View Full Version : Standing and waiting to be chopped

Why in the fuck is this a thing? Worst of all, why is Brian Danielson of all people the worst offender? Fuck--I remember everyone raving about his match with Suzuki, but it was 10 minutes of them staring at each other and laying in cooperative chops. I had to turn the damned thing off.
Maybe every once in a while it'd make sense to wait to be chopped like a game of chicken. But every match? Honestly, what the hell?
What bothers me most is that it's a matter of treating it like a contested back and forth instead of standing and waiting. For instance, Sheamus vs Gunther did it right in their match.
Is there any way to stop this bullshit? Or is this wrestling now?

AEW just had another match like this recently. Eddie Kingston and someone. It was kinda "hey we're gonna chop the fuck out of each other" but also it looked *too* forced.

lol it made me think of Ken Shamrock standing there and saying "slap me" while the camera was right on his face

From a storyline perspective, I don't think it's too unrealistic for two guys fighting to get into a pissing contest about who could cave the other into oblivion with their chops first. It's a machismo thing.
The crowd seems to always get into it, it's a reliably easy way to engage the crowd. But when I see it happening multiple times on the same shows it shows there's zero communication between any of the talent or agents. Spots like that really shouldn't be done more than once per night.

Time to start the competitive slapping division.

Once in a while instead of once per night could work better. The machismo thing only holds so much weight because you’re trying to win matches. Seeing that happen all the time distracts from that.
Also, fans love chanting What, so I don’t always base my judgement of what’s good on their approval, especially given AEW’s niche base.

Very fair, but I also think from a performer's standpoint, they want to do what is going to appease the audience they have.

Thank you! Danielson is one of my all-time favorites and I’ve enjoyed Suzuki in the past, but Danielson/Suzuki was woefully bad. I also had to turn it off. It just plays like bad comedy. There was a spot where they were trading blows and Danielson was like “hit me bro” and Suzuki did and he went down like a sack of potatoes.
I don’t think it comes off as “tough” as they think it does. Looks kind of desperate and misanthropic. The goal is to win, and I think a real bad-ass would be more weary of what a lucky blow can do to you, so wouldn’t be courting that fate.
It’s definitely what wrestling is now.

Say what? Have you ever seen a fight where anyone decided to have a chop off in the middle? Yeah, nobody else has either. And if it has happened you can guarantee at least one of the participants was black out wasted and didn't know what was going on.
I love you but saying the stand and chop dance isn't unrealistic is pretty comical bro.

All the more reason we need drugs back in wrestling.
“Why are these two guys standing and letting each other chop them? This is fake and stupid.”
“They’re both on cocaine, meth, heroine, weed, Jack Daniels, Adderall, ecstasy, OxyContin, bath salts, Tide pods and Mountain Dew.”
“Oh. This is now real and awesome.”

Maybe I phrased it poorly. Not something you'd do in an IRL fight but if I'm pretending wrestling is a real sport filled with a bunch of cocky pricks who want to show who's the toughest, I could see where stuff like this happens.
Of course if the end goal is just "win the fucking match" it makes no sense, but that's 90% of wrestling at this point.

This is comedy. How can you not laugh at it?
That the crowd is getting up for it is exactly why you shouldn’t play for the audience in the room. More so than ever they’re a faulty gauge as to what actually has appeal.

The question is was it earned. We've seen this in profights so its not like its something that doesnt occur in combat sports. The audience needs to believe its a pissing contest between two guys who are getting extra heated and buy into it. If the do its all good. If its a random spot you do every night on free tv its shit.

That’s kinda what I was getting at with the game of chicken. But it really has to be special and earned—and I’ve yet to see it earned, even by Danielson.

Even in ufc, the stand and trade isn’t so contrived. Yes there’s an agreement to wing punches, but—other than on maybe very rare occurrences—is one guy waiting for the other guy to punch him with his chin out. It’s just throwing caution to the wind where they are going back and forth. I can recall a brawl or two where there’s a “bring it” moment, but that ends after one punch lands because they don’t want to get smashed clean in the jaw anymore.

Even Frye and Takayama were staying in the pocket with the intent to finish the fight. They were furiously trading licks trying to knock the other guy out. They weren’t hitting a still target only to become a still targe themselves and wait to get it.

I remember one of the things Shibata did that I can still like (I used to like the stiff headbutts until he ended his career with them) is he would take an Indy kick, get pissed off, then start work back to his feet, daring his opponent to kick him. When he got back to his feet, one more dare. He'd catch the leg and knock the piss out of them.
Also, the best pissing match is Ishii and Makabe, just lariating each other like god damned Rams.
As for actual chop wars, it was only done well one time...
