Boston Mayor Might Ban Alcohol During World Series
College Student Was Killed After Riots Following Victory Over Yankees

BOSTON (Oct. 22) -- Boston Mayor Thomas Menino said he was considering banning alcohol sales near Fenway Park during the World Series, following rowdy celebrations of the Red Sox's league championship that turned deadly when a police officer shot a projectile into a crowd.
Menino planned to meet with bar and nightclub owners on Friday and also said he would press universities to expel students found guilty of criminal conduct in the melee.
"Since people won't accept responsibility, I, as mayor, will take it into my own hands," Menino said.
Emerson College student Victoria Snelgrove, 21, died on Thursday, hours after being hit in the eye with what was designed to be a non-lethal projectile that would douse the target with a pepper-like spray. Her father expressed outrage at the city's response to her death.
Witnesses said Snelgrove was standing outside the ballpark when a reveler threw a bottle at a mounted police officer. Another officer fired the plastic, pepper-spray filled balls into the crowd, hitting Snelgrove.
Fifteen other people, including a police officer, suffered minor injuries in Boston's Kenmore Square neighborhood near Fenway Park after thousands of baseball fans spilled onto the streets to celebrate the Red Sox triumph on Wednesday night at New York's Yankee Stadium. Small fires were set and fights broke out. Boston police reported eight arrests, mostly for disorderly conduct.
Menino said that to avoid a repeat of the rowdiness in his city, he was considering imposing the alcohol-sales ban through a state law never before used in Boston. The law lets him ban sale or distribution of alcohol "in cases of riot or great public excitement."
He said he may also ask bar and restaurant operators not to let television stations broadcast live scenes from inside their establishments during games.
Officials said the projectiles are not supposed to be aimed at people's faces, and Police Commissioner Kathleen O'Toole said she would "firmly and emphatically accept responsibilities for any errors."

But, she continued, "I also condemn in the harshest words possible the actions of the punks (Wednesday) night who turned our city's victory into an opportunity for violence and mindless destruction."
The student's father, Rick Snelgrove, said angrily that she did nothing wrong. Standing outside the family home, he held up a photograph of his smiling daughter.
"What happened to her should not happen to any American citizen going to any type of game, no matter what," he said. "She loved the Red Sox. She went in to celebrate with friends. She was a bystander. She was out of the way, but she still got shot. Awful things happen to good people. My daughter was an exceptional person."
City officials had announced there would be a heavy police presence in Kenmore Square for the history-making victory by the Red Sox, who came back from a three games to none deficit to advance to the World Series.
The city had been caught understaffed when riots broke out after the New England Patriots' Super Bowl win on Feb. 1, when one person was killed and another critically injured by a vehicle that plowed into revelers.

I go to school at Emerson and everyone is pretty torn up about it...
We had classes cancelled today (friday) and its sad.
But I don't think that my man, Wordlifemutha is making fun of the Victoria's death....... he was making fun of fuckup Mayor Menino's attempt to dry up Boston during their first World Series in 18 years. Alcohol didn't cause Victoria's death, it was the stupid cops that shot her in the eye with a bean bag bullet.
PS. Dave Wadding is a fucking DOUCHE BAG.

Couple things, every agrees the death was a tragedy, myself included.
The Mayor is talking about basiclly shutting the bars down... he wants to ban alcohal, no TV camera and not allow the bars to show the game.
Here's the problem... most of that crowd wasn't from the Bars, they were from the local colleges.
The cops are taking the blame, they tired a pepper spray gun, and it hit the girl in the head and killed her.
They did not aim for her.
The real people to blame are the college students that caused the riot in the first place.
Trashing store fronts, ripping up trees, tearing down signs, throwing trash cans at windows, flipping cars, setting cars on fire.
What really pisses me off as a person who's lived her most my life, it's most college students that aren't from here... they just take it as an excuse to go nuts.
From every report I heard... the Cops were in danger and were trying to dispearse and control the crowd (hence the pepper spray bullets).
The story that got multiple reports was... in this area (landsdowne st) the cops here on horses, trying to move/disperse the crowd and get the people who were climbing the wall and into fenway to get down.
A cop on horse told a kid to keep moving, he refused, the cop picked the kid up by his collar and tossed him on his butt. The kids got up, swore at the cop, flipped the cop off and threw something at the horse, the horse freaked, meanwhile the crowd had filled in behined the line of cops on horseback. So, they fired the pepper spray gun into the crowd.
Where I feel the mistake was... all the police should had has masks and they should have used tear gas grenades... rather then firing an object into crowd.
A lot of people are trying to make this "they shot at her, they aimed for her head". No, they didn't.
It's also interesting, that posted the pitcure of the girl in the papers today at the fathers request, hoping the kids would see what they caused and not riot and act like idiots again... yet at the same time, he's cursing the police... Seems like he blames everyone... which when you lose a child is understandable and both sides share some blame. The students for causing the situation, and the police for improper use of a crowd dispersal weapon.

When you need to disperse a crowd of rioters, nothing makes better TV than a water cannon. You have to love the Europeans.

Personally, I think the soultion is a ban on drinking on campus for the game... and unfortunaely you need the campus police and/or local cops to enforce it hard core... room inspections, campus presence etc... very few sober people would try and scale the monster from the outside, or throw trash cans through store fronts, etc...

diffrence is, a water cannon can cause serious injury, where pepper spray is used properly is a tempoaray iretant.

Yea I saw that picture in the paper today, I didn't know if I really wanted to either.
Its too bad people had to go out and riot, the Police where just trying to do their jobs. Its just a terrible accident, atleast thats what it seems like. Its too bad that a 21 year old girl is now dead for something as stupid as that.

It's near impossible to stop people drinking, I can imagine it would be worse in America what with all your Freedom stuff and whenever anything gets threatened with a ban its deemed unconstitutional.
If people don't go to bars/restaurants etc, I'd imagine they would have massive house parties. Some people just like to cause trouble, happens everywhere. The only thing the police can do is be better prepared which by the looks of the article, they weren't. It's annoying when celebrations are hijacked by morons looking for trouble.

Thats part of the problem, the majority of the crowd wasn't in the bars...
The mayor is panicking, because there were some smaller riots after the last superbowl and the police were caught compltely off gaurd which lead to a new chief. This time they were "prepared"... It really comes down to one officer possible not using the weapon properly...
did he aim at an open area and someone ran in front? Did he have aim and someone scared a horse and knocked his aim off... or maybe he didn't aim and just fired... could go either way... It was nice of the police to step up and claim full responsobility... but that really let the rioters off the hook.

^ What a pathetic attempt at heel heat.
Anyway, it always happens... you win, riots happen. Hell, sometimes, when you lose, riots happen. Some people just are plain morons, and they ruin it for everyone.
It's really a tragic shame this happened. My heart really goes out to the girl's family and friends. That's gotta suck majorly.

Really? It was on the globe front page also I think... and I thought I heard the father had the picture and requested the newspapers run it... If it wasn't by the fathers request then I question the local papers judgement... although, who knows... maybe it will help prevent idiots next time.
As bad as fenway was... you had idiots at Umass Amhearst hearling molotov coctails at cops.
