Seeing as it starts tonight, I thought that I'd start a thread. I can honestly say that this year I have no idea who will win. I hope Liverpool do well but it will be tough to come out of our group.

I'd like to believe we're going to do well this season. I'm not sure how it's going to pan out, but we have a strong defense and attack when everyone is fit. I'm just hoping the midfield put more effort in. :'(

I thought the same thing too, what were the fans chanting when he came on, I couldn't hear it properly.
His name I think then of course some absouloute tools actually booed him after his goal. After everything that Henrik did for Celtic that was a disgrace, I'd undertand if he'd rubbed the goal in their face but Jesus he just ran off after scoring. The people that booed him really had me pissed off

A night of drama in the Champions League ended with AS Roma's abandoned match against Dynamo Kiev overshadowing Bayer Leverkusen's stunning 3-0 upset of tournament favourites Real Madrid.
The Group B match between Roma and Kiev at the Olympic Stadium was called off 40 minutes after Swedish referee Anders Frisk was felled by an object thrown from the crowd as the first half ended.
Moments earlier Frisk had sent off Roma's French defender Philippe Mexes after he had kicked out at Kiev striker Maris Verpakovskis.
Frisk judged the action to be intentional and showed him a red card on the stroke of half-time with Kiev leading 1-0.
As players and officials remonstrated, Frisk was hit as he left the pitch. A gash opened in his forehead and he left the field with blood pouring from the wound. UEFA spokesman William Gaillard, speaking from Sofia where the UEFA executive committee meets on Thursday, told Reuters by telephone: "We deplore what has happened and will wait for the match delegate's report as well as the referee's own report of the incident.
"This is the first time in many years that a European match has been stopped for such an incident -- sometimes there have been electrical failures with floodlights of course, but this is something far worse."
Rome's Olympic Stadium already held unpleasant memories for the Swede.
In March 2002 he refereed Roma's Champions League match against Galatasaray, which degenerated into a brawl involving players and officials from both sides shortly after the final whistle.
Elswehere Bayer Leverkusen scored one of the biggest upsets in Champions League history crushing Real Madrid 3-0 to end a seven-match losing streak in the competition.
Manchester United, like Real Madrid, a possible title contender, also looked like capitulating to a shock defeat but pulled back from 0-2 down to draw 2-2 at Olympique Lyon.
Turkey's Fenerbache ended their seven-match losing streak in the competition with a 1-0 win over Sparta Prague and Juventus won the battle of former champions by beating Ajax 1-0 in Amsterdam. Liverpool also enjoyed a good start with a 2-0 win over last season's beaten finalists AS Monaco at Anfield while Bayern Munich won 1-0 at Maccabi Tel Aviv. Deportivo Coruna drew 0-0 with Olympiakos.
This shit has to be stopped. :nono:
On a side note, well done to Olympiakos holding Deportivo to 0-0 away from home. :y:

So why have this thread when there's already a football one?
I thought we could have a thread just for the Champions League so to not complicate things. There's a thread for the World Cup qualifiers so why not one for the Champions League.
Thats why I didn't like this thread, that theres no point on the one for world cup qualifiers as it should be in the main talk.

Yeah good
Arsenal had like 3 shots on target, so I'm not really disappointed, given that they scored 2 goals and were away in Greece without their captain. Plus we're still in a strong position to qualify and are yet to play Panathinaikos and Rosenborg at Highbury which should translate into points, and away at PSV which if I remember correctly is where Gilberto (?) scored that goal inside 20 seconds of the kickoff a few years back.
So I'm not concerned.
Yet.

10-21-2004, 03:47 AM
Yeah you cunts are in a good position. Away draws against Rosenborg and PAO are solid, you should comfortably beat Rosenborg at home. PAO might cause a few problems but you should beat them too and that'd be enough to progress to the next stage.

Yeah, everyone's going on about how Arsenal are poor in Europe but if they continue to pick up these results, win at home and draw away, then they'll be through easily. That's accounting for mistakes in both away games and poor finishing in Rosenborg.
Chelsea should be through, Porto are struggling though :o
Barca and Milan should be through easily enough, just hoping Celtic over react and sack O'Neill, when they inevitably go out. Speaking of which, i've heard their board won't give MoN anymore money so i don't know whether he'll be staying around anyway, he's realistically achieved all he can there.

The second half of the game I just watched was real good. Barca was more aggressive the whole time and Ronaldinho scored on a beautiful move in the 89th minute to win.
I really wish I could get more games. Last time I really checked Henrik Larsson was on Celtic and really good, now he is a sub on Barcalona. I also didn't know Kaka was signed by Milan, and I didn't know Seedorf came off the bench, I thought he was better? Also, when did Milan get Cafu? Last I knew he was with Roma.
Mr. Monday Morning
11-02-2004, 06:13 PM
Uhhh k lemme see if I can get those:
Larsson is still the man, he's only 32 and still scoring loads for Sweden...I haven't caught much La Liga this year but as far as I'm aware he normally starts for Barca, him being on the bench tonight was an exception to the rule.
Kaka was signed for Milan summer of '03 I believe, he played for them in the Champions League last year. I think Seedorf swaps places with Pirlo in the Milan midfield though I could be wrong.
Cafu has been at Milan 2 and a bit seasons now, he signed on a free transfer from Roma in summer 02, he was in the team when they beat Juventus in the final last year.
Tonight's full times:
CSKA Moscow 0-1 Chelsea
Porto 0-0 PSG
Arsenal 1-1 Panathinaikos
PSV 1-0 Rosenborg
Celtic 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk

How can Arsenal complain about getting bad penalty decisions against them (like against Man Utd) when they received that penalty against Panathinaikos for nothing? Lucky for them Basinas missed PAO's penalty otherwise PAO may have grabbed all three points. I still think PSV and Arsenal will progress from the group but PAO will give Arsenal a run for their money.
Olympiakos beat Monaco 1-0 before, great week for Greek football. Olympiakos next travel to Liverpool (I think) and can hopefully get a result to set themselves up for progress into the next round. PAO must win away to Rosenborg and hope Arsenal slip up away to PSV. Come on the Greek teams!

I wouldn't say for nothing.
Vieira was held and went to ground. If that happened on the halfway line the ref would have given a free kick.
But it didn't happen on the halfway line, it happened in the area. Therefore, penalty.
Unlike the Rooney affair which should have been a booking for simulation and an Arsenal free kick.
