View Full Version : Two Smackdown! Superstars Upset; Considering Leaving?
Joe Kerr
07-03-2004, 12:18 AM
According to backstage sources Billy Gunn and Bob Holly are extremely upset in the Smackdown locker room right now. Both guys are upset because they feel they have "paid their dues" and deserve bigger pushes than what they are getting. Management is also upset with them because they feel that the two did not do everything they could to make Kenzo Suzuki and Mordecai look good at the Great American Bash PPV.
As we reported, Gunn recently was spotted backstage at the TNA Impact! taping and while he acted like he was only there to visit friends, many suspect he could be considering going to the promotion. TNA may look even more attractive to Gunn now that they are likely to be based out of Orlando and tape both their PPVs and Impact! there. Gunn is very keen on working in Orlando.

Bye bye to 'em. Gunn is old news, he's had plenty of good pushes and his days are over. Holly either can't work or chooses not to. I'm inclined to beleive both. Neither have ever particularly impressed me, so I'll barely notice if they leave.

On the subject of the topic, I won't miss Bob Holly because ever since his TE incident, I've wanted to kick him in the balls. Really don't know or care about Billy Gunn. He had his run with DX and when DX was done, so was Billy.

Holly had his chance and yes he has paid his dues in the past but lets just face it. There arent many fans out there that actually like the guy. I like him but thats just one out of millions. I think Billy Gunn is one of the mose underated wrestlers of all time. I think he is great but WWE just hasnt given him a chance to show what he is made of. He had a good run when New Age Outlaws came to an end and he did good when he was with Chuck but after that ended they really didnt care to put him in the spotlight that much.

Ultimo Dragon.
This is good news though. With Sparky Bobcore out of the picture injuries will be down, and with Gunn off TV as well midcard match quality will improve slightly.

Holly can put on a good match when he wants to, but that's a rarity in itself.
Ex. Hardcore Holly vs. Kurt Angle on Smackdown! was a great one-on-one match.

I'm going to join with the minority of internet fans and say "I really hope both guys stay.", as I really like both guys.
No offense to anyone here, but how many of us have run a successful wrestling promotion? We've all heard of the dreaded backstage politics, and we know the major parties involved in this kind of business. Gunn & Holly aren't those kind of people, so we have to assume their work in the ring is what has kept them their lasting jobs.
Billy is a very talented guy that can put on great matches and get the fans into it. Like it or not, the guy is more popular than Chris Benoit was before he got the title. Gunn is easily one of the greatest tag team wrestlers of all time.
Hardcore Holly is extremely unpopular with the TPWW crew, yet he is in the same category as Gunn in the marks' eyes. He gets better reactions than Rob Van Dam at times. Holly is not a brilliant tactician, but he's a much more realistic worker than most other guys, and he gets the fans into it. Wrestling is not what it was originally intended to be, and is now more entertainment than sport. Holly fits that role well if he is given a part to play.
:wavesad: if they are on they're way out, :| if they stay, :) if they are used to make the product better overall. :y:

What?
Billy Gunn talented? Are you having a laugh? I think the only good singles match he has ever had in his career was against Triple H back in 99/2000 (I really can't remember exactly) and it sure has hell wasn't Billy doing the carrying. He has failed to have watchable matches with guys who could have 3* matches with just about anyone on the roster, and honestly, they are not the ones at fault. NAO got over by Road Dogg's charisma out of the ring, and his ability to take a beating so that Billy Gunn got the hot tag. Simple tag formula. Keep in mind, that Billy Gunn lost all of his pops as soon as he ditched the Mr.Ass persona, because the marks cheered him simply because he had Ass in his name, and he had good in-ring charisma. Once he became The One or whatever else they tried, people lost interest. Also, to say he was more over than Benoit was when he got the title is ridiculous. Unless your talking about 4 or 5 years ago, by Benoit standards today. He may well go down as a great tag wrestler, but lets be honest, how many "classic" New Age Outlaws matches can you remember? What about the Smoking Gunns? Or all the million other Tag Teams he's been in. It would really be no loss what so ever for the company, especially when you have 2 guys who refuse to put young emerging talent over, designed for the BENEFIT of the company. Besides, Billy Gunn is going absolutely nowhere right now.
As for Bob Holly, better reactions than RVD? Are you deaf as well as dumb? Holly got the biggest reactions of his life facing someone who was the biggest heel in the company, and hey lets not mention the fact the fans rallied against him, purely because he was in a position on the card, he really didn't deserve to be in. As for getting the fans into his matches.... no, just no. He has had reactions for being against the biggest heel in the company, and for being in Hardcore matches. Anyone can get a reaction in a Hardcore match by hitting someone with a garbage can, it takes talent to make the match better than just "hitting people with a bunch of weapons thrown all over the place" which is pretty much what Hardcore Bob did. As for your argument about entertainment vs sport..... "entertainment" doesn't sell PPV's, the propsect of good wrestling matches does. Besides, Bob isn't even a good entertainer. He sucks in the ring, he has zero charisma, he is a bully, he, like Gunn, would be no loss to the WWE what so ever,

Holly is not a loss to anyone. He was good earlier in his career,
but his time is up - and he surely knows that. That's why he's
so damn bitter.
Billy Gunn is indeed very underrated, and is a great performer. He is
an asset to any promotion who would want to use him correctly. It
is a shame that they just dropped the whole Billy & Chuck scenario,
and didn't continue it at all.
Billy was extremely over in teams with Mike Barton,Road Dogg,Chuck
Palumbo, and pretty much whoever else he tagged with. He sells for
everyone to make them look good (apparently not in this tag match,
but hey - if you're pissed, let 'em know it), and is a solid worker.
Also, Smoking Gunns did have some A+ matches; albeit maybe not
on TV all the time (most of their matches on TV were squashes) &
Chuck and Billy had good chemistry with each other as a team. Like
it or not, they were one of the last remaining true tag teams WWE
had.

Ex. Hardcore Holly vs. Kurt Angle on Smackdown! was a great one-on-one match.
Which proves nothing, Angle can carry practically anyone.
Can't say I would miss either of them. However in fairness to Billy Gunn, I think Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit or Eddie Guerrero would struggle to make Kenzo Suzuki look good.
Can't say I would miss either of them. However in fairness to Billy Gunn, I think Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit or Eddie Guerrero would struggle to make Kenzo Suzuki look good.
I think the point was that Gunn didn't even make much of an effort. Whether the three disciples would be able to make Suzuki or not I don't know, but you could be sure that they'd give it a go. If you're a stagnant midcarder like Gunn and you're facing a hot newcomer (well... A newcomer) then you should be doing everything in your power to bump your ass off for him.
So, was Billy Gunn a great worker? Well... no. The Smoking Gunns were quite a good team (quite good is about it, mind you). Billy & Chuck weren't the worst atrocity ever and the Outlaws ring work was pretty poor, made up for heaps of charisma and some good catchphrases.
I would hardly call the guy "one of the greatest tag team wrestlers ever" when guys like *inhales* Ricky Morton, Bobby Eaton, Brian Pillman, Dynamite Kid, Rick Steiner, Tom Zenk, Robert Gibson, Shawn Michaels, Owen Hart, Rick Martel, Phil LaFon, Arn Anderson, Barry Windham, Marty Jannetty, Tully Blanchard, Doug Furnas, Terry Gordy, Mike Rotundo, Scott Steiner, Booker T and Davey Boy Smith have all walked this earth.
As for Bob? Nice dropkick and I quite enjoyed his hardcore schtick for a while in 1999, but ultimately I don't care and he can take a running jump. Oh well, he can always go back to racing cars.

both guys are past their best, billy gunn is only one id keep even though he hasnd been good since the NAO. maybe teaming him with charlie haas is the way forward for billy gunn, dont know if would be a backward step for haas tho.
bob holly hasnt been good since he had a full head of hair! zac goan's metal leg had more persona about it than this guy does. 'hey im hard core i do a drop kick' who gives a fuck take your drop kick - which is shit by the way - and get the hell off my screen and while your at it come on bob the hair, really? what are you thinking?

Oh no. I am crushed, as the departure of Billy and Bob will put a dent from which the WWE will never be able to recover from.
But they shouldn't go to Impact... TNA needs help, not something that would kill the company.

But you never answered my questions. Have you run a successful wrestling promotion? Why do you think Hardcore Holly and Billy Gunn have lasted so long? If you used the sports part to gain fans, all you'd receive are the internet smarks going to see some good wrestling. Vince McMahon has run a successful wrestling promotion because he listens to what the marks want.
The prospect of good matches doesn't draw as well as entertainment. The well built up matches do. An Undertaker vs. JBL would potentially draw more than a Chris Benoit vs. Chris Jericho match if JBL vs. The Undertaker was built up correctly. Entertainment is what the marks want sadly, and that is what they are getting.
I was referring to Hardcore Holly getting fans into matches with moves like his dropkick. I swear, I can remember many occasions where EVERYONE in the arena was on their feet after Hardcore hit a dropkick (and no, they weren't leaving). At The Great American Bash RVD got basically no entrance reaction. Hardcore Holly's beaten that, so that makes my statement "He gets bigger reactions than Rob Van Dam at times." true. Watch some Hardcore Holly matches and listen for the crowd reactions. He gets more than what people give him credit. I didn't say Hardcore compares to Chris Benoit now, I meant prior to Benoit's mega-push, if you put both guys into a ring, Hardcore would have gotten the bigger pops. BTW, how can we say Chris Benoit deserves a push more than Holly. I know that sound stupid at first, because Benoit is a MUCH better wrestler. Some of us would say it is like comparing Moses to Judas. But in all fairness, while Benoit was working for a company trying to put WWE out of business, Holly was in their working his ass off trying to help the WWE stay afloat. Then in comes Benoit and we expect him to get more than Holly? I like Benoit's skills 100x more, but in all fairness, Holly is more loyal to the WWE than most guys (same with Gunn).
Billy Gunn is talented. He is more athletic than 80% of the world, but wrestles a different style from most. If you want to see technical stuff, WWE may not be the place for you. Wrestling has changed, now the guy that gets better reactions (Billy Gunn) deserves more than the guy that can wrestle (Ultimo Dragon) in the WWE's eyes sadly. When Billy Gunn went to "The One" gimmick, he was still getting better reactions than most of the roster. The fans like him because he puts so much energy and effort into his matches.
BTW, I'm dumb for voicing my opinion that sides with a promotion that's made billions of dollars instead of a couple of internet fans who probably haven't even come close to that much money (no offense intended, but it's true).
