Help, my computer crashed...

ok, it boots and just as XP gets to the welcome/blue it gives me the blue of death and reboots.

tried to repair it failed said "setup error"

Tried all forms of safe mode, same issue, it reboots.

finally loaded a 2nd version of windows and have been pulling files off so I can wipe out a reload.

There are a few things I haven't been able to get, and didn't know if there was a way.

I got my outlook.pst so I have my old e-mails, but where I can't get in the old version of outlook I can't export my contracts or password.

Also, can't get in the old ver of IE so can't get my favorites.


Any suggestions?

I might have an old version of those on my laptop, but would like to get the more recent if possible.

At worst, you can take your hard drive out of your actual computer and hook it up to someone else's (a friend's, or an alternate comp) as a secondary hard drive, or a slave. Then take whatever shit you want off of it, and either store it somewhere safe or on that comp. CDs and shit work, but it may take a while.

I dunno what caused it. Usually bluescreens for me come with driver problems or hardware problems. Have you put in any new hardware recently? Anything new? Anything fry up in there? Not really an expert here, but I've dealt with a few similar problems with my own comp when it was new.

If your running XP your favorites are located at C:\Documents and Settings\name of user\Favorites and they should all be in there.

That wouldn't work, you secondary drive can't have a partion to load up the OS.

It sounds like something is wrong with your system files. If you still have the XP CD then try putting it in your drive and restarting your computer. Depending on what type of computer you have, press the "Delete", "F1", "F2", "F3", or "F5" buttons constantly until it loads up your BIOs. Just keep pressing right after it loads.

After you've done that, search through them until you find an option for "First Boot Device" (it will read similar to that). Change it to your CD Drive or whatever drive you put the XP CD in. Save and exit out.

It should continue to load from here and you will get a black screen that almost looks as though you're in DOS. It will ask you if you want to do a repair, say "NO" (forget which button, I believe ESC but it will say on the bottom) and let it continue. It will then again ask you if you want to repair. This is where you want to say "YES". Press "R" and let it go.

You can then enter BIOs again and switch it back if you would like or just take the CD out of the drive. (I would switch it back personally, probably to Hard Drive but that is just because I keep CDs in the drive all time and it could cause them to load when I started. Pretty stupid.)

If that doesn't work come back here and tell me. If you can, write down the error if you're still getting it. Good luck.

I've done exactly that before. Is this a new feature on XP, or are you just uninformed?

(If it wasn't possible, I wouldn't have been able to retrieve some stuff on my other hard drive to this one...)

ok, here's the scoop...

got just about everything I "really need" outlook.pst, my work files, quickbooks, even got favs and cookies (got all this by loading a 2nd ver of XP) the new version if I'm not in safe mode crashed a lot... but was able to get stuff burned to CD.

So, going to wipe this thing out and start from scratch... also found my e-mail accounts for outlook exported on my laptop, so I can pull them from there...

I guess this might be a good thing, have had a wireless network sitting in the box for 2 months so might as well kill 2 birds w/ 1 stone....

Stuff like my firewall (zone labs) and anti-virus (Nortons) I can just download again, since I'm paid/registered w/ them and only got the download ver and never made a CD... hmm... probably should go pick up some CD/RW and setup a regular backup schedule while I think of it...

What'd you expect from a newbie... I have no rep power... but it's the thought that counts... like getting a fruit cake for the holiday that you let sit on a shelf till you either re-gift it the next season or throw it out after 10 years.

Happened to me after I installed the patch to prevent against Sasser... why a patch would frig up my system I don't know, but it makes sense since Sasser ties in with the logon file and that's what the patch would've affected. No one else reported problems with it though.

Anyway, I managed to get back on by doing F8 and going to Last Known Good Configuration.

This wouldn't help since you've worked around your problem, but I felt like mentioning it anyway.

Yeah, tried last known and didn't work... and I think I also had Sasser on there, or got it when I reloaded before I got nortons and the firewall going... found a few viruses... couldn't access updates, couldn't access major anti-virus sites (symantec, McAfree)... after I got rid of them, had to reinstall windows to fix the files that were screwed...

but, all works... plus the wireless network is going, so I can pull stuff from my laptop, etc... maybe even get my ps2 connection going... ofcourse this might mean I'd have to use my ps2...

I had a similar error like this at work. It was the hard drive. Lost all my data (luckily it was only like 2 worthless files). I had to pop in a new drive and do a fresh install.
