Why did he throw down the NWA World title?
In 1994 Jim Crockett's non-compete agreement with Ted Turner was up and he decided to start promoting with the NWA again. So Crockett went to Todd Gordon who was promoting NWA Eastern Championship Wrestling and ask him to hold a tournament for the NWA Heavyweight title. NWA President Dennis Coralluzzo thought that Crockett and Gordon were going to try to monopolize the title(much like Crockett did in the 80's) and told them they didn't have the NWA board's approval so he took control over the tournament. Gordon was upset at Corzalluzzo for his power plays so Gordon and Shane Douglas(who was decided to win the title) planned to have Douglas throw the title down after he won it and break ECW from the NWA. The plan worked and Gordon broke away from the NWA and changed his promotion's name to Extreme Championship Wrestling. The incident gave ECW huge promotion and cost NWA a lot of credibility. It also made Shane Douglas out to be a pushy wrestler that did whatever he wanted and cost him credibility as well.
