View Full Version : Eugene/Kane, the semantics of the "r" word.

Just a bit of a random thought.

Back when Kane was wrestling with his mask and was still somewhat of a supenatural monster, he was often referred to by Lawler (and the occasional wrestler) as the "Big Red Retard."

It's just interesting that, with the profuse use of "retard" on Kane, that they seem to be deliberately dodging the use on someone who would better fit the word. That's not to say I think they should, I just think it's interesting (If mildly).

What do you think? Legit taste, or just trying to keep the liberals off their asses?

I don't think people would be too happy if you slung the word "retard" at a man with slurred speech, messy hair, a funny walk, and a below average intelligence. Besides, they probably avoid using the word to make sure a Eugene heel turn can happen one day.

Yeah, but we're not talking about Triple H here.

I think that it also has something to do with the whole FCC crackdown after the Janet Jackson nipple slip. They had to tone down Cena's promos because of it, and I think that this is done for a similar reason.

However, I also think that Kane's persona has changed a lot since he lost his mask. He has become more 'human' since he took it off, and deserves more respect as a human being, as opposed to having the mask on and looking like a supernatural character. You could call a supernatural monster a retard and get away with it more than saying it to a recognizable person's face. This is more likely a bigger reason than the one that I mentioned above.

Let me just bring up an interesting point.
Kane vs Eugene on Raw 2 weeks ago.

With the unmasking angle last year, Kane's characteristics seemed to change. When wearing the mask, Kane was occasionally referred to as "The Big Red Retard", most likely due to him having poor communication skills, at the time (this was at a time when Rock, Austin, and HHH ruled the mic, while Kane was just a character who was UT's brother, was burned as a child, and was a psychopath). However, with the unmasking, the dimensions of Kane's character changed, for the better (in my opinion). Notice that since the unmasking, Kane has yet to be called “The Big Red Retard”. Why? Kane's character has become more CLEVER. Being 'retarded', means being easily manipulated, and Kane's weaknesses in being manipulated were clearly evident in his angles with Chyna and then Xpac. I think it was at that time that "The Big Red Retard" moniker came about.

Anyways, let me get to the point I was trying to make about Kane vs Eugene 2 weeks ago.
Funny how only a year ago, Kane was the character that fans sympathized with because he was a ‘freak’, and thus different. The little thing I found my most interesting was when Kane hugged Eugene, and had a smile on his face. That shows that within a year, Kane isn't the easily manipulated person, but rather the manipulator.

Yea that was one thing that I noticed. They always used the word Retard with Kane but they havnt used it once with Eugene. It might be because he is a face but also the heels havnt said it at any point against him. Coach would of been the perfect person to use it. But I guess that it might hurt some moms feelings out there and they might complain. Oh well. At least the angle is going good.

With the WWE seemingly backing the Nazi salute in Germany, with their history of poor taste angles, I'm shocked that a heel hasn't called him a retard for cheap heat.

I'm not saying they should, BTW. Just that I'm surprised.

I really dislike the word retard. ditto for spastic.

I think mentally handicapped is a much more appropriate term.
In terms of someone offending someone else with the word retard, I personalyl think it is awful
