The Dudley Boyz are Formed
Year: 1996

Here's one for all of you ECW fans out there. If you were a fan of ECW back in the mid 90's you would know that the Dudley Boyz didn't just consist of Bubba Ray and Devon (ECW spelling) Dudley. In fact they were not the first Dudley's to appear in wrestling at all. You see, the Dudley's were a huge stable in ECW, commonly referred to as the "Dudley Family." You can see a picture of some of the family members in the pic above.
From left to right in the back row you have the two Dudleys everyone knows today and Big Dick Dudley. In the bottom row, from left to right, you have Dances with Dudley, Sign Guy Dudley and Chubby Dudley. Some other Dudley members included: Dudley Dudley, Snot Dudley and of course, Spike Dudley. Basically the premise of the "Dudley Family" was that the Father of the Dudley Boys had intercourse with many different women, so each Dudley had a different mother, excpet for Dudley Dudley, whose mother was the real "Momma Dudley"
Ok, that's just a brief history of the Dudley Family, but I want to talk about the formation of one of the greatest tag teams of all-time. When Devon made his first appearence in ECW, he was against the "Dudley Family" The Dudley's were babyfaces and Devon was a heel. Devon would always insult the audience at every chance and he was by far the most aggresive Dudley. Bubba Ray and Devon had a match at November to Remember 96, in which Bubba Ray would go on to defeat Devon. The match was pretty good and basic ECW kind of match. Bubba beat Devon with the "Bubba Cutter" and I think that was the first time a Dudley used a version of the "3D." Axl Rotten would come in after the match was over and him and Devon would destroy the Dudley members, including Bubba and Spike, until Big Dick made the save.
So it seemed as if Bubba Ray and Devon Dudley would be at each other's throats forever, but that would all change on one night. Now, I'm not sure of the exact date, but on ECW TV, Devon Dudley took on the Sandman. The match was again your basic ECW MATCH with weapons used and fighting in the crowd taking place. Sandman would go on to win the match with a rollup, but Joel Gertner, who had been siding with Devon, would come in and announce Devon as the winner. He would do this often when Devon would lose a match, he even did it at November to Remember 96, which I just talked about.
Okay, let's get to the good stuff. So, Sandman would nail Gertner in the back of the head with his cane. Then Devon would get up and attack Sandman from behind. Devon nails Sandman a few times in the head with a weapon. (I think it was an umbrella) Sandman drops to the canvas and this brings Spike and Bubba Ray Dudley, who was carrying a chair, out to the ring. Bubba Ray looks like he is going to nail Devon with a chair, BUT INSTEAD NAILS SANDMAN IN THE HEAD AS HE GETS UP.
Spike can't believe it and is gesturing to Bubba Ray like, "What the hell are you doing." Bubba Ray and Devon look at each other and smile. Then Spike realizes what's going on and starts attacking Bubba and Devon. Spike was kicking ass until Devon caught him with a closeline. Then THE "Dudley Boyz" hit the first ever "3D" on Spike. The Dudley Boyz beat on the Sandman some more and then the Gangsters hit the ring. They also get destroyed by the Dudley Boyz and Bubba and Devon slap high five.
THOUGHTS: Great segment here as the two Dudley Boyz would be much better and much cooler as a heel tag team. Eventually, Big Dick and Sign Guy Dudley would later join Devon and Bubba as heels and JOEL Gertner would be the manager of the Dudley's. Spike would be the only Dudley not to turn heel and the other Dudley members just sort of faded away. The "Dudley Boyz" would go on to become the greatest tag teams of all-time and would win the titles on a number of occassions. But, if you have only seen the Dudley Boyz as heels in the WWE, then you haven't seen anything because Bubba and Devon were kick ass heels in ECW and will always be remembered for insulting the crowd and getting them all riled up. Good times. Okay until next time, RKO AND OUT. :)
