Shawn Michaels Collapses

Year: 1995.

One reason I loved wrestling back in the day was the fact that nothing was fake, at least in my eyes. My parents would always tell me that wrestling wasn't real and I would always fight back with "Yes it is." To some extent it is real as we see with the various injuries wrestlers to receieve. So back in 1995, wrestling was still very real to some of us, but some of us knew it wasn't. However, this moment I am about to talk about might of caught even the smartiest of smarks off guard. (Hmm,I like that word smartiest :) )

In Mid 1995, Shawn Michaels had become a babyface in the WWF. He would tag with Diesal on some occassions and he would win the I.C. Belt again at an In Your House against Jeff Jarrett. By September, Michaels and his pal Diesal had been feuding with the like of Camp Cornette: Owen Hart, British Bulldog and Yokozuna. HBK and Diesal were actually stripped of the Tag Titles after something happened at a PPV match against Bulldog and Yoko where Owen showed up and he was the one that got pinned. But, the Owen Hart/Michaels looked to be on it's way.

In October of 95, however, Shawn Michaels was legitametly attacked by a bunch of guys outside of a Syracuse Night Club in New York. This would lead to Shawn missing some time for about a month. Shawn would make a comeback at Survivor Series 1995 in a match that pitted HBK, Bulldog, Ahmed Johnson and Sid against Owen Hart, Yokozuna, Razor Ramon and Dean Douglas. Strange match here as heels and babyfaces were on the same team. Anyway, HBK, Bulldog and Johnson are your Survivors. But, Shawn does receieve some damage to his already "injured" head as he does receieve a poerbomb from Sid and a "Razor's Edge" from Ramon. This would be taken into account the next night on Raw.

So we go to Raw is War, November 20, 1995. Owen Hart vs Shawn Michales one on one. I'm pretty sure they had been playing up the fact that Shawn did suffer various injuries to the head because of the attack. Owen and Shawn have a decent match and then BOOM, Owen hits an Enzuguri right to the back of Shawn's head. Now, HBK went down from the kick, but he did get back up again. After a few seconds, however, HBK Collapses right in the middle of the ring.

Michaels had been down for a few seconds now and you could see the ref calling for help that something was wrong. Various medical personel have hit the ring and start to give medical attention to HBK. Now, here's where the sense of "is this real or not" became a question. First of all, if you take a look at the crowd through all of this, they were really worried and shocked at the same time. I know I had my hand over my mouth like people do when they feel the same. Vince McMahon was really worried at the announce booth and you could tell by his voice. Something just wasn't right here.

Vince would actually go into the ring and check on Shawn Michales. WTF, we've never seen something like this on Raw before. There was no way in hell this was fake. Now I knew my parents were liers. HBK would be worked on for another couple of minutes and the doctors would put that breathing mask on him. WTF is that called BTW? HBK would then be put in an ambulence as the fans were crying. Wow, they were actually crying.

Before I get to Aftethoughts, some one help me out here. Did the WWF Superstars also come to the ring and check on Shawn? I don't remember.

Afterthoughts: Great worked shoot here, probably the best I've ever seen. The "Outlaw/Dumpster" one is a classic as well. That's for another time though. I really thought Michaels's career was over and that he was seriously hurt. Just the reactions from Vince was enough to send a chill down my spine. I didn't know what the hell had happened, all I knew was that Michaels was finished. The WWF would say that doctors diagnosed Michaels with post-concusion syndrome and that he may never be able to wrestle again. Of course, HBK would come back and beat Owen Hart and then take the Title from Bret at Mania 12  Okay, till next time, RKO AND OUT :)

A classic moment... I've always wondered why they didn't do more of those (not too many, but since then, they've only pulled it off like once). That's why I liked Eddie's "collapse" on SD! He'd lost a bunch of blood, so it was possible that he was seriously not okay.

Yeah, if Eddie did that back in 95 it would of been great. I think it's good they don't use these "serious injury" angles a lot cause it really means something when it occurs. Unfortunately most fans know wrestling is fake now, so it doesn't work as well

Well, I guess they should start using real injuries then. :shifty:

I remember that moment. I was a little 13-year-old HBK mark when that happened, and I seriously believed that he was done. Very well-done angle, and they stretched it out well (leading to the "will-he-even-be-at-the-Rumble-oh-yeah-he-just-won-it" lead-in to Wrestlemania).

Side note, I was at the IYH where Diesel and Shawn beat Yoko/Bulldog/Owen. That was a surprisingly good PPV when you consider the roster they were working with at the time. The Bret Hart/Jean-Pierre Lafitte match is way underrated, imo.
