Did you know the red tag belt Sami Zayn is currently holding is the same tag team championship that the legendary Dough Basham once held.

I strongly recommend some classic OVW to people. Smart, logical booking. Shows you that the formula can work. The guys down there were really good.

Dough Basham as OVW Heavyweight Champion would sell out the O2 in a minute. Just imagine Basham and Eugene in a 2/3 falls match in 2023  A man can dream haha

How can we ever forget Dough Basham participating in a fatal 4 way tag match at WM XX

If it wasn't for backstage politicking, Dough Basham would've gone on to win the tag belts at WM XX

I heard also Dough was scheduled to answer the John Cena U.S Title open challenge and was scheduled to defeat Cena with five moves.

That’s not even the shtick, Helmsphere. It’s supposed to be about how underrated he is. He SHOULD have done, but didn’t get a chance.

Did you know…when Dough Basham was tag champ he once sold his right side of the body instead of the left because he had so much appreciation for the Japanese puroresu style.

Doug could of been Hardcore Champion, or 24/7 champion but he never got the chance.

Dough could of sold out Madison Square Garden with Dennis Stamp, but Dough never got the chance and Dannis wasn't booked.

And of course, in Canada the whole thing's backwards!

Mr. Nerfect
07-04-2023, 12:32 PM
There’s a really good Triple Threat from OVW between Basham, The Damaja and Nick Dinsmore. It’s a great example of two guys working heel to use the gimmick of the match to get the babyface over. It comes off as very choreographed (in my opinion), but compared to modern dance routines where everyone gets their shit in regardless of alignment, and the one guy on the outside trope is beaten into the ground — it’s quite refreshing.

I feel like you're getting your facts backwards but I'll play the game.

Doug Basham had a career full of matches that were memorable and made me want to invest in his career.

After receiving 5-star Sumo Hall Meltzer ratings, Basham and Dinsmore had a very public falling out. Once they graduated from OVW to the main roster, they were presented on separate rosters as their egos wouldn't let them coexist on the same brand.

Dough Basham? That could have been a thing, a wrestler who is called "as soft as dough" and constantly has other wrestlers grabbing him and pulling on his skin.

Although if I booked Doug Basham back in the day I would have him "Bash" all the wrestlers. Have Doug Basham come out in the middle of a match and just talk trash about the work ethic of the guys in the ring.
"Look at these two! Who thought these two should have a match? " "These moves are pathetic!" "Boring!" "Zero out of 10 stars" "Is that the only move these guys know?" "Why dont you do another sleeper hold, haven't seen that before"
And the commentary team would say, "Doug is BASHING another match!".

Basham would be announced as, "From the internet, DOUG BASH'EM!".

After a PPV,

"You know, last nights big show, the pay per view was absolutely TERRIBLE. The opening match was so boring I would've fell asleep if I wasn't in it! You call that a main event? I counted only 3 different moves during that whole snoozefest, you guys never been in OVW haven't you? Because you might've learned more than two moves. "

After winning a match, Doug Basham would also "bash" his opponent,
"That was the worst opponent I've ever had! Trying to do your finisher when I wasn't even gassed? Who didn't see that reversal coming? And the referee? Getting knocked down by Michael Cole's fart while I was getting my eyes poked? What a joke! This match was easily a 9...out of a HUNDRED AND EIGHT!".

"The champ is here? More like the LUNESTA is here! The game? I got a game more exciting than this, its called stay awake. Yeah, You know how you play that game? You watch a different match! Oh yeah, why don't we have another unstoppable force versus the immovable object match, yeah, we haven't had enough of those! "

Doug's catchphrase would be, "Beat 'em and Bash'em".

Then you can have a storyline where there is a match where if Doug Basham loses, he is not allowed to talk anymore. Its called the STFU match. Basham loses and is not allowed to talk or he gets fired, so there is a storyline where Doug Basham learns sign language and continues to trash talk matches using sign language. You could have another wrestler injure Doug's hand so he can't use sign language anymore so there is a storyline where Doug tries to learn telepathy to directly beam negative commentary and thoughts about matches to other wrestlers and the audience.

Did you know one of the reasons why Hogan quit Smackdown in the early '00s was in part because he was intimidated by rising talents such as Dough Basham. His implementation of the leg drop made him lose his marbles backstage.

Considering how close John Cena and Dough Basham were back in the day, I have no doubt in my mind that the hustle, loyalty and respect that Cena yammers on about was something that came from the former OVW Heavyweight Champion.

One of the reasons why Shaniqua had to quit WWE was in part due to her crush on Dough Basham since she was a married woman. She’d go on to return to the world of professional wrestling and go on to have a 60-match undefeated streak. She dedicated her championship victory to the man who made her truly believe in herself, the great Dough Basham!

This might be something that nobody who watched the WWE during the "Ruthless Aggression" era would've expected just based on how easily replaceable Doug Basham was when he was on the main roster. However, first of all you need to remember that the WWE did have developmental territories before NXT and one of them was OVW which was the territory that gave the company a number of top stars. Unfortunately though a lot of the talent that called OVW home never was able to catch on within the ranks of main roster WWE for one reason or another and one of those names was Doug Basham.

https://www.wrestlingexpress.net/uploads/2/4/6/0/2460325/maxresdefault_29_orig.jpg

During his time down OVW the man once known as The Machine would spend time as both the top heel and top face in the company. This all would change though when as Jim Cornette said in an interview "One night my top heel came in the door and he was bald." As the story goes they had him shave his head to see what he would look like bald before he came up the main roster mind you at that point Doug had a full head of hair. Just think about this in OVW they had Doug fighting under mask against the likes of Nick Dinsmore, Rob Conway, and Danny Basham trying to spoil the opportunities these good guys were getting within the WWE as far as tryouts and other opportunities go. The main layer of this angle was Doug had a falling out with his uncle Danny Davis and left wrestling only to return on the mask after becoming spiteful of those mentioned above. Now compare this to his first storyline on the main roster where he and Danny had an S & M gimmick with Linda Miles as their handler.

https://www.wrestlingexpress.net/uploads/2/4/6/0/2460325/k_9_orig.png

Overall the Basham Brothers were a solid tag team and among the best in the division during the weakest points for the WWE's tag teams. But it is hard not to wonder how things would've been different had the WWE saw the talent and potential Doug had to be a singles competitor as oppose to wasting him within a placeholder tag team. Honestly, I think that seeing Doug's success in the lower level I think that Doug could have be a stable mid card singles talent to add more depth to the WWE. I've seen a little bit of Doug's work at the time and he had potential but for some reason management didn't see it in him or didn't get the point of developmental at the time. Now some might point to Doug's short singles run following the split the Basham's had due to the draft, but I do think at that point it was a little "Too Little Too Late" for anything to really happen.
