Well, I think that when NWA became WCW there was still another NWA kicking about. NWA Wildside or something, so JJ and his Dad bought the rights to that, if you want to get really techincal the proper NWA title is on Raw.
As far as AJ goes, it's a fucking joke he's back in the X Division, he was feuding with Jarrett for the best part of 6 months and he held the belt, so as soon as they got TV tapings they chucked him back in the X Division to make it look stronger, the X division was fine without him, put him back in the heavyweight division, where he belongs

Yeah I didn't understand why he was put back into the X division.
He is in my view the best indy wrestler around.

Don't hold me to this, because I'm slightly tired - so I might be off.
What it was was that Turner came in and took over Crockett, who
was a part of the NWA - not the entire NWA itself. They (Turner)
continued to use the NWA name, until they got tired of answering
to NWA officials, etc.. and switched to WCW.
NWA got pissed at this, so they went about and tried to regroup,
restart,etc.. as a main power. The belt WCW referred to as "the
big gold belt" was used as the international title in WCW, and th-
en later the World one. The NWA belt (seen on NWA-TNA) WAS
(and is) the NWA Title, and probably always will be.
NWA-TNA is just a division of NWA (there are tons of those) but
is ran by the higher ups in the NWA itself (Jarretts; Bill Behrens -
who is the president of the entire NWA). Behrens also owns NWA
Wildside (formerly NCW), which is an NWA division based in GA.
They are the group that turned out guys like Styles, Jason Cross,
etc.. - thus Styles becoming a bigger level player within NWA....
Confused yet?

Let me explain why A.J. Styles is the X-Division Champ.
Because when TNA got their TV "deal" with Fox Sport Net, the NWA officials...lead by President Bill Behrens...thought that A.J. Styles wasn't known by enough casual fans, so no one would tune in if they thought some nobody (albeit incredibly talented) held the World Title. Well Jerry Jarrett (president of TNA...a sub company of NWA) AND even Jeff Jarett thought that A.J. Styles was the man who basically has put NWA-TNA on the map in the first place. SO, to honor him, they gave him the X-Title so the people (who NWA officalls think are tuning in to see Jarrett apperantly) could at least stand up and take notice of this other Champion A.J. Styles.
And to further clear up any misinformation. The NWA title that Jeff Jarrett holds right now is the ORIGINAL NWA World Heavyweight Championship with it's roots being traced back to Orville Brown winning it in 1940 on acount of the fact that he was the Midwest Wrestling Association World Champion and therefore was given the Title of NWA World Heavyweight Champion. The Title you see on RAW (provided it is as everyone assumes, a continuation of the WCW Title) which it's original Champion was Ric Flair who beat then NWA Champion Sting for title. Ric Flair went on to drop the title to Tatsumi Fujinami, and of course win it back and then VACATED the title for the first time in history when he jumped over to the WWF. Well this infuriated the NWA officals and it was the straw that broke the camels back so to speak, so they say that the Title Ric Flair held was NOT the NWA Title, it was the WCW World Title. And since the conception of WCW, the NWA Title had looked like this...
http://www.wrestling-titles.com/wcw/wcw-h.jpg
However the NWA Board still had the title that looked like this...
http://www.wrestling-titles.com/nwa/world/nwa-h3b.jpg
So by all rights the NWA still had not only the physical belt, but also the legal rights to the name NWA World Heavyweight Title, and so, NWA continued to hold on to the Title that is now known (as it always has been) as the NWA World Heavyweight Title...
Hope this helps. :)
Oh and I remember my first AJ Styles match...it was back in WCW when he was a tag partner of Air Paris, he was then called Air Styles...and even while being an opener in a crappy Tag Team...he STILL kicked ass!
