Yeah, I just got an electric guitar for X-Mas so I'm wondering if anyone can just give me some basic info, mainly this stuff:

-The names of all 6 strings
-How to read a guitar tab
-Other really important stuff that I need to know

Yeah, uh, help would be appreciated.

Reading Tab is easy. It is basically just six lines representing the six strings, and the # represents how far you down you put your finger. So a 0 means you play the string solo, a 1 means you play on the first fret, etc etc.

The names of all six strings from top (silver) to bottom (huge heavy bronze):

1-E
2-B
3-G
4-D
5-A
6-E

When you first start playing, keep your thumb in the middle of the back of the neck. If you learn to play like that, it'll be a lot easier in the long run. I found out the hard way.

Don't use guitar tabs unless you really have to. Learning by ear is important. I only use tabs to learn solos.

Heres a tip about when you're carrying it, and it sounds silly but when it happens then you'll know why I'm telling you. When the guitar is in the bag, make sure the zips are at the top of the bag. Where you have the little double zip on the bag it needs to be at the top. Where theres the strap screw at the bottom of the guitar, don't zip it to there. Once mine was zipped at the bottom and my guitar fell out of the bag while I was carrying it. That's just a useful piece of information.

it's handy to have tab as a resource though, learn by ear but just check in case you're wrong.

I can only play one song, and I can't even do the whole thing. And I've had a guitar for 3 years. :(

Bulls on Parade is the song, btw. :y:

I could, but I didn't even really "start" playing until recently. It's not like I've been trying to learn the song for 3 years. :o
