Probably Ichiro or Vlad for my money. Ichiro just stacks the bases up, rarely strikes out, hits for average, to both sides, for extra bases and for power sometimes, and he hustles, ultimate lead off hitter in baseball right now i reckon.

Vlad can dig just about any ball out and hit a homer from it, he also hits for average, has great power, drives runs in, hits to both sides and has done it with terrific consistency as has Ichiro.

How bout you guys?

Yeah, there's a few. I think Vlad's hitting approach is the opposite of a pure hitter.

Yet he's incredibly successful. Textbook style doesn't work for everyone, just look at the way Gary Sheffield waves his bat back and forth.

Sheffield is another great hitter. The way he can foul off any ball in a split second is was impresses me about him, his bat speed is phenomenal

Yeah, but you didn't ask who the best hitter is, you asked who the best pure hitter is.

BUT, someone can be a pure hitter without having the type of motion taught when you're 5. Vlad is just an out and out hitter, he doesn't do it in the traditional way sure.

Also is there a reason Bonds has been left out of so many? I mean Manny Ramirez is a good hitter, but he is nowhere on the scale of Bonds IMO.

Nobody in the history of baseball is on the scale of Bonds

I'd disagree with that and say there are a few guys who were on the scale of Bonds/or could be, but no one has been more dominant than he has in the last few years

Bonds really doesn't see enough pitches to be considered the best pure hitter. He clearly has the best swing but when you get intentionally walked by yourself more than any team combined in baseball, it hurts your rep.

Vlad has an ugly looking swing but he can hit anything anywhere. Plus he swings at pretty much everything and puts it in play.

As for good looking swings, Pujols has a great swing. He looks like a coiled up snake ready to strike. Juan Gonzalez also has a great looking swing. Same with Junior Griffey

I like Edmonds swing. And Garrett Anderson.
