View Full Version : Most disappointing game(s)? Favorite game(s)?

Mine mostly revolve around MMORPGs or other PC games because that's what I'm mostly into.
My favorite games:
Asheron's Call: Played this for years.. only quit recently due to my account being hacked.
Everquest: Yeah.. a lot of people like it, and a lot of people hate it. I used to hate it, but recently a couple friends gave me an account, and I've been having a blast.
Age of Empires and Rise of Rome expansion: These were some of the first online games I really got into. Played them for a long time before discovering others.
Rainbow Six: Yep.. the original PC one. This was the first online game I ever played, and it was a blast.
Most disappointing for me would have to be:
Star Wars Galaxies: Really hyped game, had a huge fan base.. for a LONG time, people waited for this.. It realesed, and I completely hated it.. Nothing but a grind fest, in my opinion. :'(
Asheron's Call 2: Waited for this one for years.. had been playing the original Asheron's Call for a long time, and everyone was looking forward to AC2. When it released too early, it bombed. Within a year, servers were merging due to not many people playing, and by the time they fixed the game nobody wanted to try it.

**Favorites**
Metal Gear Solid: Still the definitive stealth-action game in my book. MGS 1 was one of the three PS-1 games you absolutely had to have (aside from FF7 and Gran Turismo) Great story, awesome characters, (unlike SoL) moderately small cut-scenes (except the last 2 or 3), and most importantly, it was just a fun game to play.
Aliens versus Predator 2: I've always been a die-hard fan of the Alien and Predator movies, and this was probably the best game to come out of that franchise. It was fast-paced, incredibly scary (if you were the Marine), and a hell of a lot of fun. I still play it every now and then when I feel like scaring the shit out of myself.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2: Gotta give some love to the old school. I'll probably buy just about any game with Sonic in it, but I gotta say this one was probably the best out of the whole series.
Mechwarrior 3: The last good Mechwarrior game before Microsoft bought out the franchise and turned into all arcade-style Gundam crap. For those of you who don't feel like shelling out $200 for Steel Battalion, I highly suggest you go to your local games store and pick this one up. Last I saw, Software Etc. had it going for $5.00
Crono Trigger: I'll be honest with you; I normally cannot stand playing RPG's. So if one makes it onto my top 5 favorite games, it's gotta be pretty fucking good.
**Most Disappointing**
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: I absolutely loved GTA-3, and why not? It was hugely innovative, and revolutionized the gaming industry. So naturally, I was excited for the sequel. But honestly, it was basically playing the same game with an 80's motif and slightly worse graphics, and that wore off pretty quick. Maybe it's unfair to stack it up against GTA-3, since that one was a milestone, but it still felt like a let-down.
Halo: I still fail to see what people love so much about this game. Yes, it's a fairly entertaining FPS, but so are a billion other FPS's. What's this one got to offer? Really shiny surfaces, shotguns that can kill you with two shots from halfway across the room, pistols that kill you faster than machine guns, and cartoony enemies that look like rejects from Buzz Lightyear. Oh, and vehicles which are really awkward to steer and have no traction. I could go on, but I don't really care to.
Star Wars Galaxies: Like I said, I'm not big on RPG's, especially not MMORPG's, but if anything would get me to play one, it'd be the chance to be a Stormtrooper or Bounty Hunter, or take off in an X-Wing and blast some TIE Fighters. The end result was underwhelming. All the levels looked like crap since I had to turn the graphics all the way down so it wouldn't kill my computer. And you never really feel like you're accomplishing anything besides the standard MMORPG routine: spend hours screwing around with your character until he becomes Death Incarnate, then get sick of the game and buy something else. When I think of my ideal Star Wars game, it doesn't include paying a monthly fee to wander around beating up Womp Rats or punching a nest until it explodes.
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty: As much as I loved the beginning of SoL, I hated Raiden and spent half of the second game just wishing they'd get on with the damn game instead of so many cut scenes. Very fun game when they'd let you play it, but the plot just got incredibly convoluted, the new characters were mostly annoying, and FOR THE LOVE OF GOD MAKE THE CUT-SCENES STOP! Still, Snake Eater looks like it'll more than make up for SoL's sins.
Team Fortress/Counter-Strike/Day of Defeat/etc: Basically, all the online games with the HL engine. Not so much the games themselves, which are on the whole pretty fun, but the people who play them are some of the most vile and mean-spirited people on the internet. Seriously, if they're not screaming into their microphones that you're a f</>aggot, they're hacking into the game to cheat, or (more commonly) accusing you of doing that because you killed them once. These kinds of dickheads are all over the online community, but they're so common in these games that I just gave up on playing the games and almost online gaming as a whole.

Favorites:
The Suffering - I love prison movies and horror movies so this game was right up my ally. I liked how you had Creative control over the character and that there were three different endings and that the ending you get is based on the decisions you make within the game.
Manhunt - Not really horror, but pretty creepy at times. It was like that took the Warriors, Escape from New York, and The Running Man and put them all together, thus making Manhunt.
The Curse of Monkey Island and Escape from Monkey Island - Guybrush Threepwood is right up there with Mario, Link and Sonic IMHO.
Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto : Vice City - I love Mafia flicks so I loved these games.
WWE Smackdown: Here Comes The Pain - Loved all the legends.
Mot disappointing: Every game I have gotten on Gamecube so far. Especially the new-school Mario and Zelda games. I guess I am excepting them to be as great as the old games from my youth but they fail miserably.

Was very dissapointed in Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando. I would start off a level, and use ammo, and if I died, I would start off at the beginning of the same level, but with the amount of ammo that I died with before. So I had to conserve my ammo, which wasn't possible, because I had to kill people in order for a door to open etc. So when I couldn't kill the people that I needed to kill, I would start back at the beginning of the level with 0 ammo, and I couldn't do anything. :n:
My favorite games:
05. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (XBOX) - I dislike Star Wars very much. I don't like any of the movies, and I find the franchise to be a complete waste. I believed the Star Wars theme and world had potential, but it wasn't being exploited thanks to the limited mind of George Lucas. However, BioWare's deep, open-ended RPG is so damn good, it made me buy and immensely enjoy something with the Star Wars name on it. That's achievement enough, but the Canadian developer was able to make a game with all its elements so cohesively melt together, that it made better use of a license than even its movie originals have failed to take advantage of. I true gem.
04. Final Fantasy X (PS2) - The best RPG I've ever played. No Chrono Trigger, no Dragon Warrior, no Final Fantasy VI... X is where it's at. With an open-ended, rewarding leveling up system in the form of the "sphere grid," a story tighter than its predecessors carried by realistically-developed characters, a fun battle system that encourages the use of all your party members in every battle, and a truckload of secrets and side quests to keep anyone hooked for endless weeks, this is one game that gets everything right. As of now, I've clocked over 220 hours in the game, and I haven't leveled up everyone to its limit, or gotten through all the side events. A massive quest worth every penny, which explains why it's the first FF game with a true sequel.
03. Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (GCN) - While the game had some problems the original version did not have, it did add improved cut scenes to what were already the industry's best. A remake of one of the best games ever made, its own little quirks and everything from the original make it worthy of the third spot.
02. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (PS2) - A sequel that improved on the gameplay and interaction of the original, MGS2 introduced more ways to sneak up and take out enemy guards, a more unpredictable and better-trained A.I., excellent boss battles, and a truckload of Easter eggs that would take several play throughs to see them all. The addition of dog tag collecting and a password to submit your score on KCEJ's website added a competitive edge to the series. The story was less widely accepted, as it took a different approach from the original, but I still had a lot of fun with it.
01. Metal Gear Solid (PS) - The best there is. I didn't know what games were truly capable of until I played MGS on my PlayStation. No other game before or after it has ever grabbed me by the throat and immersed me in such a deep, engaging way. Saying that I am addicted to it would be an understatement. I've played the game nearly every year since its '98 release, and that's not counting Twin Snakes. With the true evolution of stealth gaming, the successful marriage of the magic of movies and video games, accessible yet deep gameplay, a mostly optional sense of humor, an enviable cast of characters, and a replay value so high and long-lasting that would make anyone quit (or forget) smoking, make Metal Gear Solid the best game ever, in my book. Hideo Kojima is a fucking genius.
My most disappointing games (Not in order):
Street Fighter: The Movie (PS) - This is a game based on a crappy movie based on a flawless game. I was too young to care about the ridiculous concept Capcom had cooked up, so I was able to truly enjoy the arcade version. Many people say that it's the bad apple of the SF series, but I really liked it. However, when my dad returned from the US with my highly anticipated home version of the game, my heart was nearly coming out of my mouth. I rushed to my PlayStation, put the disc in, watched the cool opening scenes from the bad movie, picked Guile, and proceeded to stare in terror as the cool life-like sprites of the original were turned into horrible magazine cut-outs, the backgrounds were drastically downgraded, and the action suffered from incredible slowdown, crappy animation and slow-paced fighting. A HUGE disappointment.
Halo (XBOX) - Now... this isn't Bungie's or Microsoft's fault. Bungie made a solid PC FPS with a cool sci-fi theme to it that was later bought my Microsoft and taken to their 'BOX. This game would've become a solid launch title that was a good reason to get the system... but fanboys, reviewers and industry analysts inexplicably pissed their pants and labelled Halo as the end-all-be-all of gaming. I can't believe for the life of me that so many people were so impressed with Halo. While the game is a solid FPS thanks to its then-excellent graphics, solid A.I. and spot-on controls, it offered nothing that an older FPS didn't deliver in a much better package, that is... one lacking the repetitive level design, limited weaponry and childish character and alien design of Bungie's FPS. Cooperative play can be addictive indeed, but multiplayer alone, which wasn't that innovative of a concept even at the time, isn't enough to congratulate and award the game 10/10s and praise reminiscent of religion. My only question is, what were people smoking?
Super Mario Sunshine (GCN) - This is probably the best example of why I recovered from Nintendo's mind control that began at early childhood. Every Mario game, from Super Mario Bros. to Super Mario 64 has been an evolution and revolution of the platform genre. The series, up until that point, guaranteed the best of quality, unequal to any other of the same genre... but then the sun came out. With Super Mario Sunshine, developers tried to capture the magic of Super Mario 64, and while they did improve on the graphics and mobility of the character, Nintendo decided the concept of good and varied level design was just overrated, so Nintendo's janitor, descendant of Jumpman, took over said department... and as a result, we were left with a Mario that couldn't truly exploit his moves in a fun way for such a boring environment. An average platformer at best, a slap in the face to Mario fans at worst. Even Shigeru Miyamoto expressed his disappointment with the game... so hopefully Mario 128, if it ever comes out, will grace us once again with the Mario quality that's been missing since 1996.
Enter the Matrix (Multi) - Ugh! Ouch! Ay! Ow!... playing Atari's awful game was like Mike Tyson kicking my ass in a bar after he saw me groping his girl... now, I haven't been punched in the face by Mike, but I don't think it hurts as bad as playing Enter the Matrix. Excessively repetitive level design to the point of "Did anyone test this game?," to law-defying vehicle physics and incredibly bland graphics, this title was a low blow to us Matrix fans. Not only because it was a crappy game, but because we were all forced to buy it just so we could own the exclusive footage. That's like not eating in ten days, and then an Atari rep gives you a nice cheeseburger, but before you can eat it he takes a shit on it. Luckily, WB is forcing ATARI to get its act together by controlling royalties if ATARI games based on WB franchises don't get a score higher than an average 70% in game review sites. WB, I love you and would have your children if I had a vagina.
The reason old school games aren't included is because they didn't reach the top of greatness or level of disappointment of the above titles.

Favourites:
Baldur's Gate 2 & The Throne Of Bhaal
I've had both the original and the X-Pack since the day they came out, and I still haven't gotten bored of it. Add a thriving mod community which includes a former developer and some very good writers, and its very difficult to put down.
Planescape Torment
Its what every RPG should strive to be, as it has absolutly everything. The dialogue and storyline is one of the best I have ever seen in a computer game, and its very open ended. The way the class system was used this time was brilliant too. Rather than starting off in a class, you learn it through the game. Oh, and Morte reminds me so much of Murray from Monkey Island.
Final Fantasy 9
I loved this game so much. The characters are completly original, every town completly different from the next, the storyline is great, it has an fantastic villain, and some of the characters are very funny.
Dissappointments
Final Fantasy X
Take a FF game - Remove any signs of a good story, change all the characters to become very annoying and bland, make the game completly linear and add a terrible minigame called Blitzball, and you have FFX. I don't understand why this is considered the best FF game by some. Im hoping Square don't use the same formula for FFXII.
Metal Gear Solid : The Twin Snakes
I thought this was going to be a very good update of an old game. Not the case apparently. They brought the voice actors back to re-record their old lines and some new ones, except it didn't sound nearly as good as before. The developers hyped the fact that there was going to be tons and tons of extras, but most of them were in the original. Don't even let me get started on what happened to the cut scenes.
Deus Ex 2
Well, I really did like this game. But I loved the original more. They took so much of what made the original so good, out of the sequel. Granted, there was always at least 2 ways to get past a situation, and the plot was very good, but I just think it could have been so much more. Universal ammo thing sucked too. It meant that if you ran out of ammo for one gun, you've run out of ammo for all of them.

I don't get this whole "if it has cartoony graphics it must be kiddie" type logic that people have.
If you are willing to write off an entire game because you feel you are too mature for it, just by looking at the graphics, then it sucks to be you. Viewtiful Joe has cutsey graphics, and I guarantee you, it ain't no kiddie game.
I should add Viewtiful Joe to my list actually. One of the best games I have played in a long time.

Favorite Games...
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
This is my favorite game right now. I love playing it online (Goats Bar & Grill), so much fun headbanging and voice chatting and being medic and reviving  Only thing bad is that I have a mic problem and teamspeak is screwing up, and my lag is getting a bit high :nono:
Smackdown: HCTP. Since I love wrestling games, this has to go here. I only like 4 games for PS2, and 3 of them are wrestling  and this is the best one.
Perfect Dark. This was one of my fav's back in the N64 days.
Road Rash 64. This as well. This can be the funniest game ever if you're playing it on multiplayer with about 3 friends. I remember I was at my cousin Mike's house in FL, and him, my brother and I were playing it, and we all got those really super duper fast bikes, I forget the name but they went up to like 500 MPH, and it was just a drag racing level, and there was a computer named Gabriel, and at the end of each race there would be the places in order of who won....so the order would go something like this: 1 2 3 GABRIEL! Or...3 2 1 GABRIEL! HAHAHA!  :naughty:
Dissapointing...
GTA: Vice City. Horrible Controls. And the game itself is frusterating :foc:
Grand Turismo...

I like the new Zelda and Mario games.. I was just figuring that was his reason for not liking them, since they do have the same look kinda. So, I just gave that as a possible solution..
Someone said FFX? Wow. Drugs are bad, k?
Yeah, they make me have opinions. Oh Lord, what is I gonna do?

Over here in England, stores have broken the release date so much, that the game is in the all formats sale charts before the official release even hit. Oh, and the publishers plan of putting a "premium" price on it (i.e. Charge £5 more for it because its just that damn good ) has been completly ruined, as stores also just put it at £40 rather than the £45 price they wanted.
I love it when marketting schemes like this get fucked over.

I'm going to go console-by-console, because my list would just be endless if I didn't limit myself to one each.
FAVORITES
NES - Tecmo Super Bowl
In my opinion, this is still the finest football game ever produced. It's easily accessible, has incredible replay value, and is one of the first sports games I can remember to use a Players' Association license. There was nothing better than racking up 250 yards as Barry Sanders or blasting a 60-yard field goal as Morten Andersen. I still play this constantly.
Honorable Mention: Mega Man 2, Super Mario Brothers 3, Kung Fu, Gold Medal Challenge '92, and Dusty Diamond's All-Star Softball
Genesis - General Chaos
I don't know what it is about cartoony armies of four members each torching, gunning, and exploding the hell out of each other that is just so damned fun. A military strategy game years ahead of its time, Chaos was brilliant in its simplicity. Pick a spot on the map, choose your team, and raise hell. Just like Tecmo, I play it still to this day.
Honorable Mention: Skitchin', Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Jeopardy, Road Rash, and Toejam & Earl
Super NES - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Still considered by many to be the best of the Zelda series, I find it hard to argue. The story is so deep, and you can spend days trying to find everything. The game was a great transition graphically between the cartoony NES games and the more realistic N64 titles. There is just so much to love about this game that I'm finding it hard to describe.
Honorable Mention: NBA Live '96, Donkey Kong Country, WWF Raw, Earthbound, and Super Mario All-Stars
More later. I gotsta go see "Fahrenheit 9/11."

Good Stuff
Capcom Vs Snk 2: Mark of the Millenium 2001 - One of my top games ever, I still play it now.
Tekken 3 - Hammered this game to death until the day I got Tekken Tag Tournament.
Final Fantasy 8 - The first RPG I ever played, and I recently played through again for the definitive save. Many, many hours wasted on this game.
Metal Gear Solid 2 - This was the game that got me into the games completely. I love the story and the gameplay - far superior to almost all games out on consoles atm and probably will be for a long time.
GTA 3 and Vice - What can I say that hasn't already been said. Awesome.
WWF - No Mercy - No wrestling Game has really beaten how enjoyable this game is. Maybe its due to the perfect wrestling system or the customisable roster of characters. Absorbed too many hours of my life.
Pokemon - As sad as people may believe these games to be they hold a hell of a lot of strategy and gameplay. Legendary for a reason.
Bad Stuff
Smackdown 3 - A minor upgrade to Smackdown 2 with elements that made Smackdown 2 great taken out.
True Crime - Wow this game was shitola. I get penalised for killing people. No thanks, I'll stick to Vice.
Driv3r - Crap on a stick.
Enter the Matrix - This game could have been so much more, I hired it and completed it with both characters in a day. Fun but not fun enough.
