I was kind of hoping the ending of aftermath combined with the "1" indicated that this would be about the very first mortal kombat tournament with the great Kung Lao. Given the long lived nature of some characters you could have returning fighters while expanding on that oft referenced but little known era from the lore.

Isn't the case, but I'm still looking forward to where they take things.

Hopefully this time the retelling goes along a lot better than what happened with Mortal Kombat 9's story retelling that boiled down to Raiden being a giant dumbass over his continued mistakes and bad decisions throughout it.

If there was a video game version of Sideshow Bob continually stepping on rakes in a field, Raiden in MK9 would be it.

This idea has always intrigued me. For starters, it'd be nice to once again get a game that's about the actual God damn Mortal Kombat tournament, like the original and part of the reboot title. Second, that's an area of the lore that hasn't really been fleshed out and could be ripe for the picking. Who else did the Great Kung Lao fight alongside? How was the meeting between Shang Tsung and Shao Kahn like? How far back does something like the Black Dragon go, if at all? What did the realms look like in those days? You're talking about a 500 year difference so there's plenty of room for exploration. The only drawbacks I can see coming from this idea is that certain popular characters like Scorpion can't be part of it. MAYBE a version of Sub-Zero with the explanation that it's some kind of ancestor, seeing as how the powers are supposed to be part of a lineage?

It's an interesting concept. I know the Conquest television show was sort of doing this, but it was done during a time when a lot of knowns from today were, well, unknown. Thus you got shit like Noob Saibot popping up from ooze or whatever the fuck.

You couldn't have scorpion, but you could have a similar entity with fire powers. Similarly, you could have a shirai ryu clan member in the game to use the chain spear stuff.

I honestly dont think these games compete with one another all that much. The reason MK is a sales juggernaut is because of the chracters, story, and gore. If it happens to be a good fighter thats just a plus. MK is off doing its own thing. If MK competes with any game in sales its Tekken.

In any case their previous sales are the real competition:

MK11 - 12 million +

Tekken 7 - 10 million +

SF 5 - 6 Million +

SF 6 i think will easily outsell its predecessor. 5 was a console exclusive and the others werent (although the xbone was a sales failure in its own right so its not much of a factor.) 5 was profitable due to post launch monetizing and i dont think 6 will need it (but it will do it.) All 3 though sold outrageously well and topping their last entries is gojng to be tough as they were all the best selling games of their franchises save SF5 that essentially tied SF2.

Gotta be honest it seems pointless to me having an assist system when it's not a tag game. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with MK1 coming out relatively quickly after MK11, as if to catch the anniversary, and they didn't have time to make these extras fully playable.

Even the presentation is less cinematic in the intros, fatalities, and victory animations - all accounting for the assist character, like a tag fighting game would.

Im pretty excited for this game, but i always play the mortal kombat games to completion.

I played the stress test. The graphics are great, but it is waaaay different than playing MK11. I really got good at MK11, and the button configuration for amplifying specials, and the fact that its now the same as the block button as well as needing to amplify it as you throw the special gave me a bunch of hiccups while playing. The kameo system was decent, but there is so much anticipation when trying to incorporate them, that they almost never hit when i wanted them to and usually just ate hits so my main didnt.

The gameplay was super fast in some aspects and slow in others. I noticed that crouching and poking at the opponent had very slow recovery, but anything in the air is split second on reaction. To follow up a launcher with an air combo, you pretty much need to be jumping before the launcher hits.

Just growing pains to get used to as I am so used to MK11 mechanics that are almost opposite.

For those interested, the game won't support cross-play at launch but it is something being planned as a post-launch update for it at some point in the future.

Really, though, there are some great callbacks to moments in previous games if you keep your eyes peeled. Although, whoever made the decision to cast Megan Fox needs to be fired.

Not 100 % but pretty sure Anthony Starr isn't voicing Homelander in the game. Paused it on the voice credits and he isn't listed but both John Cena and J.K Simmons are.

Terrible celebrity acting aside, I'm really enjoying it so far. Really liking the feel. Only been doing the story but so far I really like how Raiden feels. Giving him more of shaolin kung fu style mixed with the lightning powers is so cool.

Also this game is beautiful. Easily the best looking fighting game ever made.

Finished the story. Pretty good, all told. Whole thing is definitely a love letter to the ps2 era games. Final act is a lot of fun.

Only one real sore spot
No big super boss. It's just shang and quan chi.

Just started getting into invasion and I can tell I'm going to spend a lot of time in it. All those seasonal skins look sick.
