn.

I’m not interested in seeing Kingston v Jericho anymore. It’s hard its run. Jericho wins. That’s fine. Fuel him up for a big TV match against Moxley for the belt in a few weeks and call it a day and move on.

Main event was a disaster on so many fronts. Im going to say it again I just cant buy into Eddie. Reminds me of a drunk uncle at a BBQ when he promos and is in no way intimidating or smooth in ring. I like his suplex, thats about it so my hopes for and interest in this match were pretty low anyway.

I dont want JB and Lucha back together, feels rushed given they like to tell a long story. Should have let Lucha slowly build some resentment to Christians shenanigans then turn back if your dead set on it. If he goes back to coming out with JB thats a miss in my books. If he kinda floats around both of them and doesnt take a side as such I can live with that.

There are benefits to doing more PPVs. Beyond increasing your profit margin, you can also get people conditioned to spending money on your product, which builds warm pathways in fans’ brains. It can also strengthen television by giving it a focus in and out of these special events.

That being said, there are downsides too. Buyrates in general might drop, which could give the appearance of the product cooling and shine a light on the false context people like Dave Meltzer try to throw AEW’s way (better performing product than ECW, which just isn’t true). And look at how TK books the TNT specials. Look at their PPVs when there are only 4 or 5. Adding more is probably going to make everything more shit.

In theory, a product with a steadier hand would do better with monthly specials.

I didn’t keep track of whowas and wasn’t injured, but I put together a card for “Fight for the Fallen” or “FyterFest” which could have been their PPV after Forbidden Door. You could have done BCC vs. JAS in a War Games main event just fine. Christian Cage or Luchasaurus vs. Jungle Boy or even someone like Matt Hardy should JB be out. It’s not hard to put together a more captivating card than what they ultimately end up doing. I’ll slap one together for an August PPV (turns out our cards are very similar):

* Jon Moxley defends the AEW World Title against Miro. Story is simple: Miro joins Team Taz because he wants backup in becoming God’s Chosen Champion. He can talk shit about Danielson being injured stemming from Full Gear. God has removed him from the picture, he will now do the same to Moxley. He can bring in CJ Perry to be God’s Blessing from Heaven in his corner. Miro can see CJ and Hook exchanging looks, however…

* Will Hobbs vs. Claudio Castagnoli. Claudio might be a guy who can get a good showing out of Hobbs. You could make this for the ROH World Title if you absolutely have to.

* Ricky Starks vs. Wheeler Yuta - Yuta beats Starks for the FTW Title, because I’m playing their game where they want Yuta to be something. Starks beats Yuta for the ROH Pure Title. He starts calling it the “ROH World Pure Title.” Starks is going back for his FTW Title here. I thought about making this a Ladder Match, but it’s really not necessary.

* The Young Bucks vs. FTR can have their rubber match. Basically books itself at this point.

* The Gunn Club vs. The Acclaimed for the AEW Tag Team Championship. Basically hobbled together. Lee & Swerve suck. The Gunn Clun can cheat them out of the belts on a Rampage or something. This feud has got more going on than just about any tag thing. Put the belts on The Ass Boys and let them go against The Acclaimed. Scorpio Sky & Ethan Page can be watching from the side. Refocus that tag division. You can put Paul Wight with The Acclaimed, since he’s still a bigger TV star than almost anyone in the promotion, and he can cancel out Billy Gunn here.

* Thunder Rosa vs. Britt Baker. Not the most captivating match, but I suppose given their history you can throw a stipulation in. The goal here is to get the belt back on Britt Baker in time for a unification match at All Out.

* Jade Cargill vs. Athena would be for the TBS Title and just to keep Jade strong as she heads to the big match with Britt Baker.

* Luchasaurus vs. Jungle Boy. If Jungle Boy wins he gets Christian Cage. This positions the fans behind Jungle Boy. Luchasaurus could win this match and put more blockers up in front of JB, or there could be a DQ ending where Christian wants the match “now” and beats the piss out of JB.

* PAC vs. Rey Fenix can open the show for the All-Atlantic Championship. They can just go out there and do their quick-paced stuff. They’re two of the best at it.

* Since he should probably be on PPV, you can have Wardlow defend the TNT Title against Chris Jericho and hope that working with Jericho doesn’t drag Wardlow down. The story can be that Sammy wants the TNT Title back. Wardlow powerbombs him into oblivion and Jericho feels that his group is slighted. With the TBS Title going into the Women’s Title, you can do the same with the TNT Title and the World Title, giving Jericho an ulterior motive for going after it.

*Darby Allin is in this program with that fucking idiot faction, I guess. Throw him into a match with Malakai Black. If Sting is cleared, The House of Black can face Darby, Sting and Adam Page…because, I dunno. Maybe two of the pillars teaming together could be a thing?

That’s 11 matches. I wanted to keep it to 9, but hey, 11 can work. You’ve got a little bit of something for everyone and things progress. And there is a bit of a cogency to the programs. Mox/Miro, Claudio/Hobbs and Wheeler/Starks all center around the same overarching program with their own personal flare involved in both. The tag team division stuff has things going on. The women are getting a more deliberate focus. And you’ve got Christian and Sting & Darby in their own personal programs.

Going over it, I’d probably have Andrade challenge PAC for the All-Atlantic Championship coming off the Ric Flair tag team. You might be able to get away with Flair appearing in Andrade’s corner for the match. It would make sense for Andrade to want the All-Atlantic belt.

Fenix can team with his brother and beat Lee & Swerve on the pre-show and then Swerve can kick the dead weight to curb and move into some sort of singles program.
